Greetings all,
Just a quick follow up to let you know what was going on server side with the fleet battles today.
Right as the first battle in MSHD-4 commenced, we got our usual notification that the CPU on the node supporting that solar system was heavily loaded. Within a couple of minutes the node had died - somewhat unusual. Over the course of the next hour or so, the node died multiple times, and an analysis of the system logs showed that it was not responding well to the high load.
At this point, we re-mapped the fleet battle to one of our new "dedicated" nodes. These were installed recently in the cluster and have around 16gb of RAM, and faster CPU than others. They also run a special 64-bit EVE server (thanks to StacklessIO we can do this now) that allows them to use this extra memory.
Once the system was remapped, it seems that the newer hardware responded quite well to the fleet battle, and did not experience the same crashing issue as the regular node did. Our server boffins will be going over the data from this next week, so expect some more juicy information about all this stuff soon.

Fly safe, Mindstar
Wait.. You guys normally get a notification when a large fleet battle is starting and then decide if you want to reinforce the node or not? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying.
Either way, at least good to see some progress seems to be being made with fleet lag, esp while its someone elses fleets atm .

LOL what a c.r.a.p. do you really think we believe in this. Anyway another system (M-OEEB) crashed aswell several times (which happened also few days ago).
Anyway props to everyone friendly or hostile who had patience to wait stucked and desynced for hours last few weeks and all that for only 14.95$ per month.
P.S. Its time for new devblog about ambulation, or correcting spelling mistakes in Zimbabwe client so we can forget that we are paying for the product thats broken for years.
Cya guys in M-O :D
Actually, I found his post to be informative and factual.
Unlike your pointless, bitter rant.
I know that a lack of lag generally means the NC losing since its the sole mechanism you've relied upon to 'win' fights for the past few years, but really... get over yourself.

Wait.. You guys normally get a notification when a large fleet battle is starting and then decide if you want to reinforce the node or not? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying.
We do have hardware monitors in place that will tell us if CPU or memory, is getting overloaded on a machine in the cluster. Tihs happens most commonly during fleet battles. Usually the course of action is to leave it as is, however there were two things different about the battle yesterday that caused us to decide to re-map it.
- Firstly, it was causing repeated node deaths, which is not good and something we very much wish to avoid. We are going to very closely analyse why this was and ensure that it gets fixed asap.
- Secondly, we have some newer hardware quite recently installed that we thought would be able to handle it a bit better. With the battle causing lots of problems running where it was on the existing hardware we decided to move it over to one of the new machines and see what happened.
I hope that makes things a little clearer.

Great stuff! Please keep the tech info coming and ignore the whiners.
From what I gather, remapping a system to another node can only be done when a solar-system is down (ie. have crashed or during DT), which is why you usually leave CPU/memory alarms alone?
PS: A VERY technical blog sometime about how this works would be greatly appreciated (at least by me). My views are my own. They do not represent the views of my corporation or alliance. |

If that is true what u said, why don't you make auto remaping, because on last login there was no lag or anything in MHSD.
Like I wouldn't mind if eve would automaticly reload me (and all the rest in system) again on new node when I am already loaded on old one. Just u could make sure that would happen before fight starts ;)
I mean you could of course have 10 systems like that ready for extra heavy systems and just throw everyone on free one and let fleet battle start :P

Thank you for the info - but I'm a little confused!
Was stacklessIO not deployed across the whole cluster then..? I must have misread the devblog, because it sounded like the whole thing had been upgraded. Its interesting that the cluster has lots of different hardware, and different versions of the eve server app running on it too - is one of the projects for the future bringing all the cluster hardware up to the same level, and the 64bit code?
As others have pointed out, its not so easy to say "hey ccp, we're going to have a huge battle in xxx-xx", and even if you plan to have a fight in a specific place, it does not always happen. As you say, normally you just leave the servers as is, so even if a large-scale fight is taking place on an older node, it will continue unless it dies or some other anomaly kicks in...?
What I'm trying to say is - if we have a good percentage of our alliance (assets and people) involved in a specific location, we'd love to know that we're going to get the best possible server performance, instead of just throwing it all in there, and hoping for the best.
If the route to getting a fleet fight on a better equipped node is to do your best to crash it, and hope it gets shunted across, you can guarantee people from all sides will try to do it, so its a bit of a can of worms you've opened there! I know this is a little pessimistic, but just being realistic, sadly.
The flipside is, the things that seem to normally cause the worst lag, such as fighter swarms, cap ships swarms, are not deliberate attempts to crash the node, but just standard gameplay now. Which major fleet fight / pos attack or defence does not involve dozens of capital ships, hundreds of fighters, titans...?
Just some hungover thoughts on the state we're in, I guess this is all on the dev team's mind already, but updates are always appreciated.

Mindstar- Just an FYI but the GM's that handle the petitions are completely unaware that your system can detect or record any large amounts of cpu load or lag. Any petition is ALWAYS answered that the server side logs show no record of lag. In the future I'll forward any lag loss petitions to you.

Sounds sweet, would be awsome if they could be automaticly assigned to nodes that crashed due to heavy fights immediatly after the regular node goes down. Or even better would be that it could like sync with the node and then just switch

On the upgrade side of things - StacklessIO was indeed deployed to the entire cluster. This a software upgrade only, and only directly affects the network layer of the server code. Throwing out the old network code, however, allows us to do some new stuff - such as compiling 64 bit EVE Servers. This allows us more flexibility on the hardware side of things, such as trying out some different servers to use for heavily loaded areas.
For the most part the cluster hardware and software is exactly the same across all nodes, so in the past there has not been any point in moving fleet fights around if they have overloaded a node. Because of this, there is no defined way of getting the system moved to better hardware. With the node deaths occurring last night, the opportunity arose to try out one of these new machines with a big fleet fight, so we took that opportunity.
Now comes the part where we look at all the data we can, and go from there. I'd say keep an eye out for another dev blog soon (tm). -- |

It needs to be a CCP official that isn't involved in any territorial alliance of course, but it could help you guys to pre-assign a big node to somewhere where a big battle is going to be.

Whilst CCP employees play the game (an idea I wholeheartedly support btw) this is a very, very bad idea. For us player, and for CCP as well.
However, any automated node reassignment system is great. Node goes down due to CPU overload and X players in system? Reassign system(s) to better hardware, and leave them there until there's more call elsewhere. Even better, assign the better hardware in anticipation of trouble spots based on 0.0 traffic flows, tempered with a touch of "what are the hotspots in the last X hours, days, weeks".
However, automation of these processes is the key. Until then, any and every manual node reinforcement will probably be regarded as 'wrapped in tinfoil'.

Note that this was a chance to test out a new server configuration rather than being a fully planned roll out. That and the statement that the majority of nodes are the same configuration.
In the past they might have wanted to reinforce a node but that's not going to work if you don't have a better server node to reinforce with.

I think the frustrating part for players is despite all the talk of new hardware, new software and the like the game has become more laggier and more unstable with fewer ships than it was 12 months ago.
While CCP is doing their best to put band-aids on the problem, if you have gang green a band-aid isn't going to really do a whole lot of good. There are underlying problems in game design which will unless addressed will not see things improve.
For the next expansion, don't give us any content. Just re-design the EVE client from scratch that will work with 500 vs 500 fleet battles without any major issues.

12 months aso there where also fewer players in eve, not I'm only just going to take a guess here that there are at lest 5% to 10% more players. With the new StacklessIO software I think it really helps, and a soon (if they do at all) switch all the eve cluster over to a 64 bit version it will only help more.
You also have to give them credit where credit is due, This isn't wow where your be luck to fit 1000 to 2000 (lucky.) on one of there clusters (as they call them servers). We have over 250k people on ONE cluster, and growing.
And the part about re-designing the eve client, well that had nothing to do with how the eve-server.. handles things, and it will take eve and now this is only a good guess over 1 to 2 MILLION man hours of programming to redesign and the eve-client. Just saying that despite what they are doing, things are getting worse. There are more people online, more accounts but they have also changed the scope of nullsec where you have to bring a motherload of crud ships to take down cyno jammers, it just makes blob warfare more of a requirement of the game, the bigger the entity you invade, the bigger the blob you need.
Players are just trying to survive in the game they design, you can't blame 400-500 players from engaging in battles because it is the system CCP has dictated on the players. Just not much innovative thinking going on in terms of game design.
From the layout of space to the cyno/reinforce system to the way drones, fighters and missiles work. All these factors contribute to the cesspool atm and really, nothing has been done design-wise to take the pressure off the hardware/software.

WoW wasn't designed for mass combat, EVE is. You can realistically only have 200 people in a system without the node keeling over or lagging stupidly, you have alliances with 5k to 10k pilots in them, and the way nullspace is designed it is forcing people to join together to form bigger alliances and coalitions. They could make design changed to significantly reduce the pressure to do so.

They don't need to re-create EVE, there are significant elements that need to be re-designed, large slabs of the code is fine and will move over or convert over fairly easily. The way it stores, processes and handles the communication needs an overhaul. A game i played a long time ago DAOC couldn't handle more than 100 or 200 a side, they went back and re-coded the parts of the game engines that was causing the servers to buckle, the following engine could support 1000 man combats or more.
You hit the nail on the head when you said EVE was designed with a very different playerbase and very different system in mind, for the old EVE the old code worked fine. They are going down a path the current code and hardware is just not going to stand up. In EVE conquering and defending nullspace is a massive chunk of the end-game, if you can't do it and have fun doing it then it will be massive crisis for the game.
We all want to have fun playing EVE.

Well i must say, last night when we cyno'd in aprox 100 ppl into m-o and the system was max'd at almost 300, i didn't encounter any lag at all. So hopefully when we cyno in more, this will still be the same, it was a change seeing alot of people in one system without encountering any lag.

Well I had a really well-worded reply, but the forums ate it.
It's good to see CCP finally addressing the issues in a specific way and communicating with the players. It looks like the new code is promising, but also appears that it works so well that it has moved the bottleneck to the hardware side, based on the Jita testing and yesterdays events. |

When I posted this thread, my one hope was that CCP would finally respond to the lag issues surrounding large fleet engagements. That they did is a credit to them. Hopefully there will now be more transparency in dealing with the lag issue so we the player base can see how it will be handled.
Will there be a report forth-coming after you analyze the node death data as to how you will be implementing changes? Hopefully in the next few weeks and not six months from now. |

To be clear I was not calling into question O Thiefs or his corps pvp experience. I was calling into question his knowledge that NC uses lag for our benefit. Last time I checked it was BoB that seems to understand and use lag to their benefit. As to Tgrads, we have not been involved in FW but we do our share of fielding pilots into NC fleets.

You must be new to the NC.
By the way, you might want to brush up on your FW game mechanics knowledge. Alliances can't participate.

In honesty, if lag wins a fight, its pretty crappy all round. So regardless of "wowz we did winnzor ur outpostz rololo" tarzanning, still the fight was won by the fact that either you or your enemy couldn't do their best, which is hardly an ideal cause for champagne and caviar at the club house.
Important note - this is entirely, entirely different to strategy / tactics / planning / traps.
Short term, the 'winner' gets some more stuff, but long term less fun as people get ****ed off and leave, less interesting pew pew, more zombie power blocs.. more 30 minute activation lag.. etc etc.
Or am I totally misreading this?

Nice that you tested a new node setup, but the obvious point needs to be brought up:
This is yet another example of BOB getting special treatment above and beyond what "normal" alliances (ie one that doesn't have half the dev team playing for). I've been in many huge battles, battles a lot larger than MSH, and not only has CCP done jack about it during the fight, they never have reimbursed ONE loss of mine that happened due to node issues.
If you are going to step in and boost a node for one particular battle, IMHO you are obligated to do so for EVERY battle. The live environment should never be used for testing, especially if it's done in a way as to give one in game entity (BOB) an advantage that you don't give everyone else.

If the node reinforcement wasn't requested by a member of the NC, you might have a point.

By this time the battle had shifted from MSHD to MO where NC was successfully preventing GBC from entering MO from Taisy. At this point the node crashed once again (# 6 or 7 I had lost count by then). Now it was at this point that CCP brought on the node repair. The funny part is that the repair now allowed BoB to enter MO in force while NC was not able to load back into game in enough time to do anything to prevent the incursion. This means that BoB was able to load AND enter MO while NC could not even load fast enough to do anything. I'll leave the more programing adept to answer why. At this point after 6 node crashes prior, I don't know who requested what.

You lost at least half your BS fleet with only killing one GBC BS before the node died and you're trying to tell us that you were winning that battle?

www.killboard.net is your friend
of course, you only lost the fights because of the node reinforcement... nothing to do with BoB being better than you... no, that can't be it... everyone knows that in lag-free fights on reinforced nodes only the devspoilters win and good FC'ing can't possibly work

lol,
Both NC & BOB got "special" treatment by the devs trying repair a server problem. This was after 6-8 node crashes suffered by both sides.
Stop trolling...
NC AND bob had the same hardware & software advantages and disadavatnages after they implentment the fix.

I find it ironic that you put 1000+ people in the same system and it crashes and everyone wants to ***** aboutą.the underlying factor that most are forgetting is that it was playable up until the system crashed. Normal fleet fights between 500 & 600 should be do able now! Sorry NC you have to drop a fewą.but hey when CCP put the restrictions on system numbers it will be done automatically for ya!!! |
