This is prolly stupid question, but seriously how do they work.
I was fighting in a 0.0 system with a support cruiser firing missiles, now to start with he was shooting defenders, and about half of them that he fired hit me!! (but why do defenders go after ships), then he swapped to FOF missiles and again some hit me and others found a pirate, so then we switched to targetted missiles and even they hit me.
After the fight was over I looked at the log and about 70% of the damage I took was from my buddy.
We were fighting in a gang about 3000-5000m apart, how are you supposed to use missiles in this situation?

Yeah, he was targetting me, because he was boosting my shield and cap.
But he fired:- Defenders, which my understanding is go after misiles not ships. FOF, which may have come after me by design as I'm in the area, but... ganged so should really know I'm friendly. Targetted, which were fired with the pirate selected.
Are you saying that if I'm targetted I'm fair game for any missiles he fires?

If you are targeted, the missiles will hit you. the defender missiles shouldn't do much damage though.
Now, if he has more than one thing targeted, like you and an enemy ship, he needs to make th enemy the active target when he fires.
The down side is if he is boosting your sheilds, then when he switches to th enemy, he'll be boosting their sheilds> ================================================

I don't know about the defenders, but other than that is sounds like "human error". It's very easy to unknowingly target things the wrong way when you have multiple targets locked. You realy have to dubbelcheck what your active target is before activating weapons and other modules.
One partikularly annoying thing is that each time you lock a new target that target becomes the active target. If you have "autotarget back" on this can realy screw things up.

IIRC FoF missiles, in real life, don't mean that they can detect the difference between enemy and allied planes, quite the opposite, they attack anything in sight. Now I can't say with this is the same for EVE FoFs, but if they do follow the real world then it would make perfect sense that those missiles hit you. As for the others... no idea.

I would like to know how F.O.F. missles are supposed to work.
Even if I have an enemy targeted I can't fire them unless they are less than 3k away. If more than 3k away I get a message that says no valid target in area(or something to that affect)
Not to mention should I have to lock on to fire these missles? shouldn't these missles be the answer to radar jamming?
Thanks for any tips! -------------------------

You have to be carefull with FOF missles just as you have to be carefull when using torpedoes in close proximity. I personally don't like FOF missles at all for the type of engagements our corp gets into. I fly a caracal and usually have 2 bays with torpedos and 3 bays with heavy/cruise missles.
Defender missles are easily confused and are not very reliable counter measure against advanced missle attacks. SBs are pretty effecitve if used right or simply taking cover by asteriods (missles/torpedos tend to collide with them).

How far were you from the pirate, Robomonkey? Were you making any effort to keep the pirate between yourself and your friend, or were you and the pirate engaged in the typical dogfight ballet?
Two things I could see causing a problem beyond the accidental targeting that others have mentioned:
Blast radius. Some of these are pretty big. If you're at 'point blank' range ideal for projectile weapons and such, you're probably within range to take damage from a missile that hits the pirate. This is even more likely since missiles are likely to blow up as soon as their target is within range of their explosion, instead of trying for a direct hit.. so if you're less than twice the range of the missiles blast away from the pirate, at certain angles you'll be caught in the blast as well.
Accidental interception. Missiles seem to go by the physics sphere of an object, rather than the actual graphical representation. If the missile bumps into the 'sphere of influence' around your ship, it will explode. Ditto for any other object, so missiles in a dogfight in an asteroid belt are worse than useless.

Missiles doesnt work, put simply.
After the last patch, Caldari gives better damage with harsh language than with missiles.
