Something which has been bothering me for a while, is the lack of variety in ship skins in eve. I used to get bored of the skins in counterstrike for a while too, until i found out that you could change them out for ones that people had made. I did a quick search just a minute ago and couldn't find anything like it for eve, and ive a good feeling it doesnt exist. I cant see how it would be hard to do tho, you just swap out the file on your pc for the new player created one? Maybe there just isnt an editor.
So basically what im asking is, is there something like this out there, and if not, what's the problem?

No. They don't want stupid shit skins on their ships, which is what will happen within minutes of allowing custom ship skins in-game.

If CCP implemented the opion to have custom skins on ships and these skins "while installed on your ship" could be seen by others, it would cause lag, which CCP is trying to limit. There is also the point that Eve has a roleplay element and these roleplayers would not like to see Hello Kitty kestrels flying past.
I personally would love to see the option of different skins for ships, not custom made ones but a variety made by the CCP artist's, maelstrom with the minmatar fleet skin, tribal skins and maybe a pirate skin. But on the other hand this would mean there is more work for the Dev's and that time is better put into other things.
Finally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Overall there isn't a problem. We have some real nice looking ships and then some crappy ones, but that's just part of the ships character and appeal. |

It would be nice to be able to personalize ships with Alliance and/or Corporation tags. However, if it would really cause that much lag it is not really worth pursuing. |

It could be implemented in a lag friendly way if you had pre made ship skins you could choose from. So only the skin ID is transfered in addition to the other ship data, which is barely more than a few bytes. The display and storage of all the skins would be client side.
Of course there's a downside to this, too. It bloat up the client with a metric ton of textures. Granted, diskspace is cheap but they would also need to be downloaded and bandwidth isn't cheap.
Also the textures need to be made and the artist department is currently very busy not only adding new stuff but also finishing what was started with Trinity.
So maybe, say, three years? |

Because the person who installed it doesn't realize it's bad. Or, they DO realize it's bad and don't care.
I'm in favor of minor levels of customization, even if only from a preexisting list of options, but nothing that completely changes the look of a ship. |

ima have to agree the current textures are debatable but reskinning completely could be clientside :P others might see your skin as bad to. what about decals (kinda like the corp / alliance decals that you can slap on your ship and if you say it lags its like say sprays in source games lag. i dont cage of they change or not im just giving a counter point.

I would like something like in-game decals to add to your ship, BUT nothing else. Why would you want to skin a ship anyway, unless you wanted to make a Hello Kitty Kestrel a reality. But it would get old after awhile. Decals would be cool, as you would be representing your corporation. But then again, the way your ship looks is really only for your enjoyment. How many of you actually look at other people's ships? |

That would kind of destroy the fun in some tech II ships. __________________ The above post has decreased your IQ by 10%. |

Couldn't these just be client-side? Yeah, not the same effect but I thought all the skins were locked away somewhere in my computer, same with the models.

nope there isn't ,the problem s that CCP not allowing to modify your client in any way,try to change the tiniest bit on your client and you wont be able to log in .

Thanks for that ghost. I'd a feeling that most people wouldnt read my post properly and just scream "lag". Yeh, so id say its something to do with the nature of the client then, maybe because you'd be able to change more than just the models.

EDIT : I probably should have checked first, but all the model files are packed in as caches or .stuff, stuff. It's all protected. Yeh, so id say its something to do with the nature of the client then, maybe because you'd be able to change more than just the models.
np well tbh , i don't think anyone but the devs knows that . from what we have been told the client is just a dumb down version ,that acts more like terminal then client . all the calculations are supposedly made server side . if that is the case i suppose they just do not want peeps to abuse it.
for example , i take the cloak skin and make it shiny ,i now have advantge over other players , or changing the ui in ways that will give advantages .

Moved to "Features & Ideas" channel to let you express all your suggestions about this at a more proper place.
However, please remember that modifying the files of the client is against the EULA.
Please continue to share your ideas.

I would be happey to just be able to set a base color and one or two trim colors. If you have ere played homeworld or mech commander you should alread know what I mean. That wouldn't take very much data to transmit and loading up a corp and alliance logo wouldn't take very much either since they would already be on the client -So says Xindi Kraid

I suppose not to keep flogging a dead horse, but id like to not be misunderstood.
What i suggested was something similar to how you change counterstrike models. Only you can see it. This means no lag. No exploits. etc.
However, if modifying the client is against the EULA, then that pretty much kills this line of thought.
So how about a competition for a player to create a new skin for a T2 ship? Variety people!

Damage decals would really add to the immersion level of the game i'l agree to that! Although would they fade over time, be directly related to how damaged you are or just be something you pay a few iskies to clean off when your in a station?
Also allowing people to modify a couple of colour values on the ship skin and including corp / alliance logos get my vote too!
I miss the days in SWG when our entire guild all had to wear the same colour coded armour of all black with a red sleeve, with added white sleeve on the other side for medics it looked great when we fielded a big team. |

SWG! they had ship paint schemes as well...pre-client-made skins... >Premade by CCP >and a pre-chosen list of colors...usually 1-3 diff colors per scheme/ship. kinda like take a basic ship....and add pinstripes....that simple paint can do allot to ease this issues i believe...
...least till ppl eventually get bord with this as well

I don't think it would be too hard to change a few things clientside and EULA, wise to allow players to make their own ship skins. It wouldn't cause lag, it would only effect computers its installed on. then maybe there can be a database on the eveo website for people to upload their skins, and every year or so the best skins are included in game as a special edition ship. __________________________________________________ |

I'd like to see corp decals on ships. So you have the corp logo somewhere on the hull.
