Hello All,
I am quite new as are my friends, 6 weeks at the eldest. We are trying to do some pvp and being shredded so I am here trying to understand more, and I have a question, I plan to jump in and try the scramble web game and I want to know if I want to know some pros and cons for Armor vs Shield tanking.
I am sure it is described somewhere, I would also appreciate a link
Thank you Nakova

If you're dedicating a lot of midslots to webs, AB/MWD, and such, then any shield tank you use will be diminished. Might be better to use armor tank since that uses low slots. ----- Ymandra's Profile |

Shield tanking
Pros:
o Instant effect; Your shields are boosted the moment the module is activated
o More effective than armour tanking
o Less skills required for maximum effect
o Shields naturally regenerate, aiding in your tanking abilities
Cons:
o Cap intensive; although it's more effective than armour tanking, it uses a lot more cap - active shield tanks are much more succeptable to being nossed/neuted or even capping themselves out.
o Modules are popular amongst mission runners so faction/officer/deadspace fittings cost a lot more than their armour counterparts
o Uses Mid slots which are also used by tackling and EW modules
Armour Tanking
Pros:
o Cap efficient - more "bang for your buck"
o Uses low slots; all mid slots available for tackle / EW / MWDs etc
o Faction et al modules are cheaper than shield counter parts
Cons:
o EANMs (armour equivalent of Invulneravility fields) require large skill point investment to approach effectiveness of shield hardners (although passive shield resistance amps have the same issue)
o No XL version of the armour repairer
o Armour is repaired at the end of the cycle; You have to wait upto 16 seconds to see your armour get repaired
o Some people add here that they use low slots, replacing damage mods, however most armour tanking ships have room for 2x damage mods and a nice armour tank
o Excellent buffer tank (Armour plates are more effective than shield extenders
Most people tend to armour tank their ships in PvP (for a number of reasons like those above also many people are gallente/amarr which naturally armour tank) and as a result, in remote repair gangs armour tanking is almost exclusively used.
That's not to say you can't shield tank in PvP; you can and you can do it effectively, however SOLOING in a shield tanking ship is difficult as you have to sacrifice at least 2 or three mid slots (tank slots) for a web, a point and a MWD (and possibly a cap booster) leaving a Raven only 2 or 3 slots to shield tank (and other shield tankers are in the same boat, I just picked that as an example).
There are a few ships that can pull it off though:
Raven (it CAN do it, but you need good mods and skills and rely on your DPS as much of your tank for survival)
Drake has native shield resitance bonus which allows you to "sacrifice" an invulnerability field or two.
Rokh has the same bonus (plus it can fire blasters which is just awesome).
Many nano-hacs - Ishtar, Cerberus, Vagabond etc use a shield tank as a passive buffer as much as they do their speed. --

Shields arnt as good as armor when it comes to buffer tank, for solo/small gangs you need your mid slots for other stuff than shield tanking.
for bigger blobs, shields have the benefit of room for dmg mods, whiele armor tankers have the benefit of more survivablity in the effect of slightly higher resistances and slightly better buffertanking abilities (which are tied together but 2 differnt things).
gallente and amarr are in general considered the better pvp races and both are armor tankers, so... yeah id guess you could say pvp wise your better off armor tanking. (this depends on what your flying though, but in most cases your probably better off flying caldari for Ewar and amarr for anything else (seems to be the FOTM race atm))

Don't underestimate speed tanking. A small ship orbiting a larger target ship at reasonable speed will be hard to hit and often a far better option than shield or armor tanking.
Then there's EWAR, getting your opponent damped and jammed (and tracked - for an enemy that's wielding turrets) is also a valid means of survival. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.
