I'm hurting for a slot at the moment as I am sure a lot of people are. I know that there are some people like me who are looking to make a few bpcs every week for personal production use or to sell that simply don't have 50+ hours to check every station in EvE for an open lab slot that may not exists. I propose that the way we rent the slots should change to the following...
1. Temporary slots - These are slots that can be rented for a twelve hour period only. After 12 hours they release themselves regardless of any work in progress. Temporary slots should be cheap but obviously more than 1000 isk per rental. Temporary slots should not be able to be re-rented by the same person. I don't know if EvE is capable of tracking rentals by user at a particular station, but I think a cool down period could be imposed more easily say for 5 hour duration.
2. Long term slots - These would be rented for a period of 2 weeks, 1 month, 1 and 1/2 months, etc.... Long term slots would carry a high price tag. 1-2 mil for the 2 weeks, 4-5 mil for the next week, etc.... These slots can have their rents extended but for another fee. These are almost the same slots we have now, just a few differences in how you initially rent them.
I think this is a good idea and a few others I shared this plan with think so too. The point is that we have 3 types of users: Casual, Intensive, and Squatters. Casual users, like me, are forced into a 3 day rental that is cheap and easy to renew. We may not need the slot but we will churn out a couple of bpcs in order to keep it just because we know that itĘs easy and lab slots are a rare commodity. Intensive are the people that are selling ship bpcs or other high level bpcs which generate a good deal of revenue so they run their bps for a month or two knowing that the returns are incredible given the investment. Then there are the squatters. People who suck up lab slots in order to sell them for a profit.
As far as it goes if I am willing to pay 4 mil for a slot to a squatter why shouldn't I be able to pay that much to have a slot for a month guaranteed. If we had slots that were permanently temporary there would be no need for squatters.
It may be too late for this idea, and I am not sure if itĘs possible to do although from what I know I think it could be plausible. The point is that there is something wrong with the current system that allows people to just sit on these slots indefinitely. I think that EvE contains within it a capitalist economy that requires everyone to at least have a fair chance at some level, access to factory slots and lab slots for all of the peoples in EvE are part of the basic fair chance that we deserve. Even if this plan fades away in the archives of the forums hopefully it will inspire a change.
