I downloaded and installed the patch on XP Pro SP2, and every time I go to load the game, the splash screen loads for an "Instant" then goes away leaving me back at my desktop. I check task manager and no processes are running in the back ground. I have restarted my computer like the patch requested it simply wont work.

Same problem here on XP SP2. Tried renaming local settings\application data\ccp to local settings\application data\ccp-bk and my documents\eve to my documents\eve-bk, did not help.
Was running the premium client.
Currently downloading the standard client to try that, both because it's not premium and because I don't have the premium installer and would have to download a client anyways -- 600MB is better than a gig -- but *ugh*. I hate reinstalling.
I have Eve on 2 other computers, both XP SP2 (one 64-bit), and both ran without a hitch -- but both were using the standard client, as well.

Finished downloading & reinstalling the (standard) client. It worked.
For the record, I also renamed my local settings\application data\ccp-bk back to local settings\application data\ccp and my documents\eve-bk to my documents\eve -- I didn't want to deal with configuration again, and I suspected from the beginning it was probably a corrupted/missing data file or library. Whether I was right or not, reinstalling solved the problem for me (much as that sucks).
