Most career paths in Eve are pretty much equally financial rewarding for cost, time spent, etc. You don't need to necessarily decide 100% but knowing what you do and don't enjoy would help to train at this stage. Looking at training skills as either allowing you to do something new, or helping you do what you already do better, to start with, with the shorter skill training times, it's worth getting some of the more useful skills up to lvl 2-3. Including:
- Electronics, Engineering, Mechanic, Shield/Energy Management/Operation, Hull Upgrades, Weapon Upgrades, Repair Systems, Navigation.
Those skills will help with pretty much any ship or career you choose, as they benefit your ship and the items you can fit. Beyond that, you need to think of what you'd like to do now. For mining, train mining to 4, science to 3 and astrogeology to 2-3 which will make a big difference. For mission running...as a courier you might want to train to use Microwarp Drives. As a bounty hunter or kill mission player, you'll need to train for appropriate weapons. Training for up to heavy missiles and small turrets won't take long. For both agent options, connections and negotiations skill will benefit you too.
Beyond that, you'll need to know specifically what you'll want to do. You'll have to aim for particular ships and decide if you want to invest time in training for turrets, missiles or electronic gadgets. There's no right or wrong way to do that, every lvl of any skill benefits you in some way, but it's whether or not it's of any use to you is the important thing.
One bit of advice, is if you're planning to play a while, get your learning skills up to lvl 4 as soon as you have enough other skills to do basically what you need while they're training. The benefits of speeding them along sooner very quickly show themselves with shorter training times, especially on higher lvl skills.
For PvP, not doing much myself, I can't say what makes the most sense or not, but generally, getting your navigation, engineering and mechanic skills up would be a must. Weapon Upgrades will help with fitting all weapon types, and electronics, signature analysis, targetting and long range targetting will also benefit you, regardless of what role you choose to play. Beyond that, you need to train for specific weapons, be they turrets, missiles, drones or electronic warfare equipment. All have (or with missiles, will have) supporting skills to make you much better at what you do with them.
Don't think you must be in a battleship as quickly as you can, you don't need to, to be good at whatever role you choose to play (unless it's to be a below par battleship pilot ). Eve is very well balanced and structured, such that you can progress well in a logical way, both in money and skills over time, and every ship and weapon will have a good point and a bad. If you want to stick with Minmatar ships, go for it. The Tempest is probably the most flexible Battleship of all, projectiles have great range and use practically no energy to fire, if any and massive damage (at the expense of refire rate and accuracy). The frigates are the fastest, and my favourites in honesty. Most important thing is to interact with players and have fun I say...but making a little isk on the side can't be bad
