I am sure it has been talked about to death here, but I am married so my nerdly ways are leashed to a job and stuff.
Anyways, I just bought this game (then I realized they might be shutting down the servers...oh well, **** it it is free to play).
It occured to me while I was playing that I was actually having a really good time. Seriously, the game is fairly interesting and a good laugh and it does well on the blow shit up factor.
Which got me thinking...with a good bit more content this would pretty much be an mmorpg. Which lead me to my next thought...Why havent mmos done this years ago!
I am talking specifically about design! Someone finally had the balls to GET RID OF THE HEALER CLASS which has been killing fantasy mmos for ten years. I guess that is probably why I enjoy eve so much too...
But I played AOC because of the new fighting dynamic and it sucked. This game already had it figured out, I can dodge, run around use cover and all of that. Just a good game I can get on for an hour or two and feel like I did something. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. HGL was a good game. I have a founders account. I stopped playing about a month after it was released, but i still dont regret spending a total of $200 on it.
Its a great game. The only real problem was the way they handled their online.
If it had gone the full way and became a proper mmo it would probably be successful. Instancing killed it however. Also having a 'premium' that added nothing worth getting was bad. They should not have allowed free play, but just had everyone subscribe. Then nobody would complain about not getting anything for premium.
I guess i will never get my two handed templar class now. I was holding out for it =/
OP. You may enjoy neocron, if you dont mind playing a game with a stupidly low population. Other than that thats a pretty spiffy game. You can only pay for it in euros though.

I also have Hellgate London and I found it to be really quite fun, The environments can be bland but that is what happens when it's always generated on the fly.
I can't actually put my finger on what everyone thinks is so bad about it, Aside from the tilesets being limited perhaps I can't really find any huge problems but the internet community took an instant disliking to it and that was that.
I haven't played in a few weeks now actually but that's basically because I completed everything normally available and then almost half the Stonehenge stuff too, if they dropped another expansion in there i'd be right back.

Edited by: Sharupak on 03/10/2008 12:20:52 Yeah, I will say there is too much instancing. But if another company picked this up and corrected those things to make it an mmo, or created a new game with the same thought processes to skills, classes and fighting, I think it would be a stupendous hit!
I just really like the errosion of the compartmentalization of tank class, dps class, and healer class. You can really tailor your playstyle as it is more based on skills items and modding/remodding your weaponry.
Also, if they reworked this game into an mmo, the PVP environment would be outstanding! _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. You have'll have to find some alternative means to do Your Thing, dude. |

I liked HGL. played it with my friends for several months. yeah, it gets old but game had its moments
I absolutely loved the design of armor pieces. many of them were unique and really looked good. best looking armors in any game.
kind of sad that it went how it did for Flagship, but they kind of left the game unfinished in my opinion. great ideas, bad execution.

Hellgate suffered from a forced early release, a dual client system, and alienation of the larger single player community.
Game was fun, but I found that it got a bit tedious towards the end. The final boss fight at the end was a surprising challenge as my engineer subclass. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

Balance was an issue that upset many I think, I know it's been fixed now but the Rapid fire skill combined with a Zeus laser rifle used to decimate whole rooms instantly, Twin Igniter laser pistols were even worse.

Still, 200 dollars for a so called founder account (I have no idea what that is) and you only played a month. Given what I have heard about HGL im just blown away at your post and blatant waste of money. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

This right here.
It was fun, the first time around the 'story' (A flipping book that popped up every now and then in a crappy cinematic) Nothing, and I mean NOTHING to do once you 'beat' the game. You could do it all over again, except this time the NPC's have more HP and damage (whoopie) PvP? Fat chance, there was no sense of accomplishment in PvP. It was mindless as fighting the crappy NPC AI scripts. Gotta be the most repetitive game ever. It makes eve missions look fun. I spec'd an engineer and pretty much runned and gunned through the entire game. All MMO's have some mindlessness to them, Failgate:London is 95% mindless. Example. I was fighting some lame boss in somebodies head. He was aggrod on my bot, he wasn't gonna go down. So I pretty much setup the TV remote on the left mouse button and watched as his HP slowly went down. I laughed at around 70% HP (which took about 20 minutes) and just closed the stupid game out.

Personally, I thought it was the most useless, worst voice acted, worst modelled, worst written and badly put together sack of mindless and pointless drivel I've ever had the misfortune to play.
I mean seriously, visually it was HORRIBLE (even on a top end machine), the voice acting was appauling and the map design was horrendous.
The only redeeming feature was a couple of good tracks from it's soundtrack. The rest was a pointless and badly mashed together hybrid of games that did nothing even remotely entertaining for me.

But what did you think about... 1. The playability? Being able to run and shoot on the move being more fluid? 2. Class structure? I made a summoner and still have a wide selection of guns, mods, and armor.
I personally feel that the multi million dollar mega mmos comming out just flat out fail with the Tank can only take hits, dps dies when barely touched and none of them can survive in a raid instance without a healer to which people only make to join raids with type of game balance. The next mmo should take these two concepts and implement good content defined by your post. How cool of a game would that be? _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I believe it could have been an awesome game. If they had more areas, if they had better, rewardable pvp, if the NPC's were more serious(minor). But something slipped through the cracks and the execution was just bad.
