The last 4 months in eve for me have been a pain in the proverbial exhaust port...
I've made the decision that it's time to train for capital ships, so i made a "capital ship skill fund"...
Just managed to hit the half bil mark today and realised that even if i get the 1 bil + i need for the skills alone (wich i could start training right now if i had them), getting the ship, modules and insurance would be completely impossible for me, considering that i only have 1 account and this character...
So i ask you, should i just forget about the capital ships and keep specialising in battleships (already have BS 5, can use all large t2 hybrids, full lvl 5 resistances and mechanic skills, compensation and engineering skills and drone skills) , specialise in something else (like HACs) or just keep on gathering isk for the skills and the capital ships, no matter how impossible the goal seems for me?
Suggestions would be appreciated because this whole cap ships thing has screwed up my gameplay in the past 4 months, i barely have the will to buy ANYTHING, just to preserve the isk for the fund...

If you can't even afford the skillbooks, why are you bothering about thinking to fly one? |

Edited by: TYCONDEROGA on 04/10/2008 00:07:26 For someone in your position, there are a few questions I would ask:
- Do you live in 0.0? - Going for Carriers or Dreads? - Does your alliance/corp frequently participate in large scale fleet battles? - Does your alliance/corp hand out "loaner dreads" to trusted members?
If you live in 0.0, training for and owning your own personal carrier can be a great relief to the logistical problems one is normally faced with. Think of it like your own mini jump freighter. And of course you can always have some fun with it in PVP, but if you can barely afford the skill books.... I think losing your carrier would be too terrible a blow to bare.
Training dreads? Well one thing I know I've personally run into, as well as a few of my friends is when you finally after months of hard work and grinding, have your own dread, it just sits in the hangar collecting dust. I would suggest at least training the skills so you have the option in the future to use one.
I've been a member of 2 different alliances in my time in eve that handed out "loaner dreads" during fleet ops. It's a good feeling to:
1. be trusted with corp assets 2. not be worried about losing everything you own, should the battle go sour.
Thats my take on it... hope this helps.

Your reply is illogical at best...
That's just like telling a new player "if you can't even afford the books to fly a cruiser, why even bother about thinking to fly one"?

Money is easy to earn, even easier if your corporation give you the skillbooks.

I say specialise in battleships, and below. Hac's, recons, stealth bombers and commands ships are fantastic to fly, more agile, cheaper to replace, imo more fun and training all these to lvl 5 are worth it and less painful than training caps/dreads and what not to 5.
Rule one in eve for 90% of people i think is dont fly what you cant afford to replace.
One day when you have plenty of isk's invest in the cap skills and get the ship of your dreams. But if you do go this route think really hard will i use it? How much will i use it? Where will i use it? I think this applies to most things ingame, you dont wanna waste time training for things you hardly use.
Train for what your doing now, missions, trade or whatever, but still have a goal.
Remember its your game your character do what you want.
Enjoy the ride! |

Good post :)
I am specialised already (hacs, covops, bs, CS, HIC), i am at the point where i need to move on to capital ships, and isk is an issue :|
Would "power of 2" be a good idea?

Just train the support skills for capitals
*Advanced Spaceship Command 5 *Jump Drive Calibration 4 *Jump Drive Operation 5 *Jump Fuel Conservation 4 *Advanced Weapon Upgrade 5 *Drone Interface 5 *Capital Ship 3
One of these or two *Amarr Battle Ship 5 *Caldari Battle Ship 5 *Gallente Battle Ship 5
Then pick up the racial capital books (carrier/Dread) when or if you can. Worst case is that you end up never using but have the skills if needed.
And remember, sometimes when fighting other alliances you could end up with free capital ships that are just sitting in their POS.
Wouldn't it be nice to have the skills to fly it if that happens?

Edited by: Pteranodon on 14/10/2008 12:28:25 My alt has finished training cap ships & the initial investment was big he must have spent 3 billion so far -lets see where it went on that Thanatos.
Skills Books 900 million 25 Fighters 500 million Ship cost 950 million Insurance 250 million
The rest of the fittings took the rest of the 3 billion.
However- I say plan it & go for it-earn the ISK from ratting or buy some GTC's if your rich but do it.
The advantage is that you will become wanted by most corps as a valuable member of there team & if you fly as a fleet & never alone you will give a warm fuzzy feeling to those around you.
One final point-never fly a cap ship alone-you will mostly die even with level 5 cap skills.

This can't possibly be true, There is no way you have got all relevant skills to lvl 5 for all these ships, and support skills to 5...

You live in 0.0 and can barely sc**** together half a bil? wtf? You're doing something wrong! I've amassed around 14b of cash and assets in quite poor 0.0 space through 5 months of play. ratting 1-2 hours a day on average. ==================================================

Training for cap ships without the intent/possibility of flying them seems kinda pointless.
So unless you intend to join a larger .0 alliance they are useless in your case. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

Even small corps operate out in npc 0.0 from time to time, and use carriers to do so. Even small corps need to field dreads in low sec to defend assets from time to time. Cap ships are not just about big alliances in 0.0, small industrial corps can earn enough isk to possess cap fleets as company assets....

I know of an industrial alliance that could field 200+ caps with 3 titans. Too bad they hide them.
