I dont play a lot atm but when I do i tend to do the above things.
Is there a ship that is a good all rounder for me?
Ive just learned how to fly destroyers.

If you want to do all 3 activities at once, then a destroyer will have the necessary slots - 8 high slots for guns, mining lasers, salvagers.
There are better ships for each activity, but a destroyer can do all 3 at a basic level. When I started, I'd mine in a Catalyst and pop rats as they presented themselves, then salvage them while mining the whole time.

6 guns on highs, couple salvagers, some repair modules, some ammo and you'll be set. Maybe throw on a microwarpdrive or afterburner or somethin.

Tractor beam can be handy as well.

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 05/10/2008 02:10:48 My advice is - don't do that. Each ship in EVE is good at certain things but not so good at others. Use the right tool for the job.
For mining - get a mining frigate. They only have two high slots but they give bonus's for mining laser output and cpu buffs. You'll only get 3 mining lasers on a destroyer because of the CPU. With the bonus's the Mining Frigate gets it will easily out mine it.
They're like 20k. If you take the 10 mission set from the Industrial School Event Agent - you'll get one for free and maybe a bpc to make some more.
The Amarr Tormentor is the best solo mining frigate as it can use 3 cargo expanders, giving it the biggest capacity of the lot.
The Gallente Navitas and the Caldari Bantam are good.
The Minmatar Burst is the worst as it has no drone.
That drone can kill destroyers in .4 space so you can use it to protect you while you mine, then come back with a hauler with a Salvager on it and get your jet can and the wrecks. (Of course it would be vastly better to have someone in that hauler WHILE you were mining and just using the jet can to transfer the ore).
Destroyers are very good for running level I missions. Get two of them. Fit one out with weapons and the other with tractors and salvagers. Bookmark a wreck in each zone, turn in the mission and have your salvaging ship warp back to salvage the wrecks. Oh ... and don't orbit the rats. But big guns on the destroyers, a good afterburner, and Kite them. That is, get their agro and get them to chase you while you kill them as they try to close.
Don't do what you say you want to do. It is a mistake.
Specialization in this game is the key to success. What you think you want to do is a bad idea.
What you want are:
Destroyers for running and salvaging missions. A Mining Frigate for mining. An Industrial for hauling what you mine - plus - those other ships if you don't insure them.
Depending on what your attributes are (they should be blanaced) you can have all three of those ships in a week.
Drones Level I and Scout Drones Level I will let you fly the one drone those mining frigates can carry.
So, all of this is easy to do. Don't cripple yourself trying to use the wrong tool for the job.

With a few skills trained you can get 5 gaussian pulses on a cormorant which gives you 200 m3/minute. (+ skills) Cormorant is a decent level 1 mission runner with 8 turrets.
If you're doing much mining you probably want to get into an osprey ASAP.

I agree that as soon as you can, you should move towards ships/skills that are best for each activity. That having been said, I did have some fun multitasking in a cormorant for awhile.
2 150mm railguns, 2 miner 1, 2 salvagers and 1 tractor beam in the high slots. I'd go into a mission with the miners off line, kills the NPCs and then salvage the wrecks. Then take the guns off line and turn on the miners. After filling the rest of the hold (with cargo expander) with ore, return to base and close out the mission. ---------------------------------------

Yes - I was trying to make that point. This isn't a long term solution and the destroyer does all these things adequately. There are better ships for all the individual tasks, but for a newbie, a destroyer will do everything to an adequate level to get you some ISK and allow you to progress.
Plus it's a bit of fun when you're new to mine away with 4 mining lasers, pop rats with 3 guns and salvage the wreck all without leaving the belt. If you can use a tractor, drop a miner and fit that, it will make the looting/salvaging a bit quicker. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Edited by: savaker on 13/10/2008 13:44:47 Ok thanks for that guys...
Ive had fun with a Cormorant and now Im ready to fly Caldari cruisers. I now have the money to buy an Osprey and I also now own a badger for hauling cans.
My plan, for now, is to set up at a 0.5 station and then fly the Osprey out to do missions, rat and mine and then return with the Badger to collect can and salvage.
Is it worth doing it like this, and if so what would be a good setup for the Osprey...or is it a stupid idea and I should set up my operations diferently.
(P.S. I'm not really interested in being ultra efficient, Im more interested in having a varied evenings play with the minimum of docking to bring out new ship...I will specialise at a later date).

If you are wanting one ship to do all of those with, i would use a destroyer. im guessing you are gallente since you are mining. so the catalyst is your best bet. i actually had a catalyst setup for this exact thing not too long ago. i had 6 turrets, one miner, and one salvager.
Dont use a frigate, they normally only have 2-3 turret slots, so you will find yourself constantly having to dock and re-fit, depending on what you are doing. _____________________ *warp drive acti...wait, where are we going?*

Things have moved on a bit..
Ive bought a Badger and an Osprey and have hooked up with some itinerant miners.
This means that I can follow the advice given above and keep a ship for mining, buy a couple for ratting and salvaging and carry the whole lot around with me in an industrial.
So rather than start a new thread, I'm guessing that my next purchases should be a couple of Destroyers for the ratting, mission running and salvaging..and only buy more Cruisers when I am much richer?
I'm Caldari so I figure I'm back to getting two Cormorants?
As before, any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This is likely to be the case - though it depends what level of missions you'd be talking about. If you're doing level 1 missions, and ratting in high-sec, then a destroyer will actually do those missions faster than a cruiser as it's perfectly suited to taking out frigates (and your small weapon skills are likely to be better than your medium weapon ones). If you're starting level 2 missions then a cruiser will be better suited to the task. It's not so much the cost per se, as mission-running ships are really an investment, but rather what is best suited to the task.
Quote: I'm Caldari so I figure I'm back to getting two Cormorants?
The Cormorant is the only Caldari destroyer, so yes, assuming that you don't want to cross-train (which would be a bad idea at this stage) then it's the only one you'll be able to fly. Which isn't a bad thing, as it's a perfectly competant ship - the dual range bonuses mean you can take out rats from obscene distances.
Having said that, you wouldn't necessarily need two Cormies - the only reason to have two would be so that you could keep your mission fitting on one ship, and a salvaging fitting on the other, and just switch between them. If your budget doesn't stretch to two ships there is nothing wrong with using the same ship for both, and in the 30 seconds you'd need to wait before switching ships anyway, strip the combat fitting from your ship and put the salvaging modules back on. It's slightly more hassle but does avoid the need to buy two separate ships.
