Crashing out of the game because of server side disco due to lag is bad enough - but then always losing all deployed drones because they do not emeergency warp like the ship does... unneccessary and badly implemented by ccp.
Been playing since over 4 years, and this "feature" has been like this since the beginning. How many more years till ccp finally fixes it?

Huh? You're saying you don't like losing control of your drones when you d/c? I hate losing control of all the probes I just placed. YARR! |

It's not a 'bug' as they are quasi independent entities. They don't follow you otherwise when you warp... why should they follow you if you CTD?
The game doesn't discriminate between the events. Annoying, but I doubt CCP will change it.

As I said, it is a "feature".
But a bad one. Emergency warp for drones - just as for the ship (same timer etc) - if a disconnect happens. Seems like a way better "feature" than the current one

Edited by: Misanth on 05/10/2008 10:05:30 While it is annoying, there's some simple answers to this.
First off, designing the game with protection for disconnects is pretty.. sick. I doubt neither CCP nor you wish that d/c's would happen.
Second, don't fly what you can't afford. We all lose (or well we should) ships in all kind of manners (obviously this means drones as well). It's part of the isk sink, if noone loses stuff it kills the market eventually. The day everyone in EVE is multi-billionare, isk has no value, how are you going to buy assets? It's down to medieval, I'll trade you my bs for two cruisers and a t2 frig? Or we all end up mining, like the early days of EVE.
Last time I lost drones I estimate I lost some 100-150mil in a single fight. I was in my Carrier, a couple of fighters stopped responding in the lag. I managed to pull in the rest, and released a load of sentry drones instead. When the FC called to cyno out, the sentries refused to respond and I had to leave them behind.
It's part of the game. You can't expect total control of everything, you never know, next time you are out flying thinking you are safe, someone might decide to suicide gank you. Even tho you havn't got valuable. Why? because they can, and they just feel for it.
Everything in EVE can, and should be put at risk.

Krystal Demishy, thanks for pointing to your thread. Signed it.
Misanth, while disconnects are not nice, and neither is lag - this kind of stuff happens on the net as we all know. So, when designing a game which is to be played on the net, it is wise to take this into account.

I realise and respect that opinion, I just happen to disagree.
Please remember that almost every ship I fly is using drones, more or less, and I got my drone skills near maxed/all t2 drones. I love drones myself.
A lag protection for drones would be great - if we're talking PvE, but if we're considering the PvP aspects there's just way too much ways to abuse it. How would it be solved? Emergency warping drones? Will they be attached to your ship or go another route?
If they follow you in emergency warp they will make it easier to probe down your ship, which is bad in itself. If they spread out, how are they going to get back to you, e-warp back to you? What if you have a cloaked ship, gets back after d/c and instantly cloak up to be safe from hostiles in system, just to get decloaked and/or probed down by having your own drones giving you away?
It's just too complicated to solve such a small thing. It's alot easier to accept that disconnects might kill your ship - including drones. And just fyi, I have lost a few drones to d/c's, lag (like the example in my previous post), and a few times to bugs - like calling them back to the ship, they get hit, and for some reason they stop in space refusing to move and get shot down. In the last case I have petitioned it, and gotten my drones back. I'd recommend going that way if you lose drones in PvE, rather than having the programming putting you at risk in PvP.
Not to mention as I said, the best approach to ships, modules etc, is to expect to lose it, to anything, no matter what. Just my opinion tho, as pointed out above.

Edited by: Soulita on 05/10/2008 11:24:06 Misanth, the ease of probing down a ship with drones close by is a good point. The only good one I heard yet which would speak against emergency warping drones with the ship when you get disconnected.
IMHO, the ease of probing drones does not make sense (they are very much smaller than a ship - also missiles, projectile and railgun ammo or lasers can not be probed at all) This is another issue with drones that ccp should have a look into.
I know CCP has improved drones since the beginning of the game, but there is still a lot of work left...

I don't see how exactly.
Scanning down someone in deadspace is incredibly hard and very, very time consuming if you use recon probes. Drones are the only thing that make it really possible/feasible at all.
If you use scan probes (Quests, etc) then it doesn't matter because if you're within 4 AU of the target you can pick up the ship itself pretty easily.

The solution I think is fair is that NPCs detarget them when the player warps off and they go inert.
Also when the player warps back from an emergency warp they should automatically be returned to their control.

In the ingame fiction drones dont have warp drives, so they cant war out.
However, what i don't understand is that these are semi-autonomous AI controlled combat drones, that sit there and get blown away by the lowliest rat when your ship gets DC'd. They should at least defend themselves against aggressors.
Advanced drone features would also be nice, although are likely to course all sorts of issues.
For example; the drones could assign themselves to the nearest pilot in fleet with there (DC'd) owner,
the drones could remain connected to the ship, albeit in the 'distant range' bracket and engage hostiles randomly, perhaps with reduced effectiveness,
a drone that has been DC'd could return to the owners last known position before shutting down (I hate travelling 50km to pickup my drones only to get there as the last one pops :( )
Just some idea's to mull over, pick apart, flame, troll at, or whine about carebears.
