my corp wardecced somebody today, and after 10 minutes they surrendered to us.
Do we get anything by them surrendering? do they lose anything?
if the answer is no for both then couldn't carebear corps almost entirely avoid wardecs by surrendering to anyone who attacks them?

Hmm... I don't believe that anyone receives or loses anything from this. As a proud member of a corp that is in a state of near-perpetual conflict, I've seen the occasional surrender notice. As far as I know, the only thing that happens when someone surrenders is that the war eventually ends without fanfare.
tbh it's sort of lame and needs some work as a game mechanic.

Usually there are terms for the surrender. I didn't think anyone could just surrender without some sort of spoils for the winners.

all a surrender does is open a trade screen in which the surrendering corp gives any spoils of war (items or isk) for exchange for an end to the war. Both CEOs must be in the same station to accept a surrender (at least a in game official one).
A unofficial one would just be a isk transfer and a retracting of the wardec.
The advantage is sometimes people might be able to pop the surrendering CEO before he arrives to the surrendering station (if you want to be evil), or you can get items like ships and faction loot.
Disadvantage is either side can be jumped while on route, and both CEOs must be online and in the same station in order for it to be complete.
