It was something of a flop. I'm still very pleased with much of what was generated but I have to be me and call a flop a flop.
In retrospect I think that this idea was a bit aggressive, either in scope or time frames, but may have legs in the future as well. Many potential applicants were primarily concerned with the time frames. Let me say this:
Feel free to submit the ideas and stories
The fact that this incarnation of the contest met with failure, from my perspective, does not mean this is over. Eve Guardian is about the news but it is just as strongly about the stories as well.
We will always be looking for excellent fan written material to showcase. And given enough activity you will see this contest, likely with a better focus, in the near future. I fully plan on that.
I'm currently finalizing arrangements to reward those author's who have contributed such fine work to this contest.
In one case there is clearly someone, from the entered stories, who would've grabbed my highest marks. His story will be featured starting tomorrow and continue in it's tale as long as needed. (And he needs that much space!!!)
I will also be working on seeing that the other authors get equal space but relative to the impact/nature of their stories. (One author is very good at short, brief, stories but with troubling depth. Makes you think!)
So I thank everyone involved. And I hope that the fruits of this exercise clears up many of the questions, or misconceptions, of the purpose of this contest. For applicants and potential sponsor's alike!
BTW Sponsorship is still possible... I'd like to increase the just rewards of these authors but I'm close to my limit, being the sole sponsor, that I can. And I'm not done with negotiations at that!
If you read an author's story and would like to sponsor his works. Just contact us at Eve Guardian to speak to us about it.
PS: Actually the learning series I started today is also something of another entrant in the contest. But since it is my own work I'm not really entitled to have it judged along with the rest. However it does make a good example of what can be an "episodical story". Eve Guardian - Former Reporter

As one of the entries I look forward to hearing everyone's takes on this contest and the works invovled. I do believe I'm the "lengthy" writer Shar mentions.
As for me, here are a few suggestions for the next contest idea:
1. Give it a theme - Say for instance you want a "mystery" or perhaps a "combat story" you'll be helping us all.
2. Word Count limits - Most major writing contests have word counts. It'll help prevent you getting the really "long" entries like mine.
Umm... I think that's all I've got at the moment. Once again, thank you for the kind words. *Bows* Never forget, a Jack-of-all-trades is master of none. |

Yeah you are the lengthy one... your story is currently rolling out as I type.

I'd hate to go theme. I think the episodical theme was part of the failing. But if it encourages someone to try it even if they missed out on this contest, or future ones, then it is a good thing.

Not just no, but heck no!
In your case, Mr. "I'll E-mail in 22 pages titled Chapter 1 of 6", I can utilize my position as Editor to help you focus the work in progress. Or, as I did with you, point out where natural rhythmic breaks occur in the story to help reduce the word count per episode published. (And you do have a very good feel for story rhythm btw.)
All in all it's just a fun way to encourage more things like this. And it's not bad for EG too... Eve Guardian - Former Reporter

Edited by: Raem Civrie on 23/06/2004 18:50:51 Shar, I revised all of my stories very recently. They are here on the forums in their most recent forms, and I'd like if those were published on E-G rather than the old versions.
[Edit] Congrats, Richard. I'll have to make a point of reading those stories when I get the time.

Thank you one and all, as I see the first section is up. A very small section indeed, but a nice warm-up to things to come. :)
I do hope you all enjoy it. Never forget, a Jack-of-all-trades is master of none. |

This will sound horribly lazy but could you send those into me via e-mail.... the links at the least. I've really been swamped trying to manage things (I wish I could make EG my sole occupation but alas...)

Pfft. You should see my boss on the prowl. Not to mention I work as a lawnmower in a cemetary, so seeing someone erupt from the bushes to catch you on a break is magnified somewhat.
