Well Post patch my standard 250MM's are having absolutely no trouble hitting NPC frigs around there optimal ranges...
But you also have to consider the enemies transversal velocity... IF they are orbiting you or whatever, they have a higher transversal velocity, and there is a point where not even the fastest medium turret can hit the target.
Anyway while it's a known issue that some things are bugged, and the Devs have said they are going to audit ("Tweak") turret tracking speeds ASAP, I still think your failure to kill the 3 frigates was largely due to some kind of pilot error...
A thorax has a drone bay of 2000, that means could carry 40 light drones... or 20 medium drones, or 8 heavy drones... or almost any combination...
If your telling us your drones, even light ones died without doing you any good, it means you launched them too early... Wait till the NPC's have YOUR SHIP targetted, preferably firing as well before you launch your drones.
Next make sure your ship is stopped... This improves how fast your guns track frigs.
Next look at your skills, do you have motion prediction? Did you have modules that boost tracking speed for turrets?
When in doubt fit a small turret or two, in terms of DOT, even one 125MM rail should be enough to keep your thorax alive easily against just about any three normal NPC frigs.
What really stands out however is the simple fact that you lost your ship in the first place... That should never happen against more or less standard NPC encounters... Unless they had you scrambled and locked down so you couldn't escape, why didn't you just warp away the instant you realised you couldn't win?
So while I agree there is something fishy about the turret tracking (not overly so, but it's still annoying sometimes), I still think that the loss of the fight, and even more so the loss of your ship, was due to pilot error.
Don't fret too much, I know it sucks to lose a ship to NPC's, especialy in a situation like that, but if your thorax was ensured, and you where able to get some of your good modules back, just chalk the loss up to experience.
Remember when in danger, when in doubt, unless your scrambled, warp the hell out.
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.
