Let me began by saying that what brought me into this game is the idea of warfare among the stars. A PvP style favored by games like Guild Wars and Dark Age of Camelot in space is indeed welcoming to me. Unfortunately, with the slow play style that EvE goes on makes it impossible to quickly get into the action. However, being patient, I ask this question:
"What does it take to be of help in factional warfare."
For RP reasons, I picked Gallente despite the threads screaming how they and their ally is getting the short stick. (Personally, fighting for the losing side has more thrills)
So here I am, 4.5 million sp later, wondering if I'm good enough for FW and what would it take....
What do you guys think?

If you can fly a T1 frig, you can fight in faction warfare. You'll often get killed by older players like myself, but T1 frigs are cheap and you'll learn from the experience. But besides all that, I don't think this thread in right section of the forums and that you'd be better off asking it elsewhere.

Who you fight for =/= which ships you fly. There is nothing stopping you from flying Caldari ships in the Gallente militia (and in fact, this is what you should do).

Is it really that much of a loss if I try not to be cliche and not be caldari? *groans*

Caldari suck in PvP so just stick with the Gal
For Gal its about drones and blasters and using armor.
Caldari are about missiles, shields and E-War.
Now go out and start attacking random people in low sec(0.4 and lower).

Ignore this. Caldari and Amarr dominate PvP in the current metagame, while Gallente are mediocre at best.

Sorry for a half hijacking of this thread. But I wondered about this since I first read this word in the forum and I suppose some others do to:
What is meant with "metagame"? I have no idea what this is supposed to mean...please explain:)

What it means is using outside of the game mechanics for gain within the game, like spying on teamspeak, gaining access to other people's forums through misrepresentation, having alts used for spying, I think what he is referring to is the current climate of falcon alts to compliment geddon / blasterthron mains

Your skill point total doesn't matter much as there is always something to do even for a brand new character. Tackling, light ewar, frig swarm .. lot's of things to get into regardless of skills.
The new 800k characters allow for getting a frigate with t2 guns within hours/days of creation so a lot of people have made FW alts to mess around with.
A lot of the action is in frigates and cruisers as the majority of plexes can accommodate them so the uber-leet BS pilots have very little to do usually.
You are, as it has been said, free to use any ship you want unless you are restricted by RP or something, so fly what is fun.
Gallente may be getting the short end of the stick, but Matari certainly isn't. The Minmatar are the Caldari of the other front line with a significant numerical advantage.
Last thing. If you do join up make sure you read The FW Guide, it will save you a lot of question time in regards to what it's all about and where to go/what to do.

Its not just the "metagame" really. Caldari and Amarr are fleet ships. They are one-dimensional. They are difficult to fit utility onto (like tackling gear) and their drones are mediocre at best. In a fleet fight (like many in FW), drones just aren't very effective and the fleets are large enough where not everyone needs to bring a point or web and the fights are short enough where neuts don't really matter. Basically, Amarr & Caldari have ships that are inherently better at mid-range fleet fights, like every single fight you'll be in if you just roam with the rest of the militia fleets.
For small gang however, Gallente and Minmatar are very good and that's really where they shine. Its important to realize the difference between the two. That being said, in FW, its easy to get into range since the fights are usually at mid-range and short-range, so fitting all out blaster fit/DPS isn't a terrible thing and this is something that Gallente are quite good at. Basically, I don't know anyone that complains when someone shows up in a T2 fit blasterbrutix for FW fighting.

Not nope. "Metagame" is a concept that's been around a lot longer than MMORPGs and alt accounts... I borrow it from Magic (the card game), but IIRC, it goes back to pen/paper RPG days, though in a somewhat different sense.
The general idea is that the "metagame" refers to thinking outside the rules of the game. For example, the card game itself has its set of rules, and you use them when you sit down and play your opponent. The metagame involves thinking about things like "well, deck X is popular around here, so I should use deck Y that has a good win percentage against it". Essentially, you pick your strategy based on not just the rules of the game itself, but on what the other players are likley to do.
The alt/spying/etc issue has more to do with the RPG sense of the term, where "metagaming" means things like "well, the DM has to have given us SOME kind of treasure here... my character starts to search for a hidden door". There's usually a connotation that metagaming is in some way against the spirit of the game, even if it's technically legal.
I use the term in the first way, there's nothing wrong about metagaming, it just means you consider the environment your game will take place in. In this case, I'm refering in large part to the decline of solo PvP (where Gallente have more advantages) in favor of fleet combat (where Amarr and Caldari dominate, and Gallente suck). The current environment favors going with the Caldari/Amarr strategy, even if in some abstract sense, both are perfectly balanced.
Originally by: Dasalt Istgut For small gang however, Gallente and Minmatar are very good and that's really where they shine. Its important to realize the difference between the two. This is wrong. Gallente ships have more EFT damage, however once you factor in tracking and travel time, Caldari and Amarr ships tend to do much better real damage over the course of a fight. The EFT damage difference between a Gallente ship and an Amarr/Caldari ship usually isn't very large, and Gallente ships have absolutely pathetic range.
So while I might not complain if someone brought a Brutix to my gang, especially if my numbers aren't so good, but I'd definitely wish they'd brought a Harbinger or Drake instead.

Thank you all for replying.
What do you guys recommend as a set up for a gallente frig and gallente cruiser for faction war?
My skills goes towards shield tanking and hybrid guns atm.

Gallente are armor tankers, so you would really have to train the skills associated with that. Hybrids is the weapon-type for both Caldari and Gallente, so no problems there. The Incursus frigate is a popular choice, and then there's a tie between Thorax and Vexor on the cruiser side. As for setup, you are much better off asking in Gallente militia chat about that, as it varies depending on the fleet you'll be in. Mostly it will be a PVP setup, of course, even if you go out plexing, despite that being PVE.
