This means you cyclists!
Get out of the road!
Now I may sound like an angry car driver, in fact I am. In the UK we do like to have our space on the roads and this is generally proven by the mass distaste for cyclists. We also assign little lanes and things for cyclists so they don't die too much.
Before I continue, I cycle to work 90% of the time, when I'm starting early, I need to drive in. But yeah, I cycle. But i stick to the pavements because I'm too lazy to go fast and I dont wanna hold up traffic with my slowness.
Alas when I drive home I drive through the city. The roads are cramped because, in the UK, we restrict roads width and stick islands along them to make people limit speed.
So I'm driving at 30 on this busy main road from Portsmouth to Portchester, and theres some woman on a bike. Shes quite serious about her cycling because shes got all the lycras on. Shes going for it.
Shes cycling on the road, okay fine. I slow up behind her, i'm just letting my car crawl along in drive. She's pedalling like a maniac trying to go fast enough to keep up speed.
She won't move. Normally I wouldnt expect her to, but I look to her left...
On the sidewalk is a BRIGHT FRICKIN' RED dedicated lane for cyclists, off the road so they don't get mashed into the kerb. Why isn't she there!
She should be riding on her dedicated cycle lane if its available, not holding up traffic in the road. This instantly makes me a bit angry so I lean on the horn a bit. (I do love my horn.)
She stops in the road and looks around, I drive a LHD car (Yay american) so shes' massively confused, she's looking for a driver and there isnt one. As soon as she spots me on the left she starts giving it biggun's.. I point to this little cycle lane and storm off with the V8 scream of rage.
If the council go through the trouble of laying down a nice, smooth dedicated off-road lane for cyclists to use on this stretch of road, I don't expect to see cyclists ON THE ROAD, come on. That narrow road is home to not only cars, but massive articulated trucks... Deathwish much?
The last thing I want is chunks of lycra-clad flesh stuck to my radials.

Edited by: Benco97 on 08/10/2008 10:44:27 I have a very similar annoyance actually, Horses. EVERYWHERE. They ride slowly on down the road and laugh and wave at everyone from their horse and I just think to myself "WE ARE SURROUNDED BY MILES AND MILES AND MILES OF FIELDS YET YOU INSIST ON USING THE ROADS! WHHHHYYYYYYYY?!" It very much annoys me because there are so many horse riders in my area and you never see them galloping through fields, just slowly ambling along the main roads.#
Edit- and you can't beep and shout at them for fear of the horse going psycho and kicking the windscreen into your face or throwing the rider. Really annoys me..

I predict further frustration with cyclists the longer the automobile industry is dominated by oil/gas using vehicles.
I know what you mean, and the worst part about cyclists in the US is many times they think that they have the right of way when in all actuality they are supposed to follow the same traffic rules. For instance, like yielding the path if you are unable to keep up the pace. Some places have dedicated lanes and they typically are used when available.
The main issue in the States is that the infrastructure in the US was built around the concept of cars not foot and buggy like much of the old world. So I can see how this would be a big problem in Europe. I cringe when I see cars pass each other on roads in movies that are filmed in Europe muc less having a bike on the side of the road to top it off

Maybe the UK needs to borrow a concept or 2 about cycling from the netherlands? Most major roads have designated cycling paths running alongside them, or atleast a section of the road indicated as a cycling lane, that way neither motorists or cyclists get in each others way and you both get where you are going.

We do have that, thats what I'm talking about. As i said, there was a specific cycling lane on the sidewalk and this woman was on the freakin' road!
Also, about the traffic in Manila there, well.. Those people just don't realise how much a car hurts if it hits you eh.

Bikes shouldnt be allowed on the road as they are NOT taxed. We pay car tax, road tax, vehicle registration tax etc etc. Bikes pay for fuk all, cause accidents, they become accidents and generally ignore the rules of the road too. Look at it this way .... see a cyclist, see that target symbol painted on their backs? Ready .. aim ... fire!!
As for horses, the law that protects horses and their riders (they have right of way etc) goes back to the time motorised vehicles first made an appreance. As no one could believe that cars would EVER become a serious mode of transport laws were enacted to make sure that horses got rights over cars on the roads of the UK. Personally, whenever I see a horse I think of it as a Sandwich American, as the Belgians call it. Horse meat tartar with herbs, a light vinegerette in a crusty bagette. Yum yum!

This tbh.
Part of the reason I ride my bike on the sidewalk. I don't consider a bicycle to be a motorised vehicle, its not taxed, therefore it shouldn't be on the road. If anything its just a pedestrian on wheels.
Part that annoys me is that cyclists get all ****y at you when you give them a bit of horn, I paid my taxes to use my horn damnit.

In New Zealand, they have stopped putting 'Cycle Lanes' as part of the foot paths because the pedestrians complained the cyclist went too fast and caused accidents.
A number of cities had started putting cycle lanes on the road, which was really good until people started to use them to park their cars in.
I cycle to work here at CCP every day (except during the middle of winter) and the issue is if you ride on the road, the cars hate you, ride on the foot paths and the pedestrians complain ... you can't win.

Edited by: Heather Drauls on 08/10/2008 13:30:22 Let's face it, it doesn't really matter if it's a pedestrian, cyclist, horse or other car driver. If they're being inconsiderate they're a pain in the ass.
Then again drivers like everyone else can be idiots. My dad was trying to cycle home from the pub once. Very drunk (should have walked but there we go). Fell off the bike in the road and rather than anyone help him, more the bike, drag him off the road, they just drove up onto the pavement and went round him. This was on Heath Street at the top of Hampstead and if any of you know it.. it's not exactly wide.
As far as taxes go, the land those roads are on belong to all of us so unless there's a law/by law that says you shouldn't be on it (dual carriage ways, motorways etc.) it's down to who got there first.
I don't like having to over take horses though as I have a V8 too and horses aren't fond of the noise it makes. Kinda just accelerate a little bit, slap it in neutral and glide silently by....

Calm yourself with the thought that beligerant cyclists usually end up picking a fight they can't win and end up in a wheel chair. Which is fine by them as they still hold the moral high ground. So everyone is happy.

When your lane is on the sidewalk, you have no excuse. And if I was being an ass, I'd consider it your lane when you start handing over some road tax for it.
Regardless, I personally never park my car in the cycle lane as - A. its illegal and B. Cycle lanes are on main roads and I value the condition of my fenders.
And perhaps C. The opportunity has never arisen.

Here in the US, at least where I live (and then depending on the township) there are a set of rules for bike riders, most of it is common sence Go against traffic, announce where your coming from if passing a padestrian "On your left, on your right, etc." Dont be a douch and bike in a well used road, etc. Of course biking is more of a rec sport here then an actual means of transportation, but still. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

The cycle paths are often littered with crap and glass and generally the upkeep is pretty poor in my experience. Pedestrians wander in and out, and my local council has helped things along by making some roads configured ...
<PAVEMENT><CYCLE LANE><BUS STOP><ROAD>
Therefore forcing people to leave the bus then wander across a cycle lane onto the pavement.
I'd rather cycle in the road too, and she was doing the right thing by the sounds of it.
Whenever cyclists cycle meekly in the gutter, people take the opportunity to barge through dangerously. If I'm cycling and think there isn't a big enough gap I make sure there isn't a big enough gap. I take the decision out of the hands of the driver.
Bide your time and go around her when you get a moment. It's no big deal. I assume she doesn't stalk you and sit in front of you whenever you drive anywhere.

Heh interesting how things can differ, for me my bike is actually THE ONLY mode of transportation apart from public transit on longer distances. Now this is mostly because a driver's licence in these parts (Netherlands) is ****ing expensive on a student's budget, let alone a car. But another reason is that it is practical.
As a bit of counterweight to the chaps trying to beat each other on having the car causing the most decisive and major injuries to a biker - the thing that bothers me most of all about city traffic is the dumb inbreeds that insist on taking their car around the bloody CITY. The top speed attainable by such a vehicle in such territory is about 30km/h, with all the stopping and going inbetween the damn things are hopelessly in the way. And since nobody seems to be aware of an otherwise slow bicycle it is also customary to ignore a bike's movements altogether, where in the Netherlands there are clear-cut rules about not cutting off and hitting cyclists with your very big car.
On the other hand there are the cyclists themselves who (due to some past overprotective courses of action on the government part) think they can get away with pretty much everything, leading to half the stopping and going on the cars' part. Who'd fine a cyclist? right? 'inbreeds' comes to mind again.
Oh and the tax argument? That will prolly differ by country, but out here car taxation doesn't even come near the finances needed to keep everyone rolling on asphalt, so in the end - most does come out of the 50% they take of everyone's income, including those on a bicycle.
In the end it would all be so much nicer in the street with some consideration, common sense, and most of all looking more than 10 meters in front (and behind you once or twice) of you while operating anything with wheels.

You don't expect to pay attention to signage, everyone toots their horn all the time so you uaully know where everyone is and most people are on mopeds. If a pedestrian gets hit, they just get back up again minus a bit of skin.

In defence of riders.
Cyclists and motorcyclists have the same problem in common.
I have done both in the past and have seen a number of accidents due to car drivers either not looking properly or doing stupid things to annoy. I had a 500cc Honda Silver Wing motorcycle and had one driver delberately try to kerb me as he came out of a junction. He even grinned as I fought to keep out of his way and clear of the kerb at the same time. If I hit the kerb and the bike landed on me, it would have crushed my leg. The combination of the weight of the bike and the angle of the kerb would probably have meant a permanent injury or even amputation. As it was, I kept a steel bar in the pocket of the fairing which went through the cars windshield. That made him back off rapidly and I hope it taught him a lesson.
There are too many car drivers who think they own the road. Quick to enrage, low tolerance for other users and mostly lacking any brainpower, it seems that an IQ test is what is really needed as a part 1 rather than a highway code test. Most would fail.
Learn to chill out, relax and just go with the flow. It would make car driving a much more enjoyable experience that some of us can't even afford. I had a car for a long time but now I can't afford it, making enough to pay household bills means the extra bills for running a car is beyond my reach. Just console yourself with the thought that when it's raining or snowing, cyclists and motorcycles get cold and wet while you stay warm and dry. Either way, use some intelligence when you drive... If you have any.

Aggressive, but granted. YOU, as a motorcyclist, have the right to be on the road. You've paid up your road tax, you pay your obscene fuel prices... you can be on the road. You shouldn't get into the situation of being kerbed since you should be slap bang in the middle of the road anyway, moreover, as a nimble motorcycle you have the speed and acceleration to get out of trouble. Still, if someone tries to take you off on a motorcycle then yeah, that dude's a ****.
But the fact is, If you're riding your piece of shit bicycle on a main road with heavy carriage along it, you don't IGNORE the safe, out-of-the-way cycle lane DEDICATED to you that is off the road.
If i'd have slammed that woman off the road she would have been whining, probably severely hurt. All i would have said was "well there was the cycle path, why werent you on it?" I can't imagine what excuse she'd have.
Mainly because she has no excuse to ride on the main road if there is a dedicated lane off the road for cyclists.
Oh, and on this road, its well known for cyclists to get caught up in the rear wheels of articulated freight due to the narrow road and large turning circles those things take, recently one dude was lucky enough to get his head between the kerb and the 3 axles of a large container truck, safe to say, he didnt survive. Helmet or not, Like crushing a grape between your fingers.
This wouldn't have happened if he had been on his cycle path. The cycle path is a good 6 feet away from the road, on a raised sidewalk. Its in good condition and is pretty much brand new, not only does it provide a safe area to cycle, it also has this strange, red, grippy surface to make it easier to brake in the wet. It runs the entire length of the road in one massive straight. Its ideal, and probably the best conditions for cycling. No stopping for a good mile and a half.
I cycled to work today. I cycled on the road once to get across a junction otherwise unsafe to cross, other than that I used the cycle path and the general pavement. Pedestrians give me shit for riding on the pavement, I tell them to get ****ed. As i've said before, i'd rather annoy some fleshy humans than hold up a ton or more of speeding metal. Its just common sense to get out of the way of cars.

Past few months, I've been driving to work, about 35 miles each way. Most of that distance is along dual carriageway/motorways. Driving sensibly, using correct lane, keeping within speed limits, it takes me 45 minutes. 50min when I was conserving petrol and only driving at 55mph. Driving like an asshat, doing 90 along the high speed roads, passing on left, using the wrong lanes, amber gambling, etc. Takes me 40 minutes. and 20% more fuel.
10 minutes saving, over 70 mile round trip, is not enough to justify driving like a berk. So who are these people that drive like berks when they're only going 5 miles?
Only cyclists I've seen that have been a nuisance are the ones that cycle about 8ft from the kerb, at 15mph on a 40mph road, which when there's oncoming traffic, means they're impassable. And the ones that pass on the left when I'm sat at the lights, signalling that I'm turning left.
Yes. Yes, I am. |

Although it is illegal to cycle on a pavement in the UK unless it's marked with a cycle lane. It is, that was kind of the point I was making. The most they can do is tell you to get on the road, which is fine. You just cycle on the road for no longer than necessary and then get back into safety.
I cycle past a police station daily and the only time thats ever happened is twice. Since the station is literally 50 yards from where I work, I just dismount.
Rather that than getting sideswiped and falling into oncoming traffic tbh.

Well as a guy who owns two bikes, and use them alot I generally try to stay on the cycle lanes, but in large parts of the city (Copenhagen) there are no cycle lanes, and trust me if I ride on the sidewalk I'll get fined within a few minutes, that is if I can avoid killing anyone :)
When riding in the countryside there is no cycle lane, so you ride on the road, and generally if it's a small road i make sure that only one car can pass by me, so as not to get sideswiped by some tard who thinks he can get past me while someone else is coming the in other direction.
And as for road tax ? has nothing to do with owning a car, it's a general part of me paying my taxes so if i really wanted too I could run around naked on the road because I own every inch of it just as much as everyone else, the police might not be happy if I did it, but that is a whole other story :P

I've never seen a bike plough into the back of stationary traffic and kill 3 people.
But here we have cycle lanes throughout Cardiff. If they aren't dedicated they are joined in with the bus lanes.
Some of the biggest issues I've seen are drivers trying to go around buses/cyclists by driving into oncoming traffic, and seem to think it's fine that they had to speed up to make it back into the lane without killing someone. Also indication, people behind you aren't mind readers.
In summary, drivers are the biggest idiots on the roads.

I don't think it's that much of a problem slowing down for a second and wait for a proper chance to overtake a cyclist.
Where I live a LOT of people ride their bikes on the road and you rarely ever encounter real asshats among them that deliberately try to cause any trouble...
car drivers on the other hand can be be quite dangerous, and that's the same all over the world. There's a reason the term "road rage" exists, and it doesn't exist because of cyclists.

I'm not a giant fan of overtaking cyclists that;
A. Should be on their dedicated cycle path in the first place, B. Require me to drive over a central reservation/island and into oncoming traffic to do so.

afaik cycling on pavements is illegal? (in the UK) Not saying it should stop you, but that's probably why some people don't do it.
Quote: I have a very similar annoyance actually, Horses. EVERYWHERE. They ride slowly on down the road and laugh and wave at everyone from their horse and I just think to myself "WE ARE SURROUNDED BY MILES AND MILES AND MILES OF FIELDS YET YOU INSIST ON USING THE ROADS! WHHHHYYYYYYYY?!"
because the fields are probably privately owned by farmers and the riders would be tresspassing
In general, cycle lanes and bridleways ftw. A lot of footpaths can also be used. (though apparently cycling on a footpath could also be illegal unless it's allowed by county by-laws but I know footpaths often double as bridleways. Quite why being run over by a bike is seen as a danger to walkers but being trampled by a horse isn't, I'm not sure...)
However, there's going to be some inevitable overlap with roads when people want to go places on bikes or horses as cycle lanes and bridleways aren't everywhere and probably won't cover the whole journey.
(though obviously, where there are some, people should use them!)
Info got from here and here btw

Well, I guess you are talking about that specific situation you encountered, and while I somewhat understand it, I don't think it's a reason to get upset for more than the few moments it takes to pass.
Anyways, there's this little example: in the city I live in there's this major road that runs in a circle around the towns center. It has 3 or 4 lanes, I think that changes on different sections. Also, on some sections you have tram rails on both sides of the road. Almost the whole road has dedicated cycle lanes next to it, and next to them you got sidewalks. The cycle lanes are also (mostly) well placed and you usually don't run into any danger being run down or anything, because they are more than just friggin lines on the floor, but actually proper lanes, behind some trees.
But you -mostly- cannot use them, because, well... the area is swamped by tourists, and the pictogram of a bicycle is apparently not international... so I rather choose to dive through the metal avalanche. But I like to think I'm considerate. I pay attention to my surroundings and try not to slow anyone down.
But road rage is really common, and if you combine that with a ton of metal it gets friggin dangerous. I had cars nearly run me down on empty roads, because the drivers were ****ed for some arbitrary reason, like they got fired half an hour ago, or some shit. And I'm not even kidding. Just the other night I had a cab driver try to attack me, because he thought I was driving in the wrong direction on "his" road... even if he would have been right, which he wasn't (proper cycle lane, proper direction and everything) it's no justification for something like that.
And that's my whole point. One thing is dangerous, the other thing is merely annoying.

I own a car, bike and a motorcycle in the UK, here's my 2p.
Car drivers are by far the most ignorant, impatient and just plain stupid of road users by a mile. They (in general) are easily distracted, have poor observation skills, cannot 'read' the road and a good few I encounter on my daily route to work have not even grasped basic road discipline or indeed the laws that govern there use.
Cyclists are indeed road users and it is against the law for them to ride on the pavement, thereÆs no legal requirement for them to use cycle lanes where they are present however. Some of the most aggressive people I have seen using roads have been city centre cyclists, but most of it is in response to car drivers (see above).
Motorcyclists (proper bikes that is, not Silverwings!) in general have had more hours training/testing and many hold both car and bike entitlements (thatÆs 2 tests). Having said that, I ride my bike like a complete **** and couldnÆt give a flying **** about either of the road users above. You see what really matters is how cool you look, and IÆve got that shit down baby. I always make sure I wheelie outside the girls school thatÆs on my route to work to impress the 6th formers and everything. IÆm so confident of my place at the top of the road users food chain you peons will bend to my will on command!

I'd say you're being sarcastic... but the biking nerve somehow tells me you aren't...
Anyways, you are FASTER but not really the top end of the food chain. Because the food chain is not about being fast but coming out on top after a crash.
And that's why car drivers have more *******s among them than any other group of road users. They don't develop the same feeling of awareness. Sure they don't want to get into trouble because they hurt somebody, but it's not the same as if you really have to look after your own hide.
Just watch them when they are driving between a shitload of trucks, all of a sudden they get all considerate

My massive ego and Power Ranger suit will protect me! I was being a tad sarcastic, but you can use a dominant road position, take advantage of hesitation and the lightening quick response a bike has to 'steer' car drivers.

Car drivers don't even have to think about what they are doing for long periods of time....they simply follow another car and make sure they stop when it stops. A biker on a twisty A road on the other hand is totally alert, thinking about corner entry/exits, lining up the next overtake, looking for hazards, scanning the road surface while looking into the distance, thinking about his body and bike position. I'm also checking out the car drivers, looking at where there wheels are pointing, getting eye contact with them in their mirrors and thinking about what each of them will do next. See, IÆm a bloody superman!

You aint nothing my friend ........
I was a London based motorcycle courier for 8 years ... I taught Rossi how to ride
Whenever a car blocks your way "oh sorry m8 was that your wing mirror that went flying .. shame, expensive was it?" Cyclists jumping in your way? Thats what legs are for .. "oh sorry m8, did my leg catch and cause you to hit that lampost/pedestrian/car? .. shame" True story: Bike: Yamaha 900, 2 Paniers, 1 box tied to seat, art-bag over shoulder. I was in Hyde park making my way to Hyde Park Corner. As I was banking through the bend (Park Land end) a loverly litte Ferrari came inside me and actually hit my helmet during the corner. He stopped at the Queen Mothers Gate (he had no choice, lights and traffic etc). I tapped politely on his window and explained that his father was of unknown origin and his mother was a female canine. For some unknown reason he took offense and began to get quite rude. I looked at him offended, grabbed hold of his wing mirror and prised it away from the car. Again, for some unknown reason, this gentleman took offense and grabbed at my art-bag, where-upon, I stepped off the bike to the right letting it fall onto his door. He, bless him, tried to punch out at me from the comfort of his seat (being unable to open the door) and I returned the favour with a few miss-aimed punches of my own. At this point, one of his passengers came around the front of the car and posed in a pugalistic fashion saying such time honoured phrases such as "you're fuking dead m8" and the time honoured "you're going down". One lucky punch later (well, not so lucky really, after-all I was a bouncer in London for 4 years, Ministry of Sound after the re-opening, The Wem Club, Hippodrome and a few others) and he fell to the ground with some red sticky stuff coming from his mouth area and little blue birds flying around his head. The other passenger ran off at this point. The driver of the car got on his phone, calling Mr. Plod. I swear that within 2 minutes I had vans, cars, motorcyclists and armed gentlemen of the Mr. Plod variety surrounding me from all points. Unfortunately for me, the people I had chosen to tussle with were 1) an M.P. and member of the cabinet in John Majors Government (driver), a plain clothed policeman (pugalistic poser) and another M.P. (the runner awayer). I was carted off at her Majestys Pleasure to West End Central Station (Saville Row) where I was left to ponder the course of my actions for the next few hours in a lonely cell charged with GBH, affray and criminal damage. A phone call later to my solicitor and a request for the CCTV footage from atop the Hotels on Park Lane to back my statement(security ones owned by the Police) and I was released. 2 weeks later I got a phone call from my solicitor telling me that no action was to be taken. Would I mind paying the 30k damage costs for the Ferrari? Would no be a sufficient answer I replied? I never did back from them ... cant think why?

Last time I checked, Four wheels, loud engines and peel-outs get more tail than wheelies can!
Why's that? Because the girls can actually ride in a car, though I suppose you could give em a couple of frying pans and a rope and pull them along behind your crotch-rocket. :3
I digress, would you be happy with all the "ignorant drivers" behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler on a narrow road, when all thats between you and those big ol, thundering wheels is a small pocket of air and your lycra?
In those instances, common sense and self preservation come into it. Since all of you pro-cyclists seem to know what bastards drivers are, why do you risk sharing the road with them when legal offroad cycle paths are available? (At least in the instance i'm bringing up).

Car driver are the most Arrogent gits going. When I was in the King's Troop RHA! The Bombardier or Sargent who riding at the back make sure we were ok from the back. Now about 100 horses on the road and when we go on the road like Swiss Cottage with mulit lanes. Cars ignore the people to keep clear. I had a horse I was leading got touched by a car who WAS trying to push though! His nice BMW got smashed to hell! about 7 horses that was troting booted the hell out of it. With the little hand from us to make it soo. There are no reason for any car driver say horses/Bikers of any kind to say there not entitled to use the road. That alone just shows how arrogant they are. All I can say Driver stfu and deal with it!

Wanna explain how Mr. Ferrari knocked your helmet?
Regardless, even if he did. I doubt he intentionally tried to take your head off. But you intentionally ripped off his wing mirror and spent the night in jail because you had to absolutely prove the point that.. in the grand scheme of things;
You were a bigger **** than Mr. Ferrari who somehow managed contact with his envy-generating sports car. Infact you had to reinforce your point so much as to knock someone out over it and get a criminal record.
Congratulations. You further perpetuate the fact that motorcyclists have a rod up their ass. You choose to ride two wheeled machines, and if you're going to take corners so low and fast as to get your knee out (the only way I can imagine you got your head low enough to get it hit by a low slung ferrari), then I can only assume that you are not riding in the correct manner for UK roads.

1) I feel no envy about a Ferrari believe me. That I leave to muppets like you .. however, had it been an Aston Martin I probely would have congratulated him on his car, his driving skills and asked for sex. 2) You obviously didnt read the 'massive text wall' did you? I didnt get a criminal record for it, I didnt spend the night and I only hit the people who tried to hit me. Thats why the cctv coverage was requested. It would have proved my statement of events true. The officer should have made himself known, he didnt. The driver shouldnt have pulled my art-bag causing the bike to be let fall on his car but he did, the driver shouldnt have been racing through the park but he did. I always expect the worst and have been proven correct on several occasions, the last resulting in a metal rod in my left leg and the removal of a collar-bone. Of course I was plainly guilty in that accident too, after-all I made that van drive through a red light at speed t-boning me into the on-coming traffic on the other side of the road .. me and my riding heh?

For a humor story I remember one time when I was like 14 or 15 I was riding my bicycle to my dad's work when a lady came out and hit me. I can't blame her though as she had no way of seeing me due to some 8 ft tall hedges.
In any case she completely T-boned the bike and I simply jumped off and kept on running without skipping a beat. We threw the now scrap heap into the truck and my dad drove me to my mothers because we had to go to the airport to greet my grandfather. We show up just in time to see the airplane being taxi'd to the dock and in excitement I yell look theres grandpa and promptly ram my head into the large glass pane.
That wasn't one of my better days.

The guy grabbed him at the lights and tried to get my mates keys. They struggled for a while until the car driver decided it was the other motorcyclist opposite him. The guy pointed at him and shouted 'it was you' and attacked the other biker. My mate quickly sped off when the lights turned leaving the two guys fighting.

**** me some idiots about.
cyclist in the uk can only uses road or cycle lanes, so OP nice one on breaking the law.
horses: fields are owned by farmers who usually have shoot guns and also make there money from them so dont take to 1 tonne beasts churning them up. and when there in the road respect them coz your car no matter if its a ú50 Nissan blue bird or a god dam veron will get ****ed up if the horse flips and uses its 1 tonne mass to put its metal shoed leg through your car, so not really worth getting squashed for having to wait a bit is it really.
as for motor bikes yes some ride like **** but they are all usually far better trained then car drivers and more aware of the road and dangers.
with the Ferrari story yes total over reaction but last time i checked under taking is illegal and undertaking a speeding bike will also break many other road rules so the car driver was a total twonk.
i had this the other day.
duel carriageway that runs along a school so the first lane is always a car park so the traffic flows along the center over the center wight line in a single file. so the traffic dose 5mph leaving the outer 1/2 of a lane clear which i can fully take advantage off and usually travel past everyone. some fool decides this is just terrible and basically tried to run me off the road pulling out at 45o from the traffic flow to cut me up and stop my progress. thankfully i say this and quickened my pace and cleared his car before his stupidity coursed an issue, bearing in mind i dont fly past the traffic at high speed and am doing less than the limit on the road when when i rushed to keep my self safe.
the driver forgets that if a bike stays in the file it takes up as much room as a car holds the que up and increases the time for everyone behind
and also that had he knocked me off in that situation i would have been fully able to walk up to his basically trapped and slow moving car and smash the complete side of it and when the driver exits to object that my boots and steal reinforced and my gloves have carbon fiber reinforced knuckles so i would have mad sort work of him too.
so all in all its car drivers that are the worse skilled on the roads who basically zombie there way across the city's in sleep mode taking no interest in anything than the car in front so they can play follow the leader and not have to switch on there brains

Or did they end up paying you ú30k to keep the story from the pages of the News of the World?
if you read it and assuming its true all he did was remove a wing mirror which is not an accident its vandalism and had only recently been included by insurers.
the bike hitting the car was coursed by the driver pulling the bike in to it, yes a technicality but hay insurance works on them.
and he may be an idiot but you forget the original indecent which is that the Ferrari undertook at excess of the speed limit and hit another road user without reporting an accidental or exchanging insurance details.
which is 4 separate offenses so if it was a high qualified driver as all government related drivers would have to be then yes its quite probable that with a good lawyer that it was drooped and i would bet that non disclosure would be part of the agreement for such cases as both parties would be liable for rather serious offenses if it were to come out.
this is all possible if its true will we ever know no its the internet, one would hope that people can level there epeening to coad. as a biker the basic idea and result of the post are very true to often drivers take silly risks when they see bikes beating them through city and traffic.

Read it again ... I was arrested on the spot and carted away. No details were exchanged. I didnt even get to know the name of the driver, it wasnt told to me at any time. If the arresting officer hadnt have told me about the minister and the copper I wouldnt have known any better. Why did he tell me? I guess i'll never know.
Quote: Or did they end up paying you ú30k to keep the story from the pages of the News of the World?
They didnt pay me ú30k at all, I wish they had. As for the papers .. well thats another story. The MP that did the runner was a certain Neil Hamilton, you might have heard of him. I worked for Arrow Express (based by Liverpool St Station) and the sub-controller was friends with someone from Private Eye. We contacted him and told him the story. Nothing can be printed without proof, as we were told, for libel reasons. If I dont know the drivers name, if i'm not formally charged and no evidence is put forward (the video footage, witness statements etc) they cannot print. The same would apply to any daily or weekly paper. Just because I say it happened, a raise of denial by him or the police etc would mean no proof and libel has been made.
It doesnt really matter to me if you believe me or not. I was there, I give you the account to the best of my ability (and I thought quite witterly) the rest is up to you .. However, if any of you young pups remember the story in The Sun about Harrods telling someone that werent posh enough to buy a diamond engagement ring from them, that was me and the sub-controller too. Look it up on The Suns archives. It got TV coverage as well. Now, tbh, i'm really proud of that one I can tell you

People are jerks. Being in a car just allows them to express this with less consequences than normal.
I got hit, I don't remember much of it. I used to have a motorcycle, a nice little red Honda 125cc. I was out and about, and was coming up to the crest of a hill when I see two cars side by side right in front of me coming towards me. Guess I didn't miss one of them.
Much later, I get picked up by ambulance, after a truck driver had come across my wreck, and me still lying in the road. Thing was, i'd been hit some time after the first impact, which is why I lost my hand. I'd have been reasonably OK if it hadn't been for that.
So that was 3 vehicles, 2 in the original, 1 later, that did not stop at the scene of an accident. Jerks. |

Which is exactly what this cyclist was doing when they should have been on the afforementioned cyclepath available to them. You especially don't hold up traffic when everyone is driving home! ASKING FOR TROUBLE.

Oh my, yet another testosterone fuelled motorcyclist. It seems all you do is smash peoples cars when you have an accident. You know, when I was cycling on the road in one very rare instance, i got blind sided by a truck at around 25mph and thrown across the road.
I got up, i was fine, Bike was fine. I shook hands with the dude that hit me and said "I'm fine, dont worry about it." I suppose I could have got my huge dinosaur bone and beaten his head with it for accidentally hitting me but you know, I'd consider myself past that.

And all motorcyclists are clones of Valentino Rossi who instantly start riding on the road like its a race track. (Case point - annoing who takes corners so fast and low that he shoves his head into sports cars.)
Ya know, if you position yourself properly in the near-middle of the road on your motorcycle, do the speed limit and basically avoid narrow overtaking you'd probably be fine. But hey, everythings like the Brands Hatch for you guys, and you're all professionals too.
Then you accidentally get glanced by a driver because you were using narrow spots and you start waving metal poles and chains around because it sure as hell wasn't your fault was it! It never is the motorcyclists fault, who can do 0-60 in 3 seconds on something with a total of 8" square of rubber on the road at any one time.
Btw, my post was about BICYCLES who refuse to get in their proper place (cyclepath, cyclelane), whoever derailed this shit into motorcycles is a bastard.
Oh, and I used to have a motorcycle for 3 years, now I ride a bicycle to work every day but i occasionally drive, So i've had experience in all areas, and i sure as hell didn't have as much issues as you lot appear to.

A half decent sport bike rider can achieve 'kneedown' within speed limits, they and the tyres they run on are designed to lean over to move the bikes centre of gravity and assist with cornering.

The most important thing with positioning is to ensure you have the best view of the road. If you are in the UK, coming up to a right hand bend, you do not want to be anywhere near the centre of the road you need to be as far to the left as possible to give the best view. If you turn in to early and youÆre in the centre you (or maybe just your head, think about it leaning) will end up on the wrong side of the road. Bikes are slim, narrow overtakes on straights are fine.

I can't condone the violence thing, never happened to me really, weapons on a bike are dumber than dumb as they will do you damage in an accident. We don't have a huge contact patch with the road, but we tend to run softer compounds at higher temperatures than cars, combine that with the light weight and we have a surprising amount of grip. Try and lock-up a sportsbikes front wheel, in the dry when the bike is level and everything is up warmed up, you'll more likely flip it.

Well, by the sounds of it... Knowing how to ride a bike gets me in more trouble than NOT knowing how to ride one. I wouldn't want to know either. Why? because otherwise i'd probably be whining like the rest of you that car drivers are ****s and are all individually out to purposely dismount me and turn me into a ball of fleshy road-rash.
That and I sure as hell wouldn't like to try and get a knee down on a motocross bike, which is all I ever used to ride. They were shit on the road, you couldnt corner without shifting your weight in the opposite direction of the turn... but they were a damn sight tougher than a sports bike, and imo... look a lot better as well. But hey, I enjoy dirt more than tarmac.
Once again, I'm moaning about people going about their business?... they're riding in a busy road that is a common freight route, the council laid down a dedicated off-road cycle path for these ****ers and they still ride on the damned road.
If cyclists have suicidal tendancies that involve being wrapped around the propshaft of a truck then thats great, but do it somewhere else where you DONT hold up several miles of highway traffic.

I dont know if this statement is because you're incredibly fuking stupid or just incredibly fuking ignorant, or both maybe, its definately one or the other though thats for sure. You claim to have had a bike for 3 years... toy bike maybe but not a real one if your going to make ignorant comments like you have throughout this post. IF you had riden a bike, you should know damn well that if you take a left bend I would have to move out towards the right of the lane ( towards the the white dividing line) to cut through the apex of the corner. That would be whether I was doing 30 or 130, its the correct manner to ride. So there I am, taking a left hand bend, about to take the line through the apex at 60ish. I am undertaken by a speeding car that has to make that bend to. It doesnt matter that I was knee dropping, it doesnt matter the speed at which I was going. None of that excuses the car for undertaking at a speed higher than mine. It was lucky that I wasnt wiped out completey tbh.. and you think that this shows ME as a testosterone fueled motorbiker with a penchant for copying Rossi. Just fuking stupid is what YOU are. A British road lane is roughly and on average 8'ish wide. If it had been me trying to overtake (or undertake) him on that bend, you might have a case in point. But you dont, and your argument is full of fail because of your fuking stupidity.
You should be quiet now, keep your ignorance to yourself and dont insult us anymore.

Not only do you provide me with a text wall, but an obscene amount of misspelled profanities to avoid the language filter. Thats nice, and i'm ignorant?
Look, This thread was never about motorcycles to begin with, so not only did you de-rail my thread, you also come in here shouting and spitting about how amazing you are on motorcycles and how you proudly damaged a car in apparent defence.
Anyway, I still have a hard time imagining how the tallest part of your body hit a car that generally only stands about 45 inches tall. But you apparently did so there that is.
Safe to say, if you're going to swear and yell in my thread that had nothing to do with motorcycles, then what do you expect?
And at risk of being moderated, You say you were "lucky" that you didn't get wiped out? I'd say it was a damn shame.

Hmm. Maybe I do believe you got hit in the face with an Italian sports car.
After all, it seems that the injury has effected your coherance.
You're acting like a 15 year old kid all jacked up on Mountain Dew. Yet after reading your various posts, the situations you put yourself in would make me assume you're in your mid 20's, maybe early 30's.
Alas, my mind is at conflict... can such immature language and manner be coming from someone that should be acting in a mature attitude in compliance with their age?
Oh damn. My complete lack of knowledge about bikes? Who said I really had any? Was it not obvious? For those 3 years I had a bike, I rode a motorcross bike. Not some japanese crotch rocket. Get a clue, I don't really care if I have any knowledge about bikes or not, What i care about is why you're posting in a thread that isn't about motorbikes at all?

While I can agree with the ops point, I will have to throw an alternate situation out there for consideration.
I used to cycle everyday to work and back. Rarely did I have an accident. Any I did in fact have were due to my own stupidity and luckily in the local woods or so.
My home town at that time was Tamworth, Staffordshire. Look it up. Great area for cycling generally, except for one thing. The amount of bloody chavs that were around at the time (10 years ago now) was insane. My basic point is this; yes there were cyclepaths, yes there was enough room to move etc, all at a decent speed. But then, what does all that speed help me when the cyclepath is covered in glass due to the kids getting tanked up on "White Lightning" then dropping/smashing the bottles across the way.
Point is that it would be simply impossible to cycle without buying new tyres every 2-5 days. They were shredded. SO my option was to use the road. Albeit with proper regard to other road users, i.e. making space in laybys when possible, using cyclepaths if no glass present, using correct hand signals for the other traffic to see what you are doing at any given moment, keeping an eye out for the users and generally driving (riding) as safely as possible on the roads.
Most of the time I had lights when it was dark (sometimes not due to dead batteries, but this was a rare occasion) and wearing very colourful clothing to increase my visibility.
Do you (would you) still have a problem if that were the case?

my comments were in general about bikes, any one can see the person you were on about should have used said cyclist lane but your post read very anti cyclists on the road full stop so i was replying to the general reading of the post.
as for all bikers being race repliers hardly.
yes i have a sports bike its a Honda CBR 600F which is actually far from full sports are very good at cursing and commuting unlike the harder versions such as the RR and its rivals.
i havent been past triple figers on it, though i have many in cars
and yes i "would" have killed the fool, read in the post the indecent was avoided by me acting, thats would be avoiding a conflict!
but you will also read the car i was on about had no were to go and just decided to cut me up to stop my progress he could not over take move up or make any progress at all.
so basically he had decided to uses his car as a weapon to stop me had he hit me id have considered that premeditated and just sort of attempted murder so yes i would have ****ed the fool up im sure anyone would that just get basically attacked, there was no accident in his actions |

everyone does stupid things.
I was indicating to turn left at some traffic lights. A Bicyclist zipping down the inside while traffic was stationary shot up my inside as I started to turn (light had changed) and I nearly wiped them out. They started to shout at me (probably mainly shock of nearly being wiped out) and I pointed out I was indicating and zipping up the inside wasn't a great plan. They carried on shouting at me so I drove off (no one was hurt).
Ironically years earlier on the Euston road I did the same thing to a van. I was cycling along bunny jumping Camdens sorry attempts at road repair didn't see the lights changing ahead of me and got slammed into the railings very firmly by the side of a van. Bruising took days to turn up and weeks to go away and I was too shocked to shout at the van driver.
The 'problem' is humans do stupid things and some people are very inconsiderate. It really shouldn't be an 'us' and 'them' about cyclists, pedestrians, car drivers and couriers. It's stupid & inconsiderate vs. considerate and careful? |
