This means you cyclists!
Get out of the road!
Now I may sound like an angry car driver, in fact I am. In the UK we do like to have our space on the roads and this is generally proven by the mass distaste for cyclists. We also assign little lanes and things for cyclists so they don't die too much.
Before I continue, I cycle to work 90% of the time, when I'm starting early, I need to drive in. But yeah, I cycle. But i stick to the pavements because I'm too lazy to go fast and I dont wanna hold up traffic with my slowness.
Alas when I drive home I drive through the city. The roads are cramped because, in the UK, we restrict roads width and stick islands along them to make people limit speed.
So I'm driving at 30 on this busy main road from Portsmouth to Portchester, and theres some woman on a bike. Shes quite serious about her cycling because shes got all the lycras on. Shes going for it.
Shes cycling on the road, okay fine. I slow up behind her, i'm just letting my car crawl along in drive. She's pedalling like a maniac trying to go fast enough to keep up speed.
She won't move. Normally I wouldnt expect her to, but I look to her left...
On the sidewalk is a BRIGHT FRICKIN' RED dedicated lane for cyclists, off the road so they don't get mashed into the kerb. Why isn't she there!
She should be riding on her dedicated cycle lane if its available, not holding up traffic in the road. This instantly makes me a bit angry so I lean on the horn a bit. (I do love my horn.)
She stops in the road and looks around, I drive a LHD car (Yay american) so shes' massively confused, she's looking for a driver and there isnt one. As soon as she spots me on the left she starts giving it biggun's.. I point to this little cycle lane and storm off with the V8 scream of rage.
If the council go through the trouble of laying down a nice, smooth dedicated off-road lane for cyclists to use on this stretch of road, I don't expect to see cyclists ON THE ROAD, come on. That narrow road is home to not only cars, but massive articulated trucks... Deathwish much?
The last thing I want is chunks of lycra-clad flesh stuck to my radials.

Edited by: Benco97 on 08/10/2008 10:44:27 I have a very similar annoyance actually, Horses. EVERYWHERE. They ride slowly on down the road and laugh and wave at everyone from their horse and I just think to myself "WE ARE SURROUNDED BY MILES AND MILES AND MILES OF FIELDS YET YOU INSIST ON USING THE ROADS! WHHHHYYYYYYYY?!" It very much annoys me because there are so many horse riders in my area and you never see them galloping through fields, just slowly ambling along the main roads.#
Edit- and you can't beep and shout at them for fear of the horse going psycho and kicking the windscreen into your face or throwing the rider. Really annoys me..

I predict further frustration with cyclists the longer the automobile industry is dominated by oil/gas using vehicles.
I know what you mean, and the worst part about cyclists in the US is many times they think that they have the right of way when in all actuality they are supposed to follow the same traffic rules. For instance, like yielding the path if you are unable to keep up the pace. Some places have dedicated lanes and they typically are used when available.
The main issue in the States is that the infrastructure in the US was built around the concept of cars not foot and buggy like much of the old world. So I can see how this would be a big problem in Europe. I cringe when I see cars pass each other on roads in movies that are filmed in Europe muc less having a bike on the side of the road to top it off

Maybe the UK needs to borrow a concept or 2 about cycling from the netherlands? Most major roads have designated cycling paths running alongside them, or atleast a section of the road indicated as a cycling lane, that way neither motorists or cyclists get in each others way and you both get where you are going.

We do have that, thats what I'm talking about. As i said, there was a specific cycling lane on the sidewalk and this woman was on the freakin' road!
Also, about the traffic in Manila there, well.. Those people just don't realise how much a car hurts if it hits you eh.

Bikes shouldnt be allowed on the road as they are NOT taxed. We pay car tax, road tax, vehicle registration tax etc etc. Bikes pay for fuk all, cause accidents, they become accidents and generally ignore the rules of the road too. Look at it this way .... see a cyclist, see that target symbol painted on their backs? Ready .. aim ... fire!!
As for horses, the law that protects horses and their riders (they have right of way etc) goes back to the time motorised vehicles first made an appreance. As no one could believe that cars would EVER become a serious mode of transport laws were enacted to make sure that horses got rights over cars on the roads of the UK. Personally, whenever I see a horse I think of it as a Sandwich American, as the Belgians call it. Horse meat tartar with herbs, a light vinegerette in a crusty bagette. Yum yum!

This tbh.
Part of the reason I ride my bike on the sidewalk. I don't consider a bicycle to be a motorised vehicle, its not taxed, therefore it shouldn't be on the road. If anything its just a pedestrian on wheels.
Part that annoys me is that cyclists get all ****y at you when you give them a bit of horn, I paid my taxes to use my horn damnit.

In New Zealand, they have stopped putting 'Cycle Lanes' as part of the foot paths because the pedestrians complained the cyclist went too fast and caused accidents.
A number of cities had started putting cycle lanes on the road, which was really good until people started to use them to park their cars in.
I cycle to work here at CCP every day (except during the middle of winter) and the issue is if you ride on the road, the cars hate you, ride on the foot paths and the pedestrians complain ... you can't win.

Edited by: Heather Drauls on 08/10/2008 13:30:22 Let's face it, it doesn't really matter if it's a pedestrian, cyclist, horse or other car driver. If they're being inconsiderate they're a pain in the ass.
Then again drivers like everyone else can be idiots. My dad was trying to cycle home from the pub once. Very drunk (should have walked but there we go). Fell off the bike in the road and rather than anyone help him, more the bike, drag him off the road, they just drove up onto the pavement and went round him. This was on Heath Street at the top of Hampstead and if any of you know it.. it's not exactly wide.
As far as taxes go, the land those roads are on belong to all of us so unless there's a law/by law that says you shouldn't be on it (dual carriage ways, motorways etc.) it's down to who got there first.
I don't like having to over take horses though as I have a V8 too and horses aren't fond of the noise it makes. Kinda just accelerate a little bit, slap it in neutral and glide silently by....

Calm yourself with the thought that beligerant cyclists usually end up picking a fight they can't win and end up in a wheel chair. Which is fine by them as they still hold the moral high ground. So everyone is happy.

When your lane is on the sidewalk, you have no excuse. And if I was being an ass, I'd consider it your lane when you start handing over some road tax for it.
Regardless, I personally never park my car in the cycle lane as - A. its illegal and B. Cycle lanes are on main roads and I value the condition of my fenders.
And perhaps C. The opportunity has never arisen.

Here in the US, at least where I live (and then depending on the township) there are a set of rules for bike riders, most of it is common sence Go against traffic, announce where your coming from if passing a padestrian "On your left, on your right, etc." Dont be a douch and bike in a well used road, etc. Of course biking is more of a rec sport here then an actual means of transportation, but still. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

The cycle paths are often littered with crap and glass and generally the upkeep is pretty poor in my experience. Pedestrians wander in and out, and my local council has helped things along by making some roads configured ...
<PAVEMENT><CYCLE LANE><BUS STOP><ROAD>
Therefore forcing people to leave the bus then wander across a cycle lane onto the pavement.
I'd rather cycle in the road too, and she was doing the right thing by the sounds of it.
Whenever cyclists cycle meekly in the gutter, people take the opportunity to barge through dangerously. If I'm cycling and think there isn't a big enough gap I make sure there isn't a big enough gap. I take the decision out of the hands of the driver.
Bide your time and go around her when you get a moment. It's no big deal. I assume she doesn't stalk you and sit in front of you whenever you drive anywhere.

Heh interesting how things can differ, for me my bike is actually THE ONLY mode of transportation apart from public transit on longer distances. Now this is mostly because a driver's licence in these parts (Netherlands) is ****ing expensive on a student's budget, let alone a car. But another reason is that it is practical.
As a bit of counterweight to the chaps trying to beat each other on having the car causing the most decisive and major injuries to a biker - the thing that bothers me most of all about city traffic is the dumb inbreeds that insist on taking their car around the bloody CITY. The top speed attainable by such a vehicle in such territory is about 30km/h, with all the stopping and going inbetween the damn things are hopelessly in the way. And since nobody seems to be aware of an otherwise slow bicycle it is also customary to ignore a bike's movements altogether, where in the Netherlands there are clear-cut rules about not cutting off and hitting cyclists with your very big car.
On the other hand there are the cyclists themselves who (due to some past overprotective courses of action on the government part) think they can get away with pretty much everything, leading to half the stopping and going on the cars' part. Who'd fine a cyclist? right? 'inbreeds' comes to mind again.
Oh and the tax argument? That will prolly differ by country, but out here car taxation doesn't even come near the finances needed to keep everyone rolling on asphalt, so in the end - most does come out of the 50% they take of everyone's income, including those on a bicycle.
In the end it would all be so much nicer in the street with some consideration, common sense, and most of all looking more than 10 meters in front (and behind you once or twice) of you while operating anything with wheels.
