Each to their own I suppose, but given the way EVE combat is, a 24/7 free-for-all seems anything but an interesting concept. In an FPS like UT or BF2 for example you can at least make a difference with personal skill, but in an EVE fight working solo against multiple targets? Not really, beyond knowing the basics of the game. It's my main gripe with PVP in every MMO I've played. Random number generators, gear/fittings, class/ship type all end up mattering more than skill (again, as long as you're not completely clueless) when locked down in a fight. After all EVE indeed is rock/paper/scissors, and you don't need that much skill for that either. Same goes for most MMOs. It's very, VERY annoying.
So because of that team-based stuff is the only way to have any really sensible PVP in MMOs, and that's why every-man-for-himself brawls hold little appeal to me.
You can be the best EVE pilot and PVPer ever, but your T1 cruiser will still die to three enemy T1 cruisers half your skill unless they're afk, totally new or unfitted.
You can be the best WoW PVPer ever, but your lvl 70 warlock will still die to three other reasonably gearead lvl 70 warlocks of half your skill unless they're afk.
In the meanwhile you can be the best Battlefield 2 player ever and win solo against three other good players with the same kit or even a less suitable kit just because skill is the primary factor above all other considerations.
You can disagree of course, but so far my observation has held true for EVE, WAR, AoC and WoW. Single exceptions can happen in a rare fight, but it's just the RNG at work in the favor of the underdog in most of those cases or something overpowered (like a nanolamer vs 3 blaster boats, yay - though this is also part of the r/p/s element). I know for myself that I've killed whole squads alone in BF2 with just good use of terrain and timing. It's just not something that's really possible in MMOs, and that annoys me to no end.
Oh, and to get back to the original suggestion - fit a new ship each time eh? Have fun spending 90% of your time fitting a ship even while knowing that whatever you fit you'll die horribly and won't have any noticeable effect on the fighting going on outside.
