why do you play this game, what is your intention behind this ? Do you like to get better than others in something ? Are you trying to find friends in an online community ? Are you looking for power over others ? Or do you simply like to inflict harm to others and see them suffer ? What exactly drives you to play a computer game instead of working on you real life ?

First: I work in real life! I have a full time job, and do not live in my mothers basement. Just to have that part outa the way!
Secondly: The reason why I play this game are many many many. But Spaceships, hardcore, sandbox and Nyx Mothership!! is just a few good reasons!!

I don't know it, i just try to understand but it makes no sense, we are sitting like zombies in front of a flat screen for hours. And soon we are all going to die anyways, so why waste the precious short time that we have left here on planet earth in a physical body with something that is not real, this just does not make sense somehow.

It¦s called escapism, and it generally means you prefer to ¦zone out¦of reality for a while.
On the other hand, do it long enough and you introduce connections to your ¦reality¦ into the escapist experience. (out of game social contact is an example). Interesting thing isn¦t it, it¦s typical for the very involving escapist experience.

What else would you do?
There's simply too much time on our hands, sometimes you want to zone out and mine.
Would you zone out while admiring some trees? Some overhyped dirt-particles? Would you listen to an 80 year old granny blabber about how she was "in the war!", before she croaks and you yourself become that "granny" and start babbling how your granny was "in the war!"? Would you sit in a pub drinking, trying to pick up chicks? Spend time with your kids, who by any default, don't want to spend time with a square parent when they could fly pixels? Annoy the hell out of your girlfriend 'cause you want more quality time? Annoying her to the point of break-up and then return to EVE 'cause, ironic as it is, you now have too much quality time with yourself.
Everything is a waste of time, and let me end this very profound post with a quote from The Big Yin;
"Life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life, get wasted all the time, and you'll have the time of your life."

NEWS FLASH: EVE IS DYING AND SO ARE WE!
You play this game because it brings you joy. It helps you use the technique of "escapism" to not think of the troubles and such of your present life...either that or you just don't have anything better to do.
Why do we fall in love? Because it brings us joy (and babies) Why do we ( Most of us anyways) work for a living? Because receiving money for your work helps you buy things that bring you joy. Why do you buy and play games? Because it brings ou joy. Why do you go out and drink yourself (well alot of us anyways) into half a come sometimes? Because it brings you some joy and alot of trouble afterwards.

why do you play this game, what is your intention behind this ?
For me, Eve-o is a recriational thing. A place to unwind after the day.
Do you like to get better than others in something ?
Of course, that's natural progession.
Are you trying to find friends in an online community ?
Not really, I have pals in Eve-o of course but I don't go out of my way to try and make friends in game.
Are you looking for power over others ?
Who's looking? Seriously, no.
Or do you simply like to inflict harm to others and see them suffer ?
You don't have to suffer, that's what ransom is for.
What exactly drives you to play a computer game instead of working on you real life ?

Consider if you were immersed in EVE (total sensory link) with toobs to keep you fed/watered/drained.
Consider if all players were in the same situation
Consider if all players had no memory pre-EVE
Would we not consider EVE to be real life and the dreams we have about a planet called earth at 12.00GMT+ to be just that - figments of our collective imagination?

My guess is that we can't work on our 'real life' the whole time we're awake, frankly, at times, I get bored with 'real life' that's when I want to relax a bit.
We play EVE online, others watch tv the whole night, is our choice worse? Not in my eyes, playing games at least requires you to use your brain, unlike the tv.
But really, it's none of these reasons you've listed, it's to have fun |

Have to agree with many that have said friendship first, but lets qualify that a bit more ....
I believe (and this is my opinion) that the character you are, you bring into the game. Hence you would find that Chribba IS a honest person in RL - and on the flip side, the infamous Ginger Magician is an a***hole. I cannot see how you can play this game as an alter-ego if it isn't a major part of your character.
So, within the game there are two distinct types of characters that occupy both ends of the scale - those that enjoy inflicting distress REGARDLESS of the consequence, and those that enjoy being preyed upon or victimised and you will find then both in Eve if you look hard enuf.(Some of them occupy Rancer) In the case of Victimism (if it ain't a word then I just created it). This is a state where you allow/enjoy/seek out instances where you can have pain inflicted on you with the intention of screaming out to those that will take NOTICE, of your pain and suffering. (You KNOW who you are)
Many players are as they are in RL - happy, morally aware, socially engaging - like to push the boundries a bit without suffering the consequences (and most times failing) and interacting cos if you REALLY analyse your reasons for being on-line it is to interact and share the experience - something you can't get from TV
In summary - you have decided to include this game into your time which means it is real - as your life is real.
I have met many really great, nice, funny, intelligent, driven people in Eve. I will meet alot more.
That is real

I don't know it, i just try to understand but it makes no sense, we are sitting like zombies in front of a flat screen for hours. And soon we are all going to die anyways, so why waste the precious short time that we have left here on planet earth in a physical body with something that is not real, this just does not make sense somehow.
The same reason people do anything in their spare time. Because they enjoy it. If they like, they do. Very simple. I'm not sure where you going with real/not real. Anything most people do for enjoyment is not 'real', if by real you mean accomplish. I for example enjoy mountain biking in trails. At the end of the day I didn't accomplish anything like I would in eve(say I just finished BS lvl 5 any race).
TL;DR -- People spend time doing things in their spare time because they enjoy it. If you have any further argument your failing to grasp this concept and will not understand.

I'm not a real person, I'm just a very advanced version of A.L.I.C.E. In fact, all of us are just different iterations of A.L.I.C.E. These are not real replies to your post. You're talking to computers... |

What exactly drives you to play a computer game instead of working on you real life ?
The only reason there could be, I do these things because I want to. |

Originally by: Leto Corleone Ok spaceships, but do you realize that you are sitting in a room on planet earth, in front of a computer screen and that there are no spaceships but only pixel pictures on that screen ?
1. Depends how good/bad your imagination is. 2. Depends on your motives for playing - Meeting and making online friends, chatting, having a laugh etc. 3. Escapism - Wishing for something more than the boring, mundane job you have in RL. 4. Born several centuries too early (Me - Anything futuristic has always attracted me, esp. space travel) 5. Entertainment - Something to waste some time doing that's enjoyable.
There are probably hundreds of reasons for playing Eve and a single player version would be a way to enable players to get practice without the tears, rants, whines and so on. It may also allow players to fly ships that they may never otherwise see in EO, Titans, moms, even dreads etc. After flying one of them, it may give them something to aim for in EO. These players may be those who sit in highsec all their lives and never set foot out of it. After flying a dread or mom in a single player version, it may even change their minds and make them determined to get a foothold in lowsec at least.
Even if it was a limited version with only missions, NPC rats and such but maybe a bit harder. Almost like EO with only 1 person playing and a simulated player market, maybe a percentage chance that your goods will sell based on price, location etc.
