I have Ubuntu v 8.04. I downloaded eve client and when accessing the client after downloading I get a grey screen with grey boxes. I can tell its the login agree to terms screen. After 10secs or less the screen disappears and i just see my normal OS desktop. I downloaded .deb for linux. When installing Ubuntu I did my updates and restarts relevant to the updates. All other functions of using Ubuntu work fine,,,unless there is a function I haven't used yet. Anyone wanna try out this puzzle?

Don't know much about Linux, so the only thing I can recommend is to try the Linux forum. I think they have threads discussing how to fix EVE on Ubuntu 8.04 there (not sure as I don't understand what they're sayin).

Yeah well $300 or so to buy Windows is hard to come by. And Linux does work for others,,,. though I'm new to Linux, if the OS works for some people then it should work for all. So what do others have installed that I don't. Since the Eve download for linux is available and hoping the software designers didn't waste their time,,,,,there is a fix. I have a fresh installed copy of Ubuntu,,,whats the next step? Feel free to post more comments suggestions,,,,, :)

I'm not really into linux myself, but I think giving some specs from your pc might give some more insight into your problem.
Also, have you installed your latest graphic drivers? _

Have you tried running Eve in WINE as well as the native linux client? Also what are the specs of your computer hardware in regards processor speed, internal RAM and graphics card?

All I can suggest is trying the native client if you have not done so. It can be found here

I'm not new to Linux and that's why I strongly suggest you to not run the so called EVE client for Linux. Even if it would work for you now, any new patch can break it. You may or may not experience random crashed under Linux where it would run fine under Windows but you wont get any lost ships back because the logs never show anything.
If you payed money to CCP for playing this game and don't got the option to get Windows ask you money back. Linux support for this game is a blunt marketing lie. --

Edited by: jcoutepascher on 12/10/2008 09:01:37 look in the linux cathegorie there is a tread named Linux & wine gives lots of insight as to how you can run it .
edit: also above post should solve your problem (your missing the fonts)
i personaly run 3 instance of eve without problems (tho i do need lower quality grafx)
note: there is noting wrong with using ubuntu vs windows ppl who says dont use linux, are just afraid of change & just never actualy gave linux a chance.

I'm using Linux since 1995. That's quite a big chance, isnt it?
When CCP announced they are doing a new GFX-Engine I had high hopes to get a proper native Linux client. Sadly they went the easy road and stay with DirectX. Like many other vendors they let the Wine ppl do their work. Wine is great and so is the job the Winelings done but it's still not the right thing to do. The Linux desktop has a completely different history. It starts with occupying the alt key (what is traditionally reserved for the window manager), goes on with bad file names (space is a file name seperator!) and goes on with loads of blocking calls.
You have pointed the OP to the linux section. See how long those threads are. If you read them you will see that ppl have the same problem over and over again. And worse, problems that where fixed show up a couple of patches later.
Wine is and was ment as a workaround for applications that can not be ported to Linux. CCP got the sources of EVE. There is no reason not to have a native Client both for Linux and Mac. They simply don't want to put money into this. Not surprising, given that there is a workaround and the small numbers of players that use Linux.
I have tried EVE on Linux and it's OK for changing skills and playing the market. If you undock you do so at your own risk. Recommending such a move may make believers happy. I don't believe is Linux, I just use it and therefore recommend to stay with Windows for playing EVE.

The first thing you need to understand is that there is no such thing as Unix.
One of the great things about the Unix Variants out there is that they can each be customized to the users content.
One of the horrible things bout the Unix Variants out there is - people by the thousands have done so.
Thus - if you are a professional Unix Programmer - Unix Variants are wonderful.
If you are not a professional Unix Programmer ... you are going to struggle a lot more than people who just take what Microsoft gives them and make the best of it.
Most Linux versions have a dual install option, so they will co-exist with Windows on the same system. If you aren't a Unix expert and want to play computer games on that system, dual booting is a much easier road.
Linux and the other Unix variants are for people who really, really want to be part of that environment. There are rewards for doing so as these operating systems allow the operator much more power than Windows but there is a very stiff price to be paid in the learning curve required.
When I was a Sys Admin I had to support a lot of operating systems, including a number of Unix variants. So I put in the time and learned enough to do my job. Now that I'm retired ... it's all just a lot easier to use Windows.
If you Enjoy the process of getting some application not native to your OS to work on it (and a lot of Unix Geeks do) then it's worth while. If you are looking to increase your knowledge of Linux by forcing yourself to do everything with it - then it's worth while. If all you want to do is play a computer game - pay the money and get Windows.

Ive read all the input so far, and its very much appreciated. I would like to learn more of linux, but not at the cost of depriving myself of using this game or other applications i would like to use. I recently reinstaled linux from scratch and though it didnt solve anything, im running a fresh copy. I can install wine and the windows version of this game, but where do i get the windows fonts from. Can someone drop in a website name. I tried downloads.com and just googled "windows fonts" but i got more info than i knew what to do with. I didnt want to download random software and hope i get something that works. since the wine thing worked kinnnda than name a website or url and i'll download what i need. Much of the linux world is new. its only because of the financial aspect that im have to use it now and not ease into the knowledge of linux. Its very much a culture shock.

As much as I hate to say it, you ARE missing the arial fonts in the above folder. There is a package in Ubuntu called MSfonts (or something like that) that will install the fonts and then you need to copy them to the above folder. (Do a search for "FONTS" in Synaptic Manager)
And irrespective of what the others say the Eve native client has always worked for me and every patch gets better and better, AND Eve Voice works (unlike in Wine!!)
Good Luck! Regards,

I would love to run the linux client nativily. If you can tell me what I should do,, from installing ubuntu,, to running this game,, I will not deviate. I'd rather do with wine,, but I'll use what i have to. Many people cant use linux while others can. My 2 year degree in computer electronics tells me that if it works for one,, (and since I have a fresh HD with a fresh ubuntu copy on it) than it should work for anyone. So after I run the updates after installing ubuntu 8.04 and making sure the graphics card is recognized and it meets the requiremnets of the game,, what else should I do? Ubuntu, is like,,,,going to a store in a foreign country. I have an idea where most things are,, but when they are called a different name and put somewhere else in a place Ive never been to,, I can only think of where it should be,, not where it is. So,, much of this is a bit new. But i hear "it works for me". I dont know why it is not workin on this machine,, when it meets all requirements and some. Anyone wanna throw in something i might be missing other than what Ive mentioned? I know the native linux for ubuntu works,, cause it has for others. This could so simple,, I did turn off the visual effects that unbuntu has on the desktop. Would that have relavance?

You don't stand a chance with Linux if you can't find the return key for a simple forum post.

No.
$ apt-get -y install wine msttfont $ winecfg # hit OK once $ cd "~/.wine/dosdevices/c:" $ mkdir tmp; cd tmp $ wget "http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVE_Premium_Setup_64451.exe" $ wine "EVE_Premium_Setup_64451.exe" # hit OK, next, whatnot $ cd "~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/Fonts" $ find /usr/share/fonts -iname 'arial*.ttf' -exec cp '{}' . ';' $ wine "~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe"
That stuff is brain compiled. I wont reinstall EVE for somebody who makes it hard for me to read his requests.

If, after moving the arial fonts to the Fonts map (Under Applications > Wine > Browse C:\ Drive > windows > Fonts), you still have problems with the client, try going to Configure Wine > Graphics, and disable the Pixel Shaders option. That solved loads for me, even though I use the Linux client.
For the Linux client, all you have to do is update your graphics drivers (I use the EnvyNG program for that, updates on full auto), and make sure you do not click on the Cancel button. Also, go to Uncle Dev's FPS tweaking Guide in the stickies of this here forum, and the guide to editing prefs.ini to boost performance.
Last but not least: check the dependencies in the Linux install guide to make sure you have all the required stuff for installing and running EVE.
Have fun!

Edited by: Seppin Latonei on 21/10/2008 09:40:29 Edited by: Seppin Latonei on 21/10/2008 09:39:12 Just a comment to add to GFLDex's instructions -- instead of copying by hand, you can also use winetricks (http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks):
# get prereqs if you don't have them apt-get install wget cabextract # get the script wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks # use it to install packages sh winetricks corefonts
Note that if you just run 'sh winetricks' without an argument, you'll get a GUI from which you can choose items to install. I think this way is easier, but there's no reason why GFLDex's method wouldn't work just fine.

Same problem here. Ubuntu 8.04 with ATI card. I can also get into the opening screen with the scroll box but it crashes just like the other posters here. I'm also new to Linux so I don't know exactly where everything is/goes to tinker with it.
