Hi, as per the title.
A few things about my char. I have just under 21mil SPs, with:
- 5mil in Gunnery (Large Turret 5, Large Arty Specialization 4, AWU 4)
- 2.3mil in Missiles (Cruise and Siege 4, (Cruise 7 days from lvl5))
- 1.2mil in Drones (Combat, Scout and Heavy 4, Sentry 3)
- Mechanic, Hull, Engineering and Electronics and other basic skills 5
- Battleship 5
ISK is a little limited, and although I could afford to buy, equip, and even lose a Maelstrom, I'd be more (financially) comfortable with a Typhoon. I also simply can't see how a Maelstrom is twice as good as a Typhoon (as the simplistic view of just looking at the prices would suggest).
I've been away from the game for a while, and before the break, I always flew in the Typhoon, and quite enjoyed it. I'm not sure the Maelstrom even existed back then.
I should also mention that I prefer long range combat style, rather than short range (hence no Large Autocannon Specialization).
Anyway, reading numerous threads on the subject, I can see the majority recommends the Maelstrom, and when the Typhoon is mentioned, it's always with a caveat that you need high skills to be able to use it properly.
So, do you think my skills are high enough to use the Typhoon and do it justice, or should I go the (easier) Maelstrom route?
Thanks!

With your artillery specialization you'll be better off with a Maelstrom, imho. Get some T2 small and medium drones for the fluffy stuff, a AB for distance and you'll be good.
The Typhoon is only good if you have either high skills in all of drones, turrets and launchers or you are not focused on one attack type. Also applying your DPS with the Typhoon isn't as immediate and focused as with the Maelstrom.

Edited by: Lili Lu on 11/10/2008 18:23:02 The thing about missions is it helps to have more than one battleship to do them with. Each battleship has strengths and weaknesses and to expect one to do all missions very well is not realistic (even a raven is not "the best" option for every mission, it just is a good option for most missions).
A Maelstrom and Typhoon complement each other quite well. The Mael's shield tanking lends itself to taking on Guristas and Angels. The Phoon's armor tanking and bonus em resist lends itself to taking on Blood and Sansha. Rogue drones, serps, mercs, eom are either or depending on your tastes and experimentation.
If you are going to start with one BS it looks like you have the skills to use the Phoon, and the Phoon is quite adaptable. It is also possible to fit 4 cruise launchers and 4 1200s on the phoon with some fitting mods in the lows (and/or rig). The Mael however will have an easier time tanking explosive and kinetic so I would get one as soon as you are able.

Thanks very much for the replies.
Thanks for the link FT, I've seen that thread, and whilst very relevant, it didn't answer my specific question (although I realise there can't be a definitive answer to that) of whether my skills look good enough to use the Typhoon well.
I think I will buy the Typhoon to start with, do a couple of missions very carefully, and if it works, those first few missions will then also help financially towards the purchase of the Maelstrom too.

This is the typhoon I've used for a long time running L4s by myself.
Typhoon
Having in mind I have 2 Maelstroms and just use the Typhoon for L4s, I think this is the best choice.

iv got about 26 mill sp and recently asked myself the same question you have asked here. i did what you are abut to do and tried the phoon first.
guess what
i now use a maelstrom....
phoon is good if you can use sentry drones. they beef up your dps a lot . its a ***** to fit a dual repper set up with 4 cruise launcers and 4 arty's. i was left dissapointed witht he results and speed of using this ship for lvl 4's
maelstrom fit your mids for max resists dont bother with an AB. 1 sensor bootser and xlbooster with cap booster. cap booster is for those 0'shit moments but its well worth fitting. lows you can go dmg ctrl II. 3xgyro II and tracking enhancers. i prefer to use the 1200mm arty II's x8 over the 1400mm as they hold more ammo and do only slightly less dps. ( better tracking too)
works for me m8. i wanted to love the phoon . and it made logical sense it just didnt work as well :( btw if you rig the mael i can recomend the rigs that reduce the cap usage of the booster very cheap and damn effective :)

If you need two reppers in L4s, you're doing it wrong.
You are correct though, Typhoon really needs T2 sentries to shine. And Navy Cruise. And T2 arties. While the mael is incapable of shining at all, but can do L4s with next to no investment into either SP or isk. Almost as bad as a cruise Raven. And if you are reading this, you have arrived at the signature without noticing...
