It's known among nurses that the days there's a full moon, the action at the labor room is bigger. A friend of mine who own a bar assures me that, when there's a full moon, his customers look more restless. And today we have a full moon, and man! the traffic's been horrible in my city all day... Do you believe a full moon can alter people's mood or is it a myth?

I very strongly believe that the phase of the moon can affect a person's mood and mental state.

Even though our mass is tiny and gravitational force is an inverse square law?

I didn't say the moon allowed us to float 3m off the ground every full moon. I just said that it effects us. __________________________________________________________

I doubt it. There just isn't enough force to have any physiological effect.

Oh I don't know. I gave somebody the full moon once on the freeway and it damn near made em wreck. I'd say that's some pretty powerful effects.

The effects of tidal forces aren't limited to water. Being made of 85% water has nothing to do with it.
I'm interested though - do these things also happen on full moons when the sky is cloudy and you can't see it?

Edited by: Dmian on 14/10/2008 20:21:05 Well, there seems to be some statistical correlation between crimes and full moon, but nothing that can really confirm it. Here you have two (contradicting) articles: Violence and the full moon Full Moon & Crime - Study Results ----

I strongly believe it can affect moods for these reasons :-
1. Anecdotal evidence from police officers i work with, who state there are more violent offences committed on full moons. 2. I believe (and have read) that Police forces in Brighton field more police on the streets when there is a full moon due to there being statistically more violence. 3. I have felt different myself during full moons. 4. The old fable of werewolves , men who turn into wolves on full moons, could well have been based on these observations generations ago.

Did anyone ever stop to think that the fact that theres more crime on a full moon as opposed to not, is that you can actually see what the fck your stealing? Given that nobody even hinted a the possibility of "sekrit brainwaves", I think you might want to edit. Wouldn't want to lose face now, would we?

The phases of the moon and human biologic effects are slightly corelated nowdays, but they used to be pretty strongly correlated in the past (back when "light on demand" at night was not really an option, or at least not a very feasable one).
The most reasonable explanation would be that the human "biological rythm" is linked to the brightness of night-time moonlight - hunters would usually get the best results in nights with a full moon, as then the advantage they had over wild animals was at its peak. Also, since food (from hunting and even fishing) would be more plentiful during full moon periods, and we all know that "love passes through the stomach" (heh), the fertility cycles got synchronized with the moon cycles too. I mean, come on, do you think it's a coincidence that the moon cycle has the same length as the normal human female menstrual cycle ? That would be just too much of a coincidence, IMHO.
So, yeah, hormone levels, agressivity and all of that TEND to be slightly more pronounced during full moon periods on average. But as time goes by, and we're less and less dependant on "natural light" during night-time, this gets less and less relevant.
Of course, it's just a theory, but then again... do you have a better one ?

I ussually black out when there is a full moon and ussually wake up somewhere strange, smelling of cheap alcholic beverages and a napkin with a lip stick kiss, a number and the name Ted on it. Does that count? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Alternatively, it could just be a mental thing. No need for gravitational forces, no need for deep seated biological drives. If a person thinks that they'll be affected by a full moon, then they will be pretty much by definition. And I know I always get the shivers (not in a bad way) when I see the full moon. ------

Full moon = more blood in your head, due to moon's gravity.
So ancient Arabs used to cut their neck slightly to release some blood, in order to release the tension, therefore reducing anger ...etc Or is it a Muslim rule? i really can't remember but my teacher told this to me when i was 12, could be wrong.

Shake your head a little, and you will notice why. High blood pressure in your head isn't as simple as having the same elsewhere. more blood down there makes it go up, your head wont erect, more like explode.
well it wont, but full moon has the effect of being upside down, only a lot lesser. we barely notice it most of the time.

Sorry guys, but this is complete bullshit. The moon is directly overhead EVERY DAY! When it's half moon, the moon is directly overhead at 6AM or 6PM. When it's full moon, it's overhead at midnight. There's no way that the moon being overhead at a particular time of day causes physiological effects due to gravity.

I used to know a girl who went sleep walking whenever there was a full moon. Whether it was psycho sematic or not is not known but she's done it ever since she was able to walk and at that young age, it's unlikely she knew the phases of the moon and when the next full moon came. Also, even if it was cloudy for days, she would always start sleep walking when the moon was full so she never actually saw it.

Quoted for the absolute hilarity of MD's quote.
EDIT: To stay on topic. Yes I believe that there are some effects. These effects also could vary depending on the sensitivity of the individual.
