Whenever I am locked onto by an enemy (or groups of enemies) my Windows XP with Service Pack 3 crashes. When windows ressurrects, it claims that the sound card is at fault. After disabling the soundcard, I do not run into this problem, but I would like to play the game with sound (so I know when I'm being attacked or when something has lock). I'm not willing to go out and buy a new soundcard just to play the game as I want to.
The sound "card" is actually an in-built module into the ABit F-I90HD motherboard and I have the drivers upgraded to the latest available.
For those of you who think it is a RAM issue, I have talked with your comrades and I have removed and put back in place all three RAM sticks.
I re-iterate that windows THINKS this is a sound-related issue, and all other evidence points to it.
What can I do?

Bascially, onboard sound is crap when it comes to gaming.
That said and if you don't wanna buy a separate soundcard, try looking in sound Properties somewhere and lowering Hardware acceleration slider, if one present.
(I never use onboard sound on rigs meant for playing games. Totally based on own experience after building around 10+ gaming pc's for myself and friends over the years)

Edited by: Illwill Bill on 16/10/2008 21:33:25 Modern on-board sound chips handle games just fine, and their noise levels are much lower than they used to be five years ago. Regardless of sound card performance, the system isn't supposed to crash when playing games, so something is clearly wrong. EDIT: The advice regarding HW acceleration is a useful one and I only disagree with your opinion on on-board sound chips.
Livol, could you provide some more information about the problem? In which way does the system crash? Is there any error messages? When did it crash for the first time, what happened before it started to crash? Did you install any updates for Windows, or did you patch EVE?

Did the crashes by any chance start when you unplugged the mic cable from your pc, but was working fine when it was inserted? ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

That's one thing I didn't account for, the obvious "OMG ONBOARD SUXXORZZZZZ". I'm telling you, it's worked fine for me and there is NO noise on the line.
I have disabled hardware acceleration in eve online altogether and this has fixed the problem.

Yeah this happend to me aswell. I for some reason had unplugged my mic and these crashes started to occur. I then somehoe got the idea to plug it back in and noticed how that somehow was the cause. Crazy stuff. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

I'm just flaming on onboard sound out of personal experience. That outweighs (for me anyway) everyone having no problems at all with this - I'm happy you don't have issues with this kind of sound harware.

My on-board Realtek chip also works perfectly fine. The only down-side is that the driver has to do all the mixing, using the CPU, but modern CPU's are powerful enough to manage anyway.
