Originally by: Winterblink I'm still totally at a loss to explain why it's taken this long for the official forums to get their own search function. Google sells search servers for a fairly reasonable amount, with the equipment costs CCP has I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a kick to the budget to add one in.
From extensive research on my calculator while daydreaming at work, i figured out at ú10 average from 10k players CCP gets 100k per month, 1.2mil per year, 2.4mil per 2 years etc, so no it wouldnt be a dent, they wouldnbt notice. |

Yea, the Google tip is cool... figured most people were aware of that feature... Here's another way to make it even easier (and better IMHO).
The Google Toolbar plug-in will add this same feature right to your browser and can also provide some other nice features such as highlighting your search text on resulting web pages. It also throws in a pop-up blocker for IE. I don't know about Opera, but here's the links for IE & Mozilla:
IE: http://toolbar.google.com/ Mozzila: http://googlebar.mozdev.org
Anyway... just another option for anyone interested...

A small Software Company (like where I work) with 15 employees needs ~1.5M € a year just to keep the company going. Now take CCP with their hardware/internet requirements and ask again if they can use money as toilettpaper...the initial cost to create an account is probably totally consumed by hardware investments and the monthly fee keeps the company going, but not that much more.

10k players lol? Eve has allmost 12k on at certain times, and considering that you arent going to have everyone playing at the same time i'd say its more like 30-50k.

Acctualy I have read that there is 54k paying accouts on EVE so should not be a problem to add a search funktion to the forum

Actually, can CCP website DEVs spare a little time to put in a form that takes in some text and then runs a search on the EVE forum from Google?

Would be very useful a "send an email" option when a reply is done... Almost every forum has that thing... Or am I missing it? Of course I totally agree: searching topics with Google is *bad* :)

I only found this thread when I was done writing my extremely simple page and Firefox plugin for searching the forums.
http://eve.grismar.net/google Forum search
The page works from the IGB, though that's mostly useless, since the forums don't show there.
The search engine plugin sports a nice EVE icon and searches the forum with Google, talking to Google in a friendly way.
Greetings, Grismar.

Edited by: Uther Doull on 18/03/2005 19:11:06 alternatively you could set up a quicksearch in Firefox
read about quicksearches and how to set them up here
just put http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Amyeve.eve-online.com+%s&btnG=Search in the location and for example eve as keyword
now all you have to do is type 'eve <keyword>' in the location bar and it will take you to the google search result of the myeve site

Another helpfull feature I just discovered in google is the 'intitle' option. For instance if you're looking for some information on a mission, lets say vengeance, you don't want links from all over the eve forum. By typing the following search query: vengeance intitle:Missions site:eve-online.com You get only hit in the Missions part of the eve forums: Result
Hopefully this will help you refine your searches a bit. (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help her on her way to world domination. |
