Is there any defense against these spheres? WHen I travel in 0.0 I seem to run into these a lot (and plenty of supporting cast! LOL.) Is there a counter measure for them? Or do I just need to speed out?

MWDing out of them or back to the gate is just about the only counter to them. Or destrying whatever is making them.

Cloaking, using a scout and warping in from an unusual angle (rather than just going gate to gate, go via a planet). Getting within 14AU of the gate and scanning the gate will alert you to the presence of bubbles, so you don't fly into them. Setting and using bookmarks at various places around the gate is also good.

Combining the above posts a bit;
When you jump into them you have 2 options, fight or flight. So either have the ships/numbers to attack what's on that gate or run away, which you either do by MWDing out in a FAST ship (think 4km+/s) or you cloak up and make it out of there. Mind you that the cloaking option doesn't really work on slow/big ships since it'll take a while to get to the edge of the bubble.
When warping towards a bubble you should use bookmarks or closeby celestials and you really should use a proper covert ops ship. If you use a route/gate regularly set up a BM at 150km+ from the gate at some odd angle, that means you can warp to the BM, have a look at what's going on and then decide what to do.
If you're trying to move solo through 0.0 space while not being blue to the locals you really don't want to move around in big/slow ships, you need to be either VERY fast or a proper cloaker.
