if the sun just vanished rather 'kaboom oops' then we'd freeze very fast, a few days tops. the weird things that live at deep ocean geothermal vents would prob be ok for a good long while tho, they don't need the sun at all, and the vents would keep the sea liquid. (in fact you'd prob get what scientists think may be occuring on Titan (I think)) the frozen surface over seas kept liquid by heat from the core. all kinds of weirdness could go on under that.

IIRC from my physics classes man moons ago, the shock wave/heat wave would travel at the speed of sound so it would be a fair amount of time after the explosion before that hit us. The main problem is that, by the time it did reach Earth, the Earth would no longer be here. A wave of gamma radiation would precede the blast and would be intense enough to vapourise everything in it's path and that does travel at the speed of light. In effect, we would never know the sun had exploded before our entire planet just simply ceased to exist.
Now assuming it imploded into nothingness, we would also cease to exist. An implosion of this kind could only result in a black hole when a body with the mass of the sun implodes into a singularity. However, we would know about this briefly as the earth accelerated into the event horizon, at which point, oblivion would be our only future. We would first see the light from the sun quickly diminish into nothing before the acceleration of the earth toward the event horizon. Our orbital velocity would generate a spiral and, at a complete guess, I would say we would have hours or even days before we were ultimately sucked into it.
I'll let other with more advanced physics calculate the size of the event horizon based on the mass of the sun and the time it would take for us to be sucked into the cosmic vacuum cleaner. That sort of calculus is beyond my capability.

this.
initial shockwave of solar wind will trash our atmosphere, follow by Uber Microwave-oven ahoy. It might sting a tiny bit, but most likely we won't feel a thing tbh.
Edit: also, our sun doesn't have enough mass to become a blackhole or even a nuetron star, it'll end in three stages, as most stars do, red giant -> white dwarf -> supernova (boom), and all its matter will scatter. ---

When our sun reaches the end of its life it will expand into a red giant. This will happen when most of the hydrogen of the sun has been converted into helium. Then depending on the mass the fusion process will shift from hydrogen to helium and so on to even heavier elements.
During this last period of its life the sun will greatly expand its size and swallow the inner worlds, which includes our earth, before finally the red giant will eject its outer layers to form a planetary nebula, while the core collapses into degenerated matter.
From our perspective it would be a slow death of gradually increasing radiation until our world is a barren wasteland and by the time the sun swallops the earth nothing alive would be left on the planet.

There is no sound in space . Speed of sound is affected whatever material it is traveling through (Air, metal, water, etc..)... whats space made out of?
Anyways I also read somewhere, years ago so I don't remember where, that if the Sun Imploded it would create a Black Hole about 2 feet across (little over 1/2 a meter for you UK people)
I doubt it would suck us in that quickly, but then again.. I've never been sucked into a black hole so what do I know? __________________________________________________________

So we'd be baked after 8.33minutes, just as we were wondering why it suddenly got so dark. (not taking into account the atmosphere etc.)
As for if the sun just disappeared I'm guessing we'd be killed as we got wacked by a comet. If you are to believe Einstein the Earth's orbit would also disappear after 8 minutes as well.
Also the sun doesn't have nearly enough mass to supernova, so if the sun was to die it would probably just become a solid iron ball and just chill out (<<<<pun of awesomeness)

Assuming we won't be affected by the plasma and the radiation and won't collide with other bodies within the system during the outbound flight, Earth would become a rogue planet, a wanderer of interstellar space. Temperature would probably drop far below minus hundred Celsius within a few hours (days?) and the whole surface would freeze. Small communities would probably be able to survive indefinitely assuming they had prior knowledge of the event and had some time to prepare underground shelters. Military kind of ppl. and some others with influence, maybe a few lucky others who would be needed like doctors, certain kinds of scientists, nuclear reactor specialists, geologists and biologists, geneticists etc. Some politicians, obviously. I'm fairly certain that not many economists would be invited. Some grunts would be needed ofc to do the hard work but ofc military personnel would be available. They would (it's more of an assumption) probably need individuals from as many races as possible to make sure they have most of the gene varieties available for scientific research. The surface would become uninhabitable for billions of years. Basically it would remain uninhabitable forever, unless the survivors manage to develop some future technology that could provide heat on the surface. Dunno... black people would become white in the long run

The more significant thing is we would not get any warning. News of our impending doom could not arrive any sooner than the burst of radiation, which would bake most of the Earth and make those enjoying night-time breathe plasma.

Well actually there is. Space isn't pure vacuum, it has various particles floating around in it. This can actually carry sound at great speed (although attenuation is obviously awful).
Have you heard of the sun's heliopause? It's the range at which solar winds go from travelling faster than the local speed of sound to below the local speed of sound. That's generally the point beyond which you're considered to be in interstellar space. I believe Voyager 1 passed it a few years ago.

The sun dies, we loose our orbit, all life on earth is dead, the planet drifts away till it finds a new sun to orbit, life begins to grow, evolution takes place and the life forms become more intellegent, they invent fire and soon enough they have big cities and industries, and some day a lifeform ask the others what would happen if the sun exploded

I think I see whiskers too, but I don't want to get close enough to confirm.
Most importantly, how are you supposed to tell whether this is part of my post or my signature? |
