Oh I think we can all agree on that point. My hope is that if they start doing cruisers and frigates that the cost is a bit less, but we'll have to see.
Originally by: Rhatar Khurin That maybe, but resin cast models are notoriously low model detail by nature of the way they are made and the material involved.
Can you imagine the extra greatness of the Fleet Tempest if it had been done as an actual model kit. All the tiny girders and minute details perfectly done.
To finish it off all you would have to do is spray prime it then put whatever paint schem you liked on it with an airbrush and some model paints. (admittedly the painting of it could go either way on it looking good depending on talent and experience)
I was actually surprised at how much detail is there, I was expecting a lot less for the same reason you give. They may not have every scratch on the hull there, but it's still very well done.
Check out my Flickr set, I did some macro shots (lighting was crap, but oh well).
I could see there being interest for a paintable version of the models but that's going to have a much smaller interest than the already painted ones. I can't see it being cost effective at all for them to produce, especially given the niche nature of the current ones.

Originally by: Jinx Barker somehow they do not look as good as they do on CCPs website. Is it the camera? Lighting? They look too "plasticy" for the lack of a better word.
Having been at the house when Mecha took these photos, I can definitely say the camera was a factor in the appearance of the ships, most particularly the Megathron. The colors actually appear much darker and more subdued. Unfortunately the camera presented the same colors with much higher brightness and contrast. It just looked really bad compared to viewing the real thing.
I thought the models were quite solid with a good weight to them, so while they may look a bit ōplasticyö in the photos, they definitely arenĘt. My biggest disappointment was with the hand painted lights on all the ships. I was telling Mecha that had I bought them, IĘd definitely repaint most of the detailed touches. I think anyone with a little patience could have done a much better job.
For years I've flown nothing but Matari ships, so I was disappointed when seeing the Tempest. I wanted guns, more rust, and a better overall paint job. Since IĘm not an EVE role player I donĘt mind saying my favorite ship of the bunch was the Apoc. It has cool metallic accents, and wasnĘt ruined by so many of the poor quality details painted by hand.
Thanks again to Mecha for taking the photos. It was great to see them in person before they went to your office. I'm sure your co-workers often ask "WTF?"

Wow at least the navy meg has a paint job! I was seriously dissappointed by the lack of a paint job on the normal mega model (aside some glaring errors in the model itself). - - -

Ouch, any pictures of the "standard" Megathron that aren't from the CCP website? Would've hoped that the copper tops and highlights with the rusted copper sides would've come out better than the pair of dark greens used in the Navy version of the model. Diplomacy hiding in plain sight... |

It's basicly plain grey plastic, no paintjob at all except for white dots of paint as windows and a small bit of black detailing that is wrong. - - -

Pretty spiffy. Wish they weren't so expensive.. :(
I wish cars and houses weren't so expensive either, but they have value to the owners and potential buyers. These things are solid items, not hollow flimsy model kits you might get in a hobby store. The hand painting no doubt drives up the cost, as well as the fact that they're probably not producing them in the tens of thousands.
Price is justified, at least in my opinion. :)
hmm yes i see the resale value on them going into the thousands in the future.......

Wait, you can still fix it yourself!!

Most cars value decreases by half the minute its drove off the dealers lot these days. These, the minute CCP stops making them, can only go up in value if in good condition, and dont lose such a big chunk of value the minute you open the box

I for one am glad you you didn't get your wish, since Mecha was taking the photos at my house
Staying on topic though, the camera did have the brightness and contrast a little high. They definitely look more 'spiffy' in RL, especially the Apoc.
