Anyone know the name of the software the Eve Online forums is run on? Or the company who built it?

I think the code is home-written, so to speak. They'd be better off switching the forums over to Invision Power Board. It's a better system.

phpBB is free, and thus, superior
Originally by: Jovoich I'm happy with the home grown CCP forums. It works fine for me.
I actually agree with this. While some enhancements wouldn't be nice, I wouldn't like them to switch to a generic forum. Official forums for things like games should be home-grown. |

Disagree completely. They could have started with phpbb and paid someone to customise it visually and to incorporate stuff like the portrait server. End result would have been:
- a fraction of the cost - far less buggy - much easier to use i.e. consistent with 99% of forums people already use - probably easier to admin; the popular boards have very good admin functionality and I doubt this board is even close
It doesn't make much sense to say that a game company's forum should be their own work. They make games, not forum software.
You don't see plastic surgeons doing their own appendectomies.

I heard they had a deal with the creators of Hello Kitty to use their forum code, as it seemed to fit EVE online perfectly. |

Fixed.
While these forums are not perfect (actually, they are pretty crap), phpBB an it's ilk are awful and bloated.
Personally, I detest forums. I'd much rather use an email list
My main gripe is the ******ed quoting mechanics that people use. The "I'll quote a wall of text and add my one line response at the bottom" paradigm sucks.
It's bloats the storage, it bloats the bandwidth and takes up screen space forcing me to spend time scrolling
Fortunately people are starting to wake up and realise this and have begun to implement more sensible threading models (e.g. google's gmail and groups) where you don't load every bloody ******ed post and quote every time you hit the page.

Quoting style is a problem with people, not software.
If the EVE-O Fora used a threaded model, every random comment (of which there are plenty in every thread) would spawn a subthread, which would inevitably be filled with further random comments, resulting in entire branches of crap. With a flat view, a thread can be dragged back on topic or just locked as a whole if it is incurable.
Also, if I want threaded views, I go read a newsgroup. |

Indeed, forum software that can't even maintain session for many users, one which makes me log in fresh every single time I reply to a thread. Pretty much proves my point really. |

You're right about the exploits, but I don't really think it's much of an issue. Patch regularly and it's fine. We are not coordinating the G8 summit here, security doesn't need to be that perfect.
Also, email lists are far far worse for quoting pyramids; it's not a pyramid but you get massive chains of indented messages and horrific trees of '>' characters. Besides which, they may be your personal preference but the rest of the world seems pretty comfy with the forum concept.

Your point was pretty worthless anyway. It would have been better if they had paid someone to mod phpBB for them? Sure. But because they paid someone else to do it, not because it's standard software. They could just as easily have paid that someone to do this forum, and it too would have been better. The lesson? You get what you pay for. Shocking. -

^ medal, that was kinda the point of my post. Having it is all fine and dandy as it does work perfectly, but having to outsource every time you want to search gets a bit annoying. And there are a few features the search should have, which I would only expect from people who are being paid for their work (i.e CCP).

You integrated your system's authentication with the forum, right? TBH, the forums serve its purpose. Even though I like other software, what you're using is fine, as long as people can post and reply to. |

Well, I hope Evelopedia arrives sooner than that what Wrangler is thinking about. The wiki will relieve the forums a little, I think. Now we have forums wars, in the future we might have wiki wars
And also, if something akin "ghost training" happens in the future, the level of vandalization on Evelopedia could be huge, so I hope it will have strong moderation tools ("lock everything" button ) |
