Hi chaps, have some questions about gas clouds etc if anyone can lend an ear.
1. Do gas clouds for booster manufacturing exist outside any of the named COSMOS constellations, or can they only be found in these places?
2. With decent probing skills are they particularly hard to find and rare or do they spawn with sufficient frequency to make it worthwhile?
3. Could I expect to get ganked to death by the local drug cartels if I dared encroach on their turf and start looking for gas?
4. Is there only one type of harvestable gas? (mykoserocin) or do different gas types produce different boosters?
5. What sort of volume or mass does the gas have? By that I mean, do you need a mining barge to fill a hold with it or can an entire cloud be packed into a BS hold or some such?

1. I've only mined gas clouds in level 4 mining missions. Other than that, I do believe that you would have to search COSMOS and null-space. Maybe some low-sec.
2. As far as probing, you will need Exploration skills and LADAR probes. There are numerous links to the guides around here. They will explain everything needed for you or you can join the Exploration channel.
3. I don't know about drug cartels, but pirates will love you. 
4. I think there are 2 types of gas clouds. Haladas Mining guide may say for sure.
5. Gas cloud volume is 1 unit = 100m3. So 100 units will require 1000m3 of space. An Armageddon with 3 T1 cargo rigs and lo slots full of T2 expanders will get you 6373m3 of cargo space. Plenty of room for your haul.

To add a bit more to Jonak:
1) I've heard vague rumors that people have found the LADAR sites outside of their constellations before, but I've never encountered it myself. I personally chalk it up to hearsay.
4) There are two types of gas - mykoserocin, which is from the lowsec COSMOS constellations; and cytoserocin, which is found in the 0.0 COSMOS constellations. 'Myko' is used for synth boosters, while 'cyto' is used for standard/improved/strong boosters. |

1) I too have heard the stories about clouds outside their normal constellations. Never seen one myself though.
2) Low-sec ones aren't too bad. 0.0 can take a bit of work. Once you finish the site it immediately respawns in the constellation. There's always gas somewhere. There are 2-3 sites of gas per constellation as well. Since they're always in the same 7-8 systems, you'll usually get the full coverage BM's down pretty quick.
5) 1 unit of gas is 10m3. Smallest cloud has 500 units(2 clouds at that site)and they go up from there. You don't use barges. In 0.0 they can't tank the damage and gas mining is all about turrets anyway. Be warned, gas mining is at least 50% more boring than regular mining.
3) Well, it's not like you've a lot of options for selling the gas anyway. Usually we'll try and buy it off you for cheap (instant mining slave) and if that doesn't work we might take it to the next level. That said, it's lo-sec and 0.0, they'll shoot you for giggles and not just cause you're stealing gas.

Thanks for the info so far chaps
I wasn't actually planning on selling the gas. I was planning on turning it into boosters for my own ends. So neither I, nor my partners will be acting as anyones mining slave, of that you can be sure
