I've only been playing the game for about six months now, but in light of the changes coming I'm curious to understand why the obsession to 'balance' race ships against one another. Balancing makes sense in a game where players are stuck to the attributes and skill trees of a starting race, but in this game anyone can train for anything they'd like. I LIKE the idea of specialist ships that are insanely good at one thing, with a sprinkling of a few ships that are fair at a bunch of different things. There's no need to find a balance in my opinion. Not all ships should be equally good at everything.
Anyway, just making a point. I keep reading about the 'balance' argument on these forums, and I don't get it. Cheers!

Precisely. Specialist ships or anything that is insanely good should be forced to compensate with drawbacks. Most of the "balancing" is because the drawbacks are not considered severe enough for a ship/mod to be insanely good.
Take the mwd. Everyone (or nearly) fits them for pvp. The 25% reduction on cap isn't much of a drawback. You have to fit a mwd, your opponent has to fit a mwd, everyone has an equal 25% reduction of cap. The benefits of the mwd so outweigh the drawbacks that alternatives such as the afterburner aren't seriously considered. Something isn't balanced here.
Or nano cruisers. Yes they aren't perfect. However they're about the best sub capital ship types to fly. To compound the issue there are only so many ways to outfit a nano. And these are commonly known. When a few ships with a few selection of mods are viewed as the "correct" pvp ships then something needs balancing.
So balance isn't about making everything the same. Balance is about forcing the player to make options. To have those options impact tactical decisions. Balance is about having ships fill a niche without being the jack of all.

In a word: Variety
In more words: If balance isn't maintained a few specific ships would become the "correct" choice leading everything else to be a waste of database space.

Yes like if suddenlly 6 motnhs fo training become useless wouyld not hurt 'because you can train something else'. People who has trained these better things would be in favour oversomeone else, even if they have the same total SP (in combat obviouslly).
So yeah, variety is good, but balance is a must too. Teh failure of a signature. |
