Hello
Some of you may know me from way back when, though most of you will not. I don't post here very much any more, but today I want to share with you my final year university dissertation as it covers topics that are familiar to most of you. For a few weeks in February I spent some time interviewing members of large null sec alliances and I thank them for their assistance in helping me complete this project.
The topic is authority and leadership in Eve. It it is written for a degree in social science and the content and style of writing reflects this. Because you are all well versed veterans of Eve and other games, I don't know how much of it will seem obvious to you. The intended audience (my dissertation supervisor) has no knowledge of the game or virtual worlds, and so the text makes explicit much of what we take for granted in Eve. That said, I hope that even the most experienced among you may find something of interest, if only by clarifying and putting into words the things you may already have been aware of. For those who are less experienced, it may give you a glimpse into the roles played by alliance leaders and paint a partial picture of what it takes to be an effective leader.

This account is intentionally limited to members of TranquilityGÇÖs larger null sec alliances who control and wage war over territory, for I believe it is here that EveGÇÖs leadership structures are most pronounced and amenable to research.
Then lost intrest because of the narrowmindedness of the dissertation.
Dissertations at this level are necessarily limited in their scope. This one was limited to 12,000 words. More comprehensive research would be feasible for a PhD project. |

Is it because you keep telling them you're the CEO of State War Academy? |

Jon Taggart wrote:Just spotted this thread and I was wondering how the dissertation was coming along. Also, is this for a Bachelor's degree or for your Masters?
Pretty interesting stuff, as there is a lack of academic research pertaining to MMOs besides World of Warcraft, especially for games like EVE Online.
Nice to see other people interested in the field as well. I'll be heading to Columbia U. for my Doctorate in Communications this fall and MMOs will be the focus of my research, especially this game.
Interesting stuff and good luck with your work!
It's ready and linked in the first post. It's for a bachelor's degree. An Eve Dissertation |

I may write more at some point.
In the UK I think dissertations are the norm for social science degrees. Most are pretty short though because students will have other modules going on at the same time. An Eve Dissertation |

I think I just answered my own question.

You did indeed. You have become their de facto CEO (or mentor) in some sense. Holding the title is much less important. An Eve Dissertation |

Sadly WoW attracts the most interest, but I hope we see more Eve related stuff in the future. An Eve Dissertation |

I'm glad you picked up on that, because that's exactly how I felt while writing it. I would have loved to have had another 2-3k words as there is quite a bit more to be said on the topic. An Eve Dissertation |

I do research in the field of Leadership myself, so this looks interesting. Although a quick scan of your references section suggests we might follow different approaches ;). However, since this is a bachelor's you have plenty of time to be shown the light!
What are your future plans?
I'd love to do some studies in EVE. I'm restricted to football (soccer) at the moment though.
Plan is to do further study in Politics and International Studies. What are you referring to when you say "the ligth"? An Eve Dissertation |
