That's right, it is possible to catch and punish these guys when they steal your ore. It just takes a little patience and creativity. Yesterday while mining my daily quota an ore thief, we'll call him 'sh1tforbrains' for now, showed up in a badger and started closing in on my can. A few moments later, poof, about 8000m3 dissappeared and the can poofed. Knowing I couldn't fire on him, I decided instead that the best I could do was harrass him. So, I pointed my considerably more agile vessel at him and rammed him. Sticking to him like glue I made sure that he couldn't align, warp, or move more than 10m/s by constantly ramming him. Then, by miraculous chance, a wave of 4 rats appeared on my scanner (a normal occurance in my belt) about 35km off and started closing in. But, they weren't flashing... And it dawned on me that it wasn't ME the rats were targeting. Grinning like a little kid who just got his hands on the cookie jar I decided then and there that if the thieves are going to exploit the game mechanics to their advantage, I was going to do the same. By repeatedly ramming him over and over I assured that he wouldn't get away, sealing his fate. Apparently his indy wasn't armed or outfitted with much more than cargo expanders because he didn't shoot back at the rats, or use any defensive modules, although he threatened to report me for exploiting a few times. It was a long wait, but all my ramming paid off when the NPC rats blew the halfwit's indy into space dust. I easily dispatched the rats with my drones, picked up my indy, and retrieved what was mine. Now maybe he'll think twice before stealing again.
Let this be a lesson to ore thieves everywhere. You aren't the only ones who know how to exploit the system to your advantage. We can, and will, fight back. And our techniques will be just as 'cheap' and 'lame' as yours.

just for the record kids, it's not an exploit. It's taking a risk, which usually pays off until you find a nice ore thief ( if it's in 0.5 or higher )
NPCs always pick on indies, but interesting tactic, albeight not one I agree with. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Originally by: EVE Support Website An exploit is when someone takes advantage of a bypass in normal game mechanics.
Originally by: EVE Support Website The regular containers were designed to jettison unwanted items into space or to hold loot from blown up ships. They were designed so that any player could take from them because that was essential for them to function as they were intended. Players later invented the "container mining" method after noticing that the containers could hold way more than any cargo hold.
Jet cans are used in a method that bypasses normal game mechanics and were not intended for that use, therefore, exploit. I believe even the GMs said it was an exploit, but they just turn a blind eye to it. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

If it's an exploit, why do they just not limit the capacity of jet cans to less than a small secure container? I don't believe EITHER technique is an exploit. Alledged ore thieves are working within the bounds of the law, the same as people who mine into jet cans. CONCORD don't see anything wrong with people taking ore from a jet can, therefore it's merely a moral question as to whether it's right or wrong. I was mining into jet cans in beta, so it's not exactly a new thing. And for CCP to leave an exploit in the game for over a year from live seems a little balmy to me.
If you mine into a jet can, you risk losing what you've mined, it's as simple as that. For someone to come up with the ingenious idea of stopping the alledged ore thief from leaving with what he considers his is within the bounds of the law too. I'd do the same, only I'd have a mate on the way in a caracal to toast the bugger. Regardless of the loss of a cruiser, just to teach the him a lesson.
Kudos to you Attrael!
