Since there appears to be some dev resistance to skill queues, how about modifying the learning rate formula to include double learning rate for as much time as no skill has been in training?
It'd work something like this:
- Skill finishes and the EVE server notes the time of completion (this already happens).
- When a new skill is selected, the time difference between the current time and when the previous skill completion is calculated.
- The skill point accrual rate for the new skill is double for a period up to the length of time calculated in the previous step.
- If the new skill completes before the double accrual rate runs out, the extra 'power learning time' is lost (so set a longer skill).
You could allow power learning time to accrue, but that seems like it could get complicated quickly. This system is relatively simple and seems like it would be pretty easy to implement.

similar to the offline bonus in wow? no thanks
Skills are about micro management yes i lose an hour here or 45 minutes there while training and yes a "q" would be nice. But a multiplier like that would be used by people who leave there character offline for long periods then power level for a short time. Which is equivalent to not trained time = trained time which it doesnt i mean what about the 5 minutes it takes for me to jc set up and get ready with my implants and such before i start the training again. Each character in the game would have to have these calculations going on......

ooh, that's a good point. I hadn't really thought much about implants. You'd have to account for implants, which makes this a lot messier.

Two thoughts on this.
1~ Instead of treating it as a straight doubling of the sp/second training rate (or whatever it is) it could be treated as a multiplier to the BASE stat. (By base, i mean the stat, including skills, before implant bonuses are added.)
By doing that you'd avoid helping people who wait until they have +5 implants to try and get a boost out of it, as implants wouldnt get any bonus from time missed.
2~ Only paid time counts as time missed. With the whole ghost training thing in the spotlight at the moment, that much is a given anyway.
Hope that helps.

I've always thought it was silly that their excuse for not having a queue system is to "encourage people to play the game more." If that were true, they'd have some kind of mechanism to increase training speed while online (or for the first hour you're online or some such).

You mean like earning SP per kill?
I agree. Either have skill training all the time and let us manage it properly, or go back to standard MMO logic of only improve when playing and bring back grind. Yay. Not.
As to the OP: I think I'd still prefer a skill queue. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... Environmental Effects

I really don't think the doubling idea would be as good as a skill queue. But even the skill queue option could be abused. People could use it to keep training when busy, sure. But it could also be used to have your character train even though you can't afford to pay for your subscription. It would have to be setup so the skills would only train if your account was up to date.
