The sound has a lot of static in it while running on my new iMac. I almost have to play with the sound off, or at least turned way down. No other apps sound this way so I know it is not the computer/speakers. I didn't see any references to this in the forum. Does anybody else have this problem?

Have you tried headphones? Or connected to a amplifier?
I had a similar problem with a PC and it turned out to be a faulty soundcard/connector issue, but it was only in the "front" connector (where i had my headphones). If the problem goes away with headphones etc. then it's not a hardware issue.
And no, haven't had any similar problems on the imac.

Thanks for your message. I tried the headphones and the sound is fine. Then I disconnected my Bose USB speaker system and played the game through the iMac speakers and the sound is fine also. Don't know why the game would sound so bad through the Bose speakers while everything else (music, movies, other games) sound so great... Problem solved though.
Thanks again. |

I think it's a general problem that EvE has with USB. When i listen to the EvE Sound through my USB Audio Interface on my iMac sound is a complete mess ;). So i guess it's the same known issue you have. Plz don't say "Problem solved" ... because it isn't û you just found a workarround. The problem is still there, and CCP should fix it. ;) TeῑϞηaϞ Γ |

The logic used for sound in EvE (or better: in Windows) is totally different than that used under OsX. They do have severe problems at low level. What happens has to do with sound buffer underruns. Sound is nearly never continuous. How resilient to underruns and sound interruptions the hardware is will play a big part to what you actually hear. USB actually complicates this even more as the USB interface protocol itself is not the best for that sort of situation.
Anyway it is not technically correct to say that they have a problem with USB. They have a problem with sound. That problem is not critical because good audio hardware can compensate. USB audio hardware generally fails at that (USB is generally a bad solution for anything that is time critical or speed critical).
To make it understandable to non technical people, consider it like this: USB can attain decent transfer speeds, but it is very bad at latency: it lags.

Good point about "problem solved". Guess I was just happy not to have to listen to that awful sound through the usb speakers. |

Sry, but what you tell us here is simply not the truth.
USB protocoll is pretty awsome for having external Audio Interfaces. Professional Audio Studios use USB Audio Interfaces every day, handling Sample rates up to 192kHz, and latencies that are more than decent - and all that for more than just one channel at a time.
It is NOT the fault of the USB protocoll not beeing able to handle Audio - it is prety much fast enough to handle that. It is also NOT a too chep USB hardware. Mine is made for handling Audio I/O. The problem we have here lies within the aplication called EvE-Online. ;)
Every other Audio aplication sounds fine through my USB Audio Interface. Simple playback with iTunes as well as music production with Logic 8, and every other Game sound plays back really well. TeῑϞηaϞ Γ |

I did not say that USB is too slow or have too much latency to handle audio. You can in fact handle dozens of audio tracks at high sampling rate through USB. As long as you do it being careful to avoid any underrun. Even if USB has hight latency, you can still very easily manage provide more than enough data to replenish the audio buffers.
What I'm saying is that USB's hight latency makes things much worse when, for some reason, you DO NOT keep feeding audio to it.
The EvE client running under Cedega does NOT manage to feed audio continuously. And it has huge problems with buffer underrun detection. This IS a problem in the client. But it is a very low priority problem because the reference system is the standard audio hardware. And the standard hardware manages to blend the audio together despite the frequent interruptions. Most USB based audio interfaces (especially the professional ones) are much less resilient to this sort of problems. And the end result is that you hear static.
