On topic: I hope these customisation options are given to manufacturers, not pilots. Of course, pilots could still build their own but this seems like a great opportunity to introduce proper crafting.

While this has an enormous potential for fun, and something that WILL make you look at your mate's ship, not just a bracket in space with a "cerberus" or "Rokh" name beside it, This pose two major questions:
- Overall balance, likely being even more nightmarish
- How this will affect performance, as far as lag (more infos to transmit between cliend and server), and graphical lag (more models to keep in memory, and custom color? alliance tag?...

The important bits as declared by me (and that's all that matters):
- T3 ships sounds like an epic can of worms in the balance department - calling it now; the future whining about the ZeroSigSensorDampingLazo****age IWin button (or whatever it turns out to be) will put the nano whines of the past to shame.
- With all the different combinations of bits resulting in an ungodly number of variations, then throw on top of that the different load-outs possible with mods, how the hell are we going to name all these ships? -- The MissleSpammerCloakyGravcoreArmorChunkinator? -- So much for the simple Neutdomi scheme, eh?
- I imagine Gripen's "Oh, my EFT-backbone" reaction was probably a kodak moment
- It should be pretty damn cool regardless
they'll be easy to name as the eve-players, true to form, will in short order reduce the multitude of flavors down to a half dozen or less truly shiny combinations which will be promptly nerfed, thus keeping the training cycle fresh, as eve ever does, by then forcing people to train for ever-so-slightly-less-shiny combinations which will then enter the scene... wash rinse repeat... fortunes will be made and lost speculating as to which ones will catch on and which ones will not... I don't like the idea because it's a tease. I don't like getting used to something then having it taken away because it's not balanced. It's like having your favorite toy thrown in the trash. I wish they would not go further down the path of allowing things to self-correct, but such is the way of things for eve and ccp.

Well you have to admit that if they really do go down this path for an expansion, testing it will be a real nightmare.
Exponential logical paths.
Missing something overpowered is basically inevitable. Not nerfing it once it's found just because it's someones favorite toy would be wrong for the game as a whole.

Im bagging(??) the current evil forces in control of CCP (not the whole company) and indeed the small percentage of whopping overexcited sweaty nerds lapping up like mana from heaven shoddy half finished graphics of a rotating ship.
The game itself is very good as I have said many times. Hence why I play it. DESPITE the above.. not because.

Ya, but Spore blows on an epic scale...
I'm not that worried. Pen and Paper RPG's have been dealing with ship customization for literally decades. As long as whomever is doing this has a copy of Traveller (and edition but Mega), Fire Fusion & Steel, GURPS Vehicles and GURPS Space they probably have scene enough of how others do it not to make any horrible mistakes. TBH Rigs always felt like something initially designed by White Wolf, this does also.

CCP generally plays it safe when assigning ship stats these days (BlackOps anyone? ) I'd be willing to bet these ships will be somewhat inferior to standard classes unless heavily specialized for a specific role.
But even if it does produce crap stats and sub-par craft... I like designing ships. Hell, it's more interesting than Ambulation.

any mention of how they are gonna be made? im imagining some sort of invention process for each ship part.
im also imagining how unbelievably expencive these things are gonna be if u need to get the bits from exploration. repeat of rigs and invention datainterfaces me thinks.

This. And the fact that CCP has already gone through the painful process of losing control of DPS and ship speed and having to correct them.
Whatever rules they come up with, they could be applied "backwards" to the existing designs: it might actually become easier to balance a fixed-size set of ship construction rules, rather than try to keep an ever-expanding roster of ships and modules individually balanced.

After the complete FAILBOAT of the augmented and integrated drones deployment through an exploration mechanism, this is a *huge* worry.
Also, large alliances are going to be able to move into W-space and lock down the best bits (like the high end moons). I *really* hope they are looking at making the distribution of T3 high volume and hard to choke off, otherwise it will just become a private toy of the big alliance power blocks.

Maybe it'll actually make skirmish warfare a thing that can actually happen if true primaries cant be called other than looking at a characters name and his distance from the fleet.

I don't think it'll be quite that bad. What we've seen is a single model of ship capable of being moded to an extent. So people who are create/have the ISK will specialise their ships to do certain tasks, or be a jack of all trades-master of none. But the ships still seem like they're carry the same feel as any other ship. Caldari will be missles and shields primarily, Amarr will be lasers and tanks, etc.
I'm sure that once we're actually given information and stats on the pieces, and what sort of min-maxing can be done, how hard it'll be to do, how difficult/expensive it'll be to get, how common they'll be, etc.
So for now it's best to calm down, take a deep breath, and try not to speculate the downfall of EVE. ^_^; - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

No. They're ship parts.
You pick nose, tail, guts, top wingy bit from a set of different parts and stick them together, LEGO-wise, to create the final ship. Depending on what parts you pick, you get different stats, fittings, younameit.
They're talking about 5 different sections, 5 variations in each ù 3125 combinations totalà per race. It may be lowered later due to tech and balance constraints
And I give it a week after release until the Min-Max crowd have configured the latest FOTM and everyone is shouting "IMBALANCE!" on the Forums ...

I don't think it'd be the downfall. Personally I think it'd make FCing much more interesting.
The thing is, just knowning if Amarr uses lasers or Caldari missiles doesn't change much. A Raven and a Scorpion both use missiles, but which do you primary first? The Scorpion, of course.
I guess FCing will now mean you have to know what all those different sections do. --------- Your bad loan management perfectly strikes the stock market, wrecking for -777.68 points. Eve job list |
