Must be the most daft thing ever.
In 0.0 - Makes it very easy to log off whenever someone enters if you want to avoid combat, thus making 0.0 completely safe.
In "empire" - makes it very easy to avoid fighting against people you're at war with, yet again making the game more like a single-player game with built-in chat support.
Not to mention the SPAMMING... g'sus, glad I'm not based in Yulai.
And... Let's take a step back and look at the issues with lag recently. and issues with chat channels. Your clever solution is to introduce a feature that must create even more???
Once again, to improve PvP: 1. remove the show pilots docked/in space in the map 2. remove the displaying of characters currently in local. 3. remove insta-jumps/docks 4. finish fixing the turrets and missiles 5. fix the drones (yes they still hit at 150 Km) -- "I am an expert in not caring. The trick is to stop giving a rat's ass about anyone else and start thinking about what YOU want, what YOU diserve, what the world ows YOU!" - Bender |

No, it dosn't create more lag.
Secondly, you can disable it if you don't want it. Right click on the "local", select "Hide join/parts".
And regarding 0.0, you ALWAYS keep an eye on local. Wether it gives you a text string, or you see that person in local list, is no different.

IMHO this should be security status reliant. In 1.0 space it's up to date on the minute, in 0.1 its an hour or so old, in 0.0 space it's non-existant. So that it's linked to the scanners of an empire.

This is where you're wrong. It does make a difference. It makes it easier to spot when a known hostile enters the system you're in, the more people already in the channel the more difficult it used to be, now it's just too easy to run and log whenever people you dont like enter a system.
In empire space, the crowded system especially, this feature has made it FAR easier to spot when a group of players enter a system. Before you had to continueally scroll through the list for known faces, now you conviniently get a message allowing you to ocationally glance away and not risk missing anything.
This announcement is as different from the old system as having a 7 foot high, 400 pound bald doorman in a pink tutu stand at the entry to your front door screaming the name of an arriving guest at the top of his lungs as the guest enters.
My point is that it is yet another nail in the coffin for PvP, and on top of that I cannot help but think about the hours of valuable programming time was wasted on this... -- "I am an expert in not caring. Most people I know in 0.0 space are always paying attention to the local pictures so picture or text makes no difference. There also is no shortage of PvP. You might not fight that one or two people, but there are ten others just looking for a fight.

All indies must drop out of warp at my optimal 11. Instapod needed, seriously.. this is no joke 12. all ships uncloak with 100K of pirates
.... can ne1 think what else while we're at it?

I like this turned on in corp chat etc., but off in help. So a global option isn't that good...
