Chiming in here to say I'm having the same problem.
I finally sent an in game petition - not that they'll necessarily respond, but still. I included a link to this thread in the petition.
What pushed me "over the edge" was losing *another* round of Hammerhead II's on a lvl 3 mission. At $650k per drone it's just taking everything I'm making on the mission to break even.
/sigh

Well I'd say it is a bug, though not in the game client. No they didn't write game code that caused this, but there is a "bug" so to speak that is easily tracked down by any number of people here and there's some fishy routing going on.
Tracing route to 87.237.38.200 over a maximum of 30 hops (removed more local pings...) 7 41 ms 40 ms 41 ms pos-1-8-0-0-cr01.losangeles.ca.ibone.comcast.net [68.86.86.13] 8 52 ms 40 ms 42 ms TenGE13-2.br02.lax04.pccwbtn.net [63.218.51.17] 9 164 ms 167 ms * telecity.ge9-9.br02.ldn01.pccwbtn.net [63.218.13.222] 10 165 ms 164 ms 165 ms mailtx.2zxr.com [217.20.44.10] 11 * * * Request timed out. 12 167 ms 166 ms 164 ms 87.237.38.200
Anyone tried going through a proxy service to see if they can use a different route to CCP's servers?

Well tonight I played for a couple hours without a single hiccup doing the same sort of things I normally do (lvl 3 missions these days.) I checked and yes I'm still having the same tracert results that show telecity and mailtx.2zxr.com as problem points in the route. I don't get it. Of course, after I was done I left myself sitting in station for a just few minutes to get something to eat and drink, but came back to find I was stuck and got the disconnect. I know people have reported that keeping the connection constantly active helps a lot so maybe this latest problem was a result of inactivity. Even so, it's still a problem in that it wasn't the intended function of the client to kick me, but rather a loss of connectivity.
Sure I'm glad I had no problems while playing, but I know it will happen again sooner or later and there's not much I feel I can do to prepare for it.

This smells more like a networkcapacity problem with always and massivly increasing internettraffic. Perhaps theres a large datacenter overhaul going on. Who knows.
If it's truly a capacity problem then things are going to be very interesting with the expansion and boxed re-release.

I did. With help of proxy server I finally can connect to CCP's server and play without DCs because new route avoiding telecity servers.
Strong evidence to support what most everyone here already suspected.
Care to share your set up so others can try to reproduce your results?

For some reason I've had no problems the last few nights. I wonder if this is because there was lighter load (in game and just online in general) than prime time on the weekend and so we're back to the possible capacity problem at hops like telecity. It'll be interesting to see if the problem ramps up at obviously busy times.

Yeah I read that blog piece as well. You'd think though that if they are about to release something (expansion and boxed version) that will inevitably have a large initial influx that CCP would be concerned about some as basic and serious as a major routing problem between them and their customers.
I'm just saying is all...

Edited by: Johren on 27/02/2009 15:44:19 Edited by: Johren on 27/02/2009 15:44:01 Little update here.
Had the problem once last night and it was when I was getting overconfident about things. I was running missions and started tabbing out to some websites pretty often. Sure enough that did me in. Luckily I had scooped my drones this time before the dreaded socket closed happened. After that, I made sure to stick to the window and even interact regularly - even if it was just browsing the market - and I didn't get booted another time.
This isn't terribly new to people, but just one more observation I suppose.

Oddly enough, ping plotter shows much better results through that telecity hop after the expansion than before, but I'm still getting the occasional socket closed disconnects.
I got fed up with it Saturday night when I lost all 5 of my deployed Hammerhead II drones. I'm tired of having to buy those things back due to no fault of my own so this time I sent in a petition and asked for them to be replaced. Surprisingly the next day the replacement drones were sitting in my hangar. At least that went smoothly, though this would be much easier if the problem wasn't happening in the first place to all of us.
