Continueing through today for me too. The game is quite unplayable in its current state.
Got to agree that it'd seem to be the current patch what's caused the problem. |

Don't have time to read the whole thread, so I'm not sure if this is similar to what everyone else is seeing or not, but I only developed the problem today. I had some issues getting online yesterday, but no messages about the socket closing like I saw this morning.

To CCP,
If you are expecting me to help you in this matter you got another thing coming. I will NOT assist in this situation as it has NOTHING to do with me. Get your things together and fix the problem.. by yourself..

same "issue" ( = microsoft speech for BUG) here...
i was online, logged off for char swap, and couldnt log on either. message: socket closed. i use winXP, with classic client. never had that before today.
i shut down my computer, resetted my router (power off/on), and was able to login once. after the next char swap same message again.
lets hope this gets worked out, eve was flawlessly connection-wise for me so far.

Same issue, worked right until I patched EVE. I notice that the Status "Unknown" comes up really quick and the "Socket was closed" comes up nearly instantly too, usually means it didn't really try. Tracert and ping to the server are fine, nothing else fails and it started when EVE was patched. I hope this gets fixed soon. "So how did you survive this long in 0.0 with no MWD?" 'I didn't. I died. Completely new to Eve Online, I only just paid to extend my trial account yesterday. No problems until today.
Is this a normal occurrence with this game/company? If so, I might give this a miss.
Not a good first impression to a new customer. |

Please note that "socket closed" errors today (the 13th) around 14.00 GMT were related to problems with our proxies. This is not the same "Socket closed" problems which have been reported earlier in this thread.

I'm having a similar issue with the same error message but in my case I've never been kicked off the server, I've just not able to log in for over 12 hrs.
I've resolved my issue by tunneling outside my University's firewall. So, for those of you who cant login AT ALL due to a socket issue and you can login from other Internet connections then you may want to try this. If you're just getting booted then you're likely having a different issue.
WARNING: THIS IS NOT A SINGLE-STEP SETUP. YOU WILL BE USING 3 DISTINCT APPLICATIONS FOR THIS PROCESS. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THESE STEPS THEN FIND A FRIEND WHO DOES. IF YOU DO, THEN READ ONLINE ABOUT PROXYING WITH THESE APPS, YOU'LL FIND PLENTY OF INFO.
1) Setup at another location (outside the firewall that is probably causing your issue) or lease a Linux server with shell access and preferably unlimited monthly transfer (something you can only access by some web control panel will NOT work for this). You can get this as low as $4/mo or free if you're trying to play from work/school/etc and have enough bandwidth at home (if you're running Windows at home then you can use Cygwin as your SSH server).
2) Install Putty and configure a SSH tunnel to your server.
3) Install Sockscap and run EVE through it. You should have EVE run through Sockscap and Sockscap should use the local port that is being forwarded through Putty.
If you've followed these steps and EVE works then congratulations, you've just bypassed some IT department's firewalls. If they're attentive then they may discover what you're doing. Be prepared for them to call in the cavalry if they do because nothing incites nerd rage like going around IT's security measures. For less visibility you can use a common port instead of the default SSH port. Port 80 to hide among the general Internet browsing traffic. Alternatively you can use port 21, the default FTP port so it can often hide among legitimate traffic.

Im getting the same. I have noticed that when there is other net activity eg I open a web browser in background sockets tend to close at that time - I am not an interweb expert though so really no idea why.

Nice of CCP Casqade to reply in another thread, linking to this thread, his reply.
But, you sir didn't read my entire post, before linking your 'we need this information' then LOCKING that thread, so nobody can ask any questions? When that information, has NOTHING to do with what I mentioned was my problem. I'll paste in my first petition, and the reply I got.
"Today, 12/13/08, around 1430 PST. YOUR exefile crashed. Now I can even get to the log on screen, the game continues to crash. Checking the forum, you've had this problem since AUGUST, and now 4 months later it's STILL happening?"
HERE'S THE REPLY I GOT:
"Could you please run the game with the following attributes.
Go to the directory where EVE is installed and create a shortcut for the EVE process ( eve.exe ) when the shortcut has been created right click on "eve.exe - shortcut" and select properties.
In the shortcut tab under Target add /minidump behind the target line so it'll look something similar to this "C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /minidump.
Reproduction step are very important part of the report. Write exactly what you did to make the problem happen. This will help the programmers see where the problem is, and hopefully make it happen on their own computers. Using the logserver (to minimize problems with this, its recommended that you either restart your computer or check Task managers process list for unresponsive instances of Eve.exe). 1.Find your Eve folder in Windows Explorer 2. When you have the Eve folder open, find "logserver.exe" and launch it (Do NOT have EVE running) 3. Select "File" -> "New Workspace" 4. Start Eve using the shortcut you created 5. When you have reproduced the bug, Eve crashes or when you kill the process if it hangs, select "File" -> "Save workspace as..." and save the workspace in a place you'll find it again.
Finding the crashdump
1. Press Windows Key + R and paste the following line into the Run window. %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\ if you use Windows XP %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\ if you use Windows Vista.
2. Find the .dmp file with the most recent time stamp. Files called #error*.txt are useless.
1. Also run the DirectX diagnostics tool: Press 'Start' and select 'run'. Type dxdiag and hit enter. When you do this, a window will pop up. 2. Click the "Save All Information" button that's located in its lower right corner. 3. In order to thoroughly test your connection to the EVE server then I recommend that you download a program called pingplotter which is available here http://www.pingplotter.com/downloads/pngplt_2.exe If you are running a hardware firewall (SPI Firewall) on your router you will need to disable it, as otherwise this program won't work. After starting up pingplotter do the following in the program: 1) Under "Adress to trace" put the following value in the box: 87.237.38.200 2) In the bottom left corner in the box "# of times to trace" put the value 1500 3) In the bottom left corner in the box "Trace Intervals" change it to 2.5 seconds 4) In the bottom left corner in the box "Samples to include" change it to 1500. 5) Click on "Trace" button in the bottom left corner. When it's completed save it as the sample set ( pp2 ) 4. Then compress all files and attach the compressed file to either this e-mail or by using the attachment box by logging in to "My Petitions" on our homepage ( http://support.eve-online.com/Pages/Petitions/MyPetitions.aspx ) and opening the petition there. An attachment box is presented after opening the petition.
Best regards, Senior GM Retrofire EVE Online Customer Support"
First, the add '/minidump' in the properties. Vista will not allow that action. Hard to run the game for more then 15 minutes, if I can't get PAST THE SPLASH SCREEN!!!!!! I've pinged, and there was no blockage.
I've uninstalled, and reinstalled TWICE...both classic and premium. Removed everything. CCP ExeFile still crashes. I CAN NOT PLAY!!!
What now?

I ran out of characters. So this is not a double post.
Looking through this forum, I can see multiple other people with, if not the same problem, something close. This problem just does not just effect Vista, but XP and MAC.
All that information you, CCP, are asking for...means you're trying to avoid admitting that something that YOU did with the latest patch f*&ked up the ExeFile. There is nothing on my end of the net, or my computer that's changed before or after your latest patch. Argo, the problem exists with your patch. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. So stop treating us like children.

Pathetic.
I get kicked out with a "lost connection" or a "socket closed" about every 10 minutes. The game is basically un-playable.
I put up with getting booted every couple of hours pre-QR, but this is really a problem.
I've been in game for 2 years and I log in almost every day. This is the worst connection problems I've ever seen.
