Im saving up to buy a raven, but in the mean time I still need to train the skills to be able to pilot one as well.
But before all that, what skills should I train so that I can use a raven effectively? It might depend on the weapons your equipping on it, but generally there should be at least some similarities.
Thank you very much for your insights!

That was kind of general, I was looking for specifics! Like doing a quick look through around, I have to train heavy missiles up, and cruise missiles. And as to shields, there are many options, some that you need specifically to put equipment on the raven, and some that support it (like shield management). thanks again

You will need ALL missile support skills, ideally to level 5, definitely at level 4.
Getting the cruise missile skill itself to level 5 is useful, as well as Caldari Battleship. I wouldnt worry about fitting T2 Cruise Launchers, invest in Caldari Navy Launchers as they offer the best ROF.
You absolutely need some T2 medium drones, so work on getting Gallente Drone Specialisation as Hammerhead II are the best all round.
You need as much cap as you can get, and a fast regenerating cap too, in order to maintain a decent tank. You will never have a perma-active tank, but effective use of an XL shield booster can get you through any mission, coupled with rat specific hardeners. Necessary skills imo include;
Guided Missile Precision IV/V Missile Bombardment IV/V Missile Projection IV/V Rapid Launch IV/V Warhead Upgrades IV/V Drones V Drone Interfacing IV/V Gallente Drone Specialisation Tactical Shield Manipulation IV Jury Rigging (You'll want to put 3 cap control circuits in the rig slots) Energy Grid Upgrades IV Weapon Upgrades V Engineering V Electronics IV/V Shield Management IV/V Shield Operation IV/V Energy Management IV/V Signature Analysis IV/V Long Range Targeting IV/V Navigation IV/V Caldari Battleship IV/V Cruise Missiles V Cybernetics V (to fit +5 implants for maximum effectiveness)
This all assumes you are going to use this ship for PVE.

Use a AB moa instead with tech 2 guns, I do lvl 4 missions in my eagle not sure how a moa would go but as long as your moving you should be able to do it in a moa.

Don't believe the forum trolls (unless you are one). I have been flying it just fine through level 4s since the patch.

Ahh no not a troll, just a careful individual, toon's 3 y/o's or so, love pvp and also do run missions, but learnt pretty fast that you should never undock in a patch day! Didn't have time to test out the new changes yet anyways...

That would be a nice start.

Raven is still as good in missions as it was post-patch.
Only the people who don't have drone skills and killed frigates with cruise missiles think otherwise. |

Good skills for Raven post-patch are: Amarr Battleship, Large Energy Weapons and armor tanking skills. And then buy an Apoc/Paladin/Nightmare.
Or train target painting to level 20 and fit 5 target painters and 6 webifiers and then structure tank your missions.

that is the most useless advice ever. First of all you are sugesting a new player that hardly has the money to buy a raven to train for Cybernetics level 5. Roflcopter and Lollercoaster. Cruise Missiles level 5?! Come'on! He wants to fly the Raven decently not maxed out.... Eventually he will get them up but what he asks now is what skills to have to get into that expensive raven and fly it without losing it to a single rat.
Just dont listen to those answers.

good start
I would add
energy management 5 energy systems operation 5 targeting 4 scout drone operation 5 drones 5 gallente drone spec 2 drone Interfacing 4
and take away advanced weapon upgrades 4 (I think that is what he means by advanced weapons) cruise raven will have plenty of power grid left over. although get weapon upgrades 4, as t2 bcus are nice to have (unless you want to go buy caldari navy) |

Edited by: Arkadrell on 21/11/2008 15:04:50 the RIGHT way to train a raven! is this:
Gallente BS 5 (get into a dominix) Drones 5 Sentry drones 5 drone durability 5 drone interfaceing 5 drone sharpshooting 5
all done ;)
go do missions faster than your caldari friends that waste ammo on missiles. go do missions while you take a nap, your drones will handle things even if your afk.
ps. thank me later if you do decide to pick this route instead of missile boat (and trust me you should). Missiles are a fack up for missions now, missiles are a fackup for pvp.. in short... missiles are facked up atm.
drones never change, hybrid turrets is 1 weapon system used by 2 races, so that way if something goes bad with gallente you can fly caldari and visa versa. Its besically the... smart way to go, if your not going FoTM.
in short your halfways nuts if your training minmatar or missile skills. |

Forget the target painter if your a low SP pilot.
When you first get into a Raven with low SP skills your tank is very fragile so a slip up in aggro management might mean a quick death if your not well tanked.
Using a Target Painter takes up a valuable mid slot which is needed for tanking, especially when your just getting into what is a very serious investment for a newer player. The only benefit to the TP is so you can take down Frigates with your missiles. Instead of a TP, train up medium drones to take frigates down.

100% agree on weapon upgrades, you will need it for the tight CPU. Adv.Weapon upgrades is useful when you branch into other ships and PVP or want to train to get the Golem.
I would also add getting all the racial drone specialisatons. You only need to get them to lvl 2 and you can use all tech2 medium drones which will give you coverage of all damage types. Very useful to have and will take down frigates and cruisers while you use Cruise on the bigger stuff.
I'd also advise getting T2 shield gear ASAP. For one thing T2 gear is allot cheaper than high end T1 gear so if you do loose your ship your loss isn't quite so bad. Getting T2 Cruise missile launchers takes a while but once your happy with your tank, your drones and some basic navigation skills (your Raven will seem very slow!) T2 Cruise is a good place to go for any mission runner.

Why?
Because Caldari Navy gear is vastly superior to all T2 gear. A CN BCU has a 40%ish lower CPU requirement and a higher damage bonus than a T2 BCU. Very useful in a Raven or CNR fit where CPU is always tight. |
