Edited by: Slanty McGarglefist on 15/11/2008 04:22:28 Just logged into EVE and a popup came up for E-ON magazine, but right next to it looked like an ad for E-Bank. It had a cutesy slogan and such. Did E-ON do a cover story of the corporation, or did they really pay for ad space?

Correct we have our adverts in EON much like they have their adverts on our site.
That pic looks quite nice (as do the ones in the EON mags) |

I raised an eyebrow when I logged in and saw this advert as, and lets say I never visit the forums, it very much makes Ebank look CCP run or at the very least condoned.
For talkings' sake, lets say there was a Zbank who ran a similar ad and it turned out to be a scam, would CCP reimburse the lost isk due to it being advertised at the log in screen? |

Of course not. Why should they?
Though I'm definately not 100% sure, E-ON is part of CCP's affiliate program or whatever it's called. As part of that, I imagine CCP gives E-ON advertising permissions at times to advertise whatever they want, provided it meets their allowed content rulings (i.e. E-ON wouldn't be allowed to advertise, say, Krispy Kremes, but they'd be allowed to advertise, I dunno, a shop that sells EVE shirts? Taking stabs in the dark here).
As E-ON is Quote: professionally written and produced by a dedicated team of writers and designers from within the EVE community and beyond.
where within EVE community basically means "people who play EVE", there's no reason they couldn't offer an advertising spot for ISK, which they paid RL money to CCP for.
To parallel your question, what's to stop an eve-radio presenter saying "Hey guys, when you find me and kill me in this low-sec system I'll give you 20 million ISK" and just setting up a gank-trap for players who come looking? Certainly not CCPs fault.
Sorry, but I've just had a bar lately of people not taking responsibility for their own actions a-la PLEX wtb 'scams', and expecting CCP to hold their hand....
Everyone has their price, and CCP and E-ON are no different.

Let me first say that my isk stays in my wallet, if its sitting with someone else then its not 'my' isk until its back in my wallet - you take your chances etc etc
*but playing devils advocate a lil bit*
I take out an ad in EON for EPS (Eve Pyramid Scam) and its splashed across the log in screen.
Now to a casual player surely this would look legitimate? They haven't logged in so its not a game mechanic being used and they haven't visited a third party website.
Now of course you could say that you wouldn't be allowed to advertise a scam in EON and hence have it splashed across the log in screen, but this would imply CCP do look at the content of the ad and give it a yay or a nay.
If it was a yay then surely there's an argument for it being a CCP condoned scam and petitionable when i run off with everyones isk?

OK, without having any experience or knowledge of the business process, I imagine there's a responsibility on the head of E-ON, *not* CCP to vet content they choose to advertise. That said, they probably still check it out to ensure it meets content requirements. CCP allowing it to be advertised is merely a "yes, this is EVE related content and it's interesting", whereas E-ON are the ones taking a risk, and it's a RL risk in terms of their affiliation agreement. E-ON would probably stand to lose services and support paid for with RL cash if they did anything to detract from peoples experience in the game.
I don't think advertising E-Bank would hurt any more than CCP's other big advertising drawcards that E-ON would report on, namely BOB, Goons and all the other big alliances.
tl:dr; I think CCP aren't responsible, E-ON are. If E-ON take a chance and it falls in their face (i.e. EBank scams everyone) then E-ON suffers a massive RL hit, gets their plug pulled and end up with the spite of players who may know them in-game. |

My god. Smack about advertising in E-ON
E-ON is written by players for players. It's published by MMM publishing, an RL company which does have an NDA with CCP thus they're able to talk about upcoming features, but only in the same way that any CSM member would be able to. In the same way it was the same company that produced EVE-TV, yet all the presenters were players.
Thus it's quite simple to understand that E-ON pays its writers in ISK, since they are players in the game. Ads in E-ON are paid for by ISK, while the subscriptions pay for the mag itself. Equally I don't think there's any condoning of anything going on. I've seen ads from Veto and many pirate organisations in E-ON as well, who do a lot more shocking practices than EBANK's honourable intentions. Thus railing against EBANK's advertising in E-ON, an organisation that can easily afford to advertise in E-ON is quite hypocritical to say the least.
Then don't forget, E-ON also advertises on EBANK, while EBANK advertises in E-ON. It's a mutual agreement, and a good one. EBANK receives in excess of 50,000 views per month, so advertising on it generates a lot of exposure.
E-ON do reserve the right to choose who advertises in the magazine, but given that in the past 4 issues EBANK has been mentioned in the magazine several times, and this issue was about Industry, with articles by LaVista, Benilopax and an interview with Hexxx all in it and mentioning EBANK, it would've been kinda stupid not to have advertised.
And if you want to see the ad we placed in E-ON, have a deco here. |

No, there surely is not. ALL scams are CCP condoned, with the exception of those that break the rules. If you want to invest isk based solely on an ad without any further investigation, that's up to you. It is your own responsibility.

Not railing against any adverts in EON, I don't know enough about it to do that and as you mention it is a 'third party' venture.
My point for discussion was purely the splash ad at log-in.
I know EBank is player ran from the forums, but still knowing this, seeing the splash ad caused me to question if it was now being recommended/condoned by CCP.
The answer of course is no, but if a scam was advertised in this fashion it does lend a huge degree of credibility to it.
One wonders if a scam was successful due to the splash ad if CCP would bear a degree of responsibility, after all it is their client and they must program the ad to appear, should they not be responsible for the content?

The advert clearly stated it was published by EON, NOT CCP.

If you can muster the steep fee to advertise in E-ON, then part of the deal is each ad in E-ON gets an ad in the magazine and a one-time ad on the splash screen.

Sorry posted my previous reply before seeing your post, I agree all scams are CCP condoned within the mechanics of the game and I agree with you re investing purely on an ad - I only trust myself with my isk :)
Is a splash ad launched automatically by the client, programmed by CCP within the mechanics of the game however?
If the splash ad advised me to change my account password due to security issues I would do so assuming CCP were advising me, so am I so far off base suggesting CCP, to the average joe, are condoning EBank?
I'm not being argumentative or suggesting anything re EBank's legitimacy, just putting off running yet another mission while I've got a hangover |

There's no direct EBANK advertising, no website etc listed on that screen. It was simply a banner. The only way to find EBANK based on that splash would be to search for it.
In a game such as Eve I would like to think people are smart enough to realise it is a player run venture, just like when the KIA splash was up they knew that KIA wasn't an NPC corp, if not by the banner, by researching before they joined.
Either way EBANK aren't scamming anyone so it's a moot point |

That would be impersonation. That's illegal and would get you banned in game. |

The impersonating bit aside (far easier just to amend your ad than start from scratch), lets say the 'E' was dropped to just give a bank ad and some text to send isk to a character, legitimate scam within game mechanics?
250,000 subscribers would the ad pay for itself? I'm assuming so or else why would a legitimate venture such as EBank spend the isk to advertise

The advert didn't mention sending ISK. It simply stated it's name and it's motto. Using EBANK's name would be impersonating. Making some fake bank, paying billions for it to be listed in EON and then waiting anywhere between 1 month and 5 years for it to show up in an Eve Online splash screen is a bit ridiculous.
This conversation could go on forever. If you want to try and scam through the splash screen then by all means. Otherwise, the splash screen is no longer listed. There's now one for CSM elections. Is this CCP endorsing CSM as Eve staff members? What happens if a CSM scams?
Time to move on, theres nothing to see here. |

I don't know about that, Ricdic.
I'm half tempted to pay EON for a "Send me ISK, and I'll send back ten times as much!" banner now.
(But yeah, at the "controversy")

I didn't say that your advert mentioned sending isk, merely whether having an ad at the splash screen implies that it is condoned by CCP and the scam potential of this 'mechanic' and I would say the above, with 100% 'profit' on investments, is less ridiculous than an established bank with presumably tight margins paying billions for an ad and then waiting anywhere between 1 month and 5 years for it to show up in an Eve Online splash screen :P

Do EBank do loans??? Seriously tho, not something I would even contemplate actually doing, tiny wallet or not.
Anyway guys cheers for the discussion, kept me entertained - off for a long weekend away now, fly safe.

Let me lend a different perspective, if I may.
I are noob. I saw the splash add and thought E-ON was reporting on a new, upcomming feature in the game (I was thinking something like a game feature that worked like savings bonds, or a an intrest bearing wallet section) I wanted to find out more about this feature and my search lead me to this discussion where I learned E-Bank is a player corp. |

Well the advert has been in EON over a month now. However the splash screen was a first. It actually did pick up some interest from the public, about 3x more page views and deposits over the 24 hours it was up.
It also caused this thread to be spawned on General Discussions which whilst a bit of a battle is fine by me as it's an option for us to advertise in that section (the whole brand awareness thing I am always pushing to achieve).
Have a read and feel free to post your experiences there (either good or bad) |

Just before I left Eve Uni there was a hot debate about advertising in Eon and the log in banner, I think we can expect to see more and more corps and services making use of this "feature". I remember that it wasnt that expensive either.
I dont see a huge issue myself but I do agree that appearing at log-in does at least suggest CCP approval, which could be an issue in some circumstances I spose.
