No. It has oil in it. One cannot jeopardise the oil. |

Big place, lots of coast. Not so much convenient for nuking.
US Navy have said they have no plans to do anything about it. Royal Navy keeping quiet, but best bet they'll say the same. Looks like it's gonna be another few tens of millions of dollars for the pirates. |

It's a pity these shipping companies can't just put armed security (and I'm talking mercs, not some group of rent-a-cops) on these ships. |

IIRC, they used to do just that. A change in international shipping law saw to that. Now you can't carry firearms on merchant vessels.
That's just hearsay btw - I don't know what to feed Google to find the info that backs it up. ____________________

having spent several months in that ****hole, nuking is the only option i would advacate.
and with the surplus the USA and Russia has. I'm sure turning that place into a giant hole wouldn't to be hard.
and before the carebears want to save all the "good" people first. i suggest a trip there to see how many can be found.
btw take your college lvl **** and shove it. i lost a lot of friends their for ****ty reasons and carry scars still.
hell maybe we have a nuetron bomb and we can send all the bunny huggers there to show us how to make it a wonderful place.

I'm stuck in a chamber right now with a coworker who spent several years in the navy on a sub (so the cramped space isn't bothering him right now) He told me to the best of knowledge as it applies now in international waters you can do what you want but when you come to port you have to follow the rules of the nation. I also learned that in some cases it's really easy to capture these large ships because the crew will set a destination then everyone on board will go to sleep instead of taking shifts.
I found this link showing that some companies are in fact hiring groups to protect. |

you don't want armed guards on your merchant ship if you are a shipping company, as resistance and heroics just get people killed. I the pirates win but you have killed some of them, expect the crew to be lined up and shot. The pirates normally put the crew (such as it is) out in the escape boats, where they are quickly and safely picked up by patrols.
but yeah, its pretty bad out there, and the UK navy is being moronic. US navy is being too inactive. French navy are the ones making the biggest difference, against all stereotypes.

As a resident of Somalia, I have reported this thread and everyone who posted the blatent racist comments. It's dispicable that you would even consider nuking a third world country from "orbit" due to the actions of a few pirates.
You guys have really lowered my love of the eve community even further... . I hope you guys are ashamed of yourself and your words. |

True, but as a Somali myself, the one comment is pretty offensive. Although the OP post did make me laugh.
Edit: Just reilised, replied this post in a wrong thread, so let's make this one look meaningful. |

Thanks for the link, I'm currently writing a paper on Somalia, can use that info.
Speaking of which, from my research on the country, I've found that Somalia IS the worst failed state in the world, and is pretty much completely anarchic. I don't think it should come as a surprise to anyone that Somalia has so many pirates, since their coastline is right one the Gulf of Aden, which has billions of dollars worth of trade pass through it every year. |

Whats eventually going to happen is the nations these pirates run back too with their goods will end up in the cross hairs of nations who get fed up with the constant loss of equipment and merchandise.
Before you know it countrys like Somalia will become protectorites of the US, Russia, or whatever other nation decides to bend the nation to its will because it cant control the problem. |

Nuking Saudi Arabia may be the best idea I've heard here in a long time. Oh, you meant the saudi ship... Why stop there, nuke the mainland, nuke Somalia, pick your teeth with nukes, pick up your kids from school with nukes, nuke your mother on her birthday, it's the gift that never stops giving.

I think you missed the bit where I said I did laugh. There is a difference between laughing at a nation who can't even run its own military, and laughing at a cripple state caught in its own civil war and suggesting nuking it off the face of the Earth to solve the problem.
Hell, I laugh at Britain and Somalia, every day, why? because i'm a Somali living in Britian, Wales to be exact. (Half Welsh, Half Somali).
But, let's stick to the thread here so we don't go overboard. Why the hell aren't these freighters armed at all? bit of an idiotic reason to have any form of treaty to stop them from defending themselves. |

Mostly for humanitarian reasons, something certain groups dont care about as they fire RPG's at the hull of the ships.

It's a bit of a wierd mix I agree. Edit: Though, regardless of any sort of rules preventing these things from carrying weapons, it's a bit stupid, this sort of thing is to be expected, especially around Somalia. |

By and large the goods don't go anywhere. The pirates usually ransom the stuff (and crew) back to the company that owns it. Theres something like $11 billion worth of crude oil aboard that thing, not to mention 25 people. If the pirates say "Give us $20 million or we kill everyone and sink the ship", the company will almost certainly give them $20 million to end the calamity. The pirates make a cool clean profit, and the goods end up back with their original owners. Means the pirates don't have to worry about offloading 200 million barrels of oil and a large oil tanker without anyone noticing. |
