Sometimes other players show up in the "Threats" window. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that the player in question has targeted your ship? Or does it mean that the player in question has a negative security rating, and that I should stay clear of him?

Last I heard/read:
Yellow means a low security (pilot nearby) threat warning. I don't think this means they have targeted you. I see this a lot when leaving warp or a station. I even had a mining drone show up as a threat once. :P
Orange means that ship/pilot has targeted you.
Red means the ship/pilot has fired upon you. Q.E. New Dawn Corp.

Ah, that clears it up. Thanks. With that name, I should have known you're a great guy (since it's so similar to mine :-) )

In addition to low security pilots, you also get yellow threat messages from pilots for another reason.
If you have manually changed your standings bar for that particular pilot or his corp to a negative position, they will also show up as a yellow threat. I assume if your corp has a negative standing with their corp, this would also apply... _____________________

Its always worth a look in the SUPPORT section of this web site for these kind of questions ;-)
Quote from there: Question What does the color code in the "threats" window work? Answer Here is a breakdown of the color code:
Red - someone is shooting at you. Orange - someone has targeted you, but is not shooting. Bright yellow - someone has a bad personal standings towards you. Greenish yellow - someone¦s corporation has a bad standings towards yours. Green - Someone who has a bad security status.
Although I'm not sure that even this is 100% correct as I get yellow threats from ppl I've never seen b4 and seem to be completely neutral??? Any ideas devs?

What I have found is that players will hang around stations and gates and target you, as you enter, exit, etc. In hopes that a new player will target them back and/or fire upon them. Which inturn bring the cops. Who will then waste the new player, scatter his remains to the solar winds. To then be picked over by the perpetrator(s) like the vultures they are. The yellow targeting has nothing to do with social interaction. Some people (in another similar posts) have tried to explain the targeting as "just new players trying out thier new toys". This is wrong. I have been targeted numerous times (often by the same player(s), who are always in the same areas, night after night, week after week). And these players are in frigates and cruisers, which are definitely not "noobie toys". The targeting is purposeful and intentional. Actually I have the heart of an Exploiter and a PKer---I keep them on my desk in a jar. |
