I agree with Pottsey.
1st of all, it is not 5 years before payoff pure mathematically, it is 3 years, so if you think you wont be playing this game in 3 years, then fine, don't learn them.
Secondly it is the same with any learning skill, why train learning skills at all? They all only pay off after a certain amount of time, like training "Learning IV" to "Learning V", for me that will payoff pure mathematically in around 250 days, but it is no different then training basic learning skills to 4 or 3, they will only payoff after a certain amount of time. so would you advice people not to train to 3 because it takes X amount of time to get worth it?
Everyone will tell the newbies have to train their learning skills, but what kind of advice is that? A newbie training their basic learning skills to 4 right away? Thats totally boring, they wont even be able to afford to buy them, let alone the advanced learning skills. They wont be able to afford implants either ...
So the newbies have to find a balance between training usefull skills and learning skills, so they can play and enjoy the game. And it is no different from veterans, they too need to find this balance. Once I complete my training shedule with all the skills I need and want ( I should be ready in 3 months now :p ), THEN, I WILL start training my advanced learning skills to 5, meanwhile I can enjoy the game. And when I finally have all learning skills to 5 and have all +5 implants and my stats are 25-25-24-25-25 , then I will be ready for all the new and unplanned skills that I may want to train. On top of that, after 3 years, it will be pure profit.
Also, to the people saying it is better to buy implants then to train learning skills, DUH, ofc it is, it is not a question of IF, but AND, advanced training skills to 5 AND implants as high as you can afford ( which means training Cybernetics as well ).
So again Pottsey is correct, once you have all the skills you want right now, you should train advanced learning skills to 5, and profit in 3 years, or profit sooner if there are new skills released that you would like to learn right now. Or certain changes to the game are made and you want to suddenly change from 1 race to another race ships.
And EVE Online will still go strong in 3 years, I have no doubt about that, so it is only a question if YOU will be still here playing the game, but honestly looking at all the games from last few years and keeping in account that ambulation is comming and that in the future planetary interaction will come, maybe even RTS on planets, this game will keep me for years.
