Can someone explain the new reactions to me? Because I cannot find them or any information on them besides what is in the patch notes? How do they work?

On the market they are under Manufacture & Research \ Reactions \ Simple Reactions, they will all start with the word "Unrefined". They basically replace the high end moon mineral in the simple reactions giving you something else. That's why it's alchemy, you are using something cheap in place of something expensive giving you a more high end material. They are all for the simple reaction part.
An example is Unrefined Ferrofluid Reaction. It replaces Dysprosium with it's paired element Cadmium in the reaction. The unrefined reactions will return Unrefined Ferrofluid instead of the real thing. You have to take this unrefined material to a refinery and refine it and that turns it into real Ferrofluid at a rate of 5% along with 95% of the Dadium used.
This reaction would allow you to make Ferrofluid without using Dysprosium, but instead using 20x the amount of Cadmium and taking 10x as long to make the same amount.
There are 6 new reactions all working similar to this.

so it doesn't effect complex reactions, except in making the supplies of simple reaction products go wonky.

Yeah that's right and you'll have to do a refine in between to get the input material for the complex reaction if you use the alchemy method. |

I'll have to look into this as a potential cheaper resource. Do refining skills effect this?

Can't verify, though I would bet it is refined using scrapmetal processing skills. |
