it'll probably happen, the trend has been in that direction
it still makes me sad. i'm an intelligence junkie. i'm the one who runs 'curl > grep' on killboards for alliances living close to our space to look for new dread pilots and their fittings. i love having a fully organized buddy list for all active reds, sorted by FCs, CEOs, best pilots, etc.
it's utterly mete-gamy, but i find it fun as hell.
EDIT: page 2 stumbler --
i am a humble and inefficient ammo to dps converter |

The logical progression from here would be to make the buddylist consensual? I know that bigger alliance and corps keep a track of red Mom- and Titan-pilots through the buddylist, because once they're logged in it means their ship is in space.
How?

THis can only give you a vague idea of the number of active pilots in that corperation, and can never be an actual count unless someone leaked the info to you. The ammount and type of intel you get out of this feature is pretty low, and not practical if you say- wanted to track a whole alliance, or even an entire corp. That is, unless you want a bunch of crap lying around in your adress book (which I don't.)
lol i tracked a corp of 40 ppl this way and then searched them with locators and then we hunted them then i had to read 1000+ posts of 1 dude(yea he's a troll!!) on the forums to find out the name of his char ingame uʍop ǝpısdn ǝɹnʇɐuƃıs ʎɯ ƃuıpɐǝɹ ǝɹɐ noʎ

The only problem I see with this is bounty hunting, and without local aswell it would get kinda hard :P
