Ok, so now that local is getting removed as an intelligence tool and replaced with better scanner functionality.. The logical progression from here would be to make the buddylist consensual? I know that bigger alliance and corps keep a track of red Mom- and Titan-pilots through the buddylist, because once they're logged in it means their ship is in space.

COSMOS project? Is that like NGE of somthing?
lol@jumping to conclusions! Yes it's the EVE version of NGE, the sky is falling, EVE is dying etc..
For all you others, COSMOS is a community tool like facebook, but tied to your EVE character. It will allow alot of game features to be available out of game (market orders, checking skills, assets, etc.), aswell as blogs, corp/alliance calendar etc.

Not that much trouble. Consentual friends listing works well in Entropia Universe. But then that game is so unbelievably paranoid, it makes EVE look like a Roman orgy of social intimacy. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

And they also have been saying for years that they are going to move the roid belts so you have to scan for them. I would chalk removal of local as a wish list and nothing more until it is officially on a patch notes list. ------------------------------------

Welcome to the world of game development and promises. You obviously have not been here long enough to have your hopes crushed. Give it another expansion or two.

Please, for the love of God, tell me that you did NOT interprit that as a sort of 'promise' that it would happen 'ever'.....
If you were gullible enough to draw such a faulty conclusion, quit Eve now, as you'll whine on every upgrade when your favorite idea that has been mentioned by a developer does not make it in.
NEVER assume an idea talked about by developers is actually going to be in an upcoming patch. Maybe it will be, maybe it wont.

Bah, does it matter when, it will happen eventually, I'm sure of it.. I'm also not one to whine about expansions, I'm just glad to get new stuff whatever it is..
I just thought that nerfing buddylist would be a good idea, since it's not supposed to be an intelligence tool..

I have to agree with Neth'Rae on this one. Regardless of any other changes, if a person does not want to be your buddy, then you shouldn't be able to add them to your list. It is as simple as that. The feature is meant to be just what the name implies, buddy list, not an intelligence tool.
As a matter of fact, it infringes upon privacy. For whatever reason, the person may not want you to know when they are on the game and you should not be privy to that information just because you want to know.
Shame on you, no count non consensual voyeurs.

The only intelegence that this offers is knowing if a player is online or offline. THis can only give you a vague idea of the number of active pilots in that corperation, and can never be an actual count unless someone leaked the info to you. In which case, you don't need to put them in your adress book.
The ammount and type of intel you get out of this feature is pretty low, and not practical if you say- wanted to track a whole alliance, or even an entire corp. That is, unless you want a bunch of crap lying around in your adress book (which I don't.)

it'll probably happen, the trend has been in that direction
it still makes me sad. i'm an intelligence junkie. i'm the one who runs 'curl > grep' on killboards for alliances living close to our space to look for new dread pilots and their fittings. i love having a fully organized buddy list for all active reds, sorted by FCs, CEOs, best pilots, etc.
it's utterly mete-gamy, but i find it fun as hell.
