Having got bored of range kiting level 3 missions I decided to experiment with a close range Thorax set up using some components I had lying around. It seems to handle the few missions I have tried in it ok but I have been into hull a couple of times and I was wondering if anyone could throw me a few pointers. Hopefully not to buy lots of named/tech 2 loot
Hi 2xRegulated Neutron 1xModal Neutron 2xHeavy Ion
Med 10mn AB 2x Cap Recharger I
Lo 2xRCU 1 2xPDU 1 1x Med Armor Repairer
With Elec 5 and Eng 5 this set up has NO grid left.
All suggestions gratefully recevied as this is a helluva lot more fun than plinking away at 60km and then crawling in for 5 minutes to pick up the cans.

What you basically wanna be doing is getting rid of those RCUs and PDU, and getting some armour tanking going. Electrons are serious performers and with a nice damage mod in there outdamage neutrons easily, range differences aren't a big issue for cruisers so that's okay too.
A setup that works for me against NPCs is 5x electron 1x mwd, 2x for whatever you need to make everything else work, cap rechargers, tracking comp, webifier are serious options, I love webifier and tracking comp, but it takes some serious cap skills to make that possible. 2x hardners for the NPCs your fighting 1x medium repairer, 1x relay, 1x damage mod.
That can take a serious beating for a cruiser and dishes out the pain quite well still. Skills determine whether or not this works though, it's not the easiest thing to fly. Oh and don't forget those drones. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

This set up has worked wonders for me
High 5 - Modal light neutron blasters
Med 1 - 10mn mwd (or ab) 1 - named webby 1 - med cap battery (or whatever)
Low 1 - 1600mm plate 1 - named med armor rep 1 - damage mod 1 - tracking mod 1 - cap recharger
1 - Full bay of ogres (8)
Warp at 20k, lock them, orbit the biggest at about 2.5k, Launch Drones (send them after the frigs frist), webby biggest and begin to pummel. When you're drones are done witht the frigs, hit the rest. Never got below 75% armor with this set up, even on upto 85k rats. Takes a bit to get used to, practice on chumpy rats first, it's a rush.

I love your setup whohuhwhat... I tried a similar setup on an exequror for our corp's level1 cruiser tournament and it won the final, which was a 1v1 with another exeq (he had fitted 4 x med electron blasters and still wasn't able to get through my armour!). -- jamesw Rubra Libertas Militia

Edited by: Galen Brustar on 12/07/2004 18:55:33 My close range rax setup is something like this:
Highs: 3 Med nuetrons 2 150 rails
Meds: Tech2 medium shieldbooster shield hardener 10MN afterburner or webifier or Medium Shield extender or 2nd Hardener
Lows: tracking mod damage mod 3 PDU 1s
That third mid slot you can change depending on what groups you are fighting, vs frigs I usually find that the shield extender gives you enough time to kill all the bastards without totally draining your cap shieldboosting much. Against larger targets like the heavier NPC cruisers, I usually go with the 2nd hardener and just try to tank the damage while your guns and drones destroy the threat. The PDU's really help with fitting and give you a nice little boost to cap and shielding. Finally, I go with 150 rails instead of small blasters because with iridium s you can hit around 20km, which I find neccessary with fighting some NPC cruisers up close as they MWD to that range and hit you with rails. You can also swap anitmatter in for some good damage at 10km or so.

I use the following for L3 kill missions with no problems:
2x Dual 250mm Rails loaded with Tungsten 2x 350mm Rails loaded with Iridium 2x 425 Rails loaded with Antimatter 1x Cruise Missile Launcher 1x Siege Launcher loaded with Torps
1x 100mn MWD 1x Prototype Sensor Booster 1x Tracking Computer I (soon to be Tracking Comp II) 1x XLarge Shield Booster
2x Co-Processor II 2x Cap Power Relay I 1x Signal Amp II or Tracking Enhancer II 1x Tracking Enhancer II 1x Magnetic Field Stab II
Then I add 20% to my optimal and warp in from 60 km and kill all the L3 Agent Kill mission spawns with no problems. I don't even bother to fire missiles anymore however sometimes I do fly away from the NPC's at idle speeds just to keep my range where I want it. |

To Jacque Sparrow : Thanks, but I specifically asked for a balster set-up
Thanks for all the comments here. I modified the set-up as follows
Hi 5 Electrons with AM
Med 1xMWD 1xTracking Comp 1xCap Recharger
Lo 1xMed Armor Rep 1xDam Mod 3xCPR
And promptly got two Thorax's popped . Learning the skills for armor hardenders and fitting a webber should address these problems and I will be back to take out the mission rats with my kamikaze stylee Thorax once more.

Cruz,
Make sure you do some testing on normal npc frigs and crusiers before you try missions, i lost my first one that way.
That set up kills 6-7 serp rats in less than 1 minute. Just don't sweat the sheild loss, i paniced when i saw my shields crumbling and hesitated = 1 lost thorax.
Practice makes perfect whohuhwhat Director, WWJD
