Originally by: dalman transversal velocity / range gives the transversal speed in radians/second Ie, 100m/s at 5000m range -> 0.02 r/s.
But don't ask me how the tracking formula is affected by sig radius/gun size.
tracking of gun A against target B is sig radius of A/ sig radius of B * tracking of gun A. so hitting a 40 sig radius frigate with a 400 sig radius turret would mean your tracking would be 10% of normal. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

that is so messed up, kinda negates the point of having small frig orbiting someone doesnt it?
Nope, what it does mean is that going at high speed is most interesting for the one with the highest tracking. Since your own speed does indeed affect your own tracking.
Think of orbit as evasive maneuvring in a starship, not as driving around a stationary orbit in circles in a car. And it isn't all that strange for your own transversal velocity to affect your tracking. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

It is indeed strange in the case that your ship rotates during its orbit, so that it maintains the same orientation relative to the target's position.
In that case, the turrets would not need to change their angle at all, i.e., the enemy ship has no transversal velocity relative to your own frame of reference.

P.S.: The person who alluded to the Frames of Reference film may have misinterpreted the lessons contained therein.
Agreed, that's why I said that it isn't strange if that frame of reference moves more erratic then the thing your shooting at. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

It is wrong. See that thread for my clarification. Gonna try drawing it again. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

He didn't say it either, he said that it DID affect tracking and that he wasn't all to happy with it, but didn't see a easy way to change it. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Originally by: Admiral IceBlock my head hurts, its really stupid that we need to use all these formulas to understand how the turrets works, i dont find this any amusing at all...
eve is suppose to be a game, something fun to play, but this is not fun...
if i want math, i would sign up on the nearest math class...
Actually there isn't a lot of formulas to understand. (transversal velocity/range)*(turret sig radius/target sig radius)=tracking needed to hit. That's all that's to it.

Turret sig radius, is the preffered sig radius of the turret. 400 for large turrets, 125 for medium turrets, 40 for small turrets.
And yes sig radius is the effective size of the target, atleast when it comes to tracking and locking said target.
It's a good idea to show transversal velocities in your scanner, when that is high you won't hit, when it's low you will. And since yes transversal velocity is low on a straight aproach and high during a flyby, then low again when what your shooting at is moving away from you in a straight line again, you will go: hit hit, miss miss miss, hit hit hit. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
