I've been playing this game since June. While it is fun and all, I read these forums and feel like I am missing a vast majority of the game. My typical day involves logging in, messing around with finished production jobs and completed buy-orders for ore (I outproduce my mining), mine a little, and talk to anyone who happens to be online in my corp.
But there is so much more going on that I feel I am missing! How do I meet people willing to do things? I'll see 200 people in local and not one of them ever wants to chat it seems. How do I get in on the amazing politics that go on in 0.0 space? I'm afraid to even go to 0.4 space, since my skills are pretty much exclusively mining and production. I watch the alliance maps shift on a daily basis and think "wow, it must be neat to go on an offensive with/against Band Of Brothers", or "Hey, looks like such and such alliance finally took over another cluster into that other alliance's space!".
How the heck can I get in on all this excitement? I'm losing interest with this game because I feel like I am isolated from all the good stuff. I've had a lot of coffee and I'm rambling so I'll stop typing now.

Check which 0.0 alliances are recruiting. Don't expect to join a big one right away. Some may have a public channel you can hang out in to get to know the people. And ask yourself if production is what you want to continue doing in 0.0 or if you want to start training for pvp

As stated, look to joining some of the more opened 0.0 groups.
These groups are often called "pets", althought this is often not just. "Junior Military ally" would probably be a better term.
'Pet' alliances/corps sometimes grow to become big league, but often don't. But even when they die, their better members get scooped up by other alliances.
For the record, if you: --like to go on combat ops --are patient (GOTTA be patient in 0.0...) --Don't get Emo when you die because someone was stupid --Don't get Emo when you die repeatedly due to other people's stupidity --Can manage to fund your own ship supply --Can travel in 0.0 in a battleship WITHOUT needing another player help you (In other words, can you run two accounts at once, so one account can scout for the second account....)
then yes, you'll do fine in the 0.0 warring empires.

" I'm afraid to even go to 0.4 space" <-- this is the problem.
There's plenty of room for miners in 0.0 btw... and it doesn't take very long to skill up for covops ships so you can go exploring on your own.

Joining a corp is 100% sure to get you involved in some way.
All I would suggest myself, is that you join a reasonably small corp to begin with, maybe 30-50 people, where you can get on a "first name" basis with the people, and build up your contact net in EVE. There are plenty of smaller corps involved in war campaigns all over EVE, even in the GBC if that's what you're into.
Being an open and socially inclined individual will obviously help.

Ok a question then: So it is encessary to get an alt to join 0.0? [for a one time flight you can after all use a Trial account to get you there but thats not useful if you really need the second account to be worthwhile down there.]

If you have implants and don't want to lose them, use a disposable alt to go scouting in lowsec. You'll see that, with a bit of cunning and experience, you can survive.
Alternatively, get yourself a jump clone and go scouting with that so your implants are safe in the other clone, just make sure you replace your medical clone if you get podded or you'll lose skill points.
Find a station close to your lowsec entry point that has a medical facility. Set up your medical clone to respawn there so you don't respawn 10 or more jumps away. Buy a cheap, fast frigate and fit it with basic T1 stuff to keep it cheap. Just don't stay in one place too long in lowsec and you'll be fine. Just remember that if you see someone and they have a big, mean looking ship, it's best that you weren't there any more.

In other words, dont waste your time. It will end badly. Most of the 'other' alliances are alts of the main ones. Trust me I know.
Continue doing what you do, try checking out low sec a bit, maybe war dec a corp or two. That is EVE. Its just like RL.

It is usually not 'required', but it helps MASSIVELY.
It is a simple fact of 0.0 that jumping blind in Battleships (and a lot of other slower ships) is 'eventually' suicide. Worse, not only do you die, your death encourages more hostile raiders in your space (assuming your death took place there...), and you also have to post a lose mail, which gives your enemies bragging rights.
And you will find that your corp mates do NOT like having to scout for you every time you undock.
If you live in frigates and Vagabonds (and know how to use them), and never fly battleships in 0.0, this is not a problem.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Look in the forums for recruiting corps and talk to the guys there ,
You don't have to have a battleship to be useful, a scrambling frig is way useful ,
AND be sure that you will die horribly at least 20 or more times till you get your tactics figured out , that is one for sure when your fresh to zero space , and it's just like sex it you are only nervous till you've done it , after that it's easy

So wrong it is not even funny, at least about what you need to join the major 0.0 groups.
The major 0.0 groups want reliable, level headed combat pilots who are also immune to Emo everytime spmething goes badly. Especially important is the ability to NOT go Emo when you die (repeatedly) because something stupid was done on your own side.
The big league 0.0 folks want: --Reliable --Level Headed --mentally tough (able to take soul crushing defeats and keep going and LAUGH)
If the above describes you, if you are new to 0.0, you'll have to start in a 'pet' corp most likely. Over time, that pet corp will either become big league (unlikely), or die (probably), or linger on as a pet corp and you leave the corp for a more senior 0.0 corp (moderately common).
Play nice while you butcher each other.

You have to set your priorities first: do you want to PvP, do industry, whatnot. Then you have to get over your fears. It's not THAT scary out there. A little scary must be, it grows your excitement, nothing is interesting if you can go though it while half sleep. You have to experience the feeling when escaping with a few mates from a gang of 50 deep in their space. And then you get intel there's an even bigger hostile fleet in your destination area... *fades into memories* *ahem* Then go look into the recruitment section on this forum. If you know which part of space you want to go into, find out what alliances/corporations live there. Try to pick some that seem to have same interests as you do, also try to find out their timezone (pretty important if you want an active social life). Contact their diplomats (or other members) and ask about joining. Prepare for denials. If one doesn't want you, ask if they can suggest some alternatives. Try not to look desperate and try not to ramble :)
Might take a while until you find what you like but it's well worth waiting :)

Proberly the most accurate post here but don't get me wrong you may love it.
I hate politics and that 0.0 crap, i just like to pew pew haulers and mining bardges then ransom the pods.
Really you should follow the advice and try out 0.0 when you get bored then come to low sec where the fun really starts.

Try not to join a really wimpy outfit, if all they talk about is mining and how safe their space is stay away, you might be safe and sound for 2 years in their space but what story are you going to tell then?
And dont fly what you cant afford to lose, if you've got a bil or so i'd say stick to t1 battlecruisers and interceptors/assault frigs while you learn PVP (there is a lot less to learn nowdays... its just numbers)
Try to have money in the bank for 15x whatever you're flying into 0.0 while you're new, because you will die A LOT while you are learning, if you venture out on your own it will be a nice steep learning curve
(oh and learn to cloak, if you're not looking for a fight you should have a cloak on)

It was the politics which attracted me into 0.0. But you have to have a different mindset for it. When i started EVE i already ventured into low-sec in the first week. Offcourse i got popped mining Kernite in a trasher, but though it was quite the setback i also noticed the guy who shot me orbiting ar enormous speed. i convoed him, and asked him about his speed and learned about the MWD. He gave me 1 million ISK as well. Awfully nice.
After that i ventured into low sec more, and was offcourse very carefull. Fitting cloaks, making safespots and so on. But i am not really the pirate type, and if you are not that, low sec sucks. Too much risk for too little profit. I was in a little corp and that joined a little alliance who went on becoming a SMASH pet, and when that was arranged and SMASHKILL set us blue, i got into a ship, and flew through lowsec, and jumped the BWF gate in Oijanen, and saw the largest gatecamp ever. About 40 ships hanging on a bubbled gate, all blue to me. Then you realise that 0.0 is very different from the rest of EVE. The adventure was short there, because after a month we had to leave because alliance had it with SMASH demands, but i liked 0.0. And so the first opportunity to get into another 0.0 corp i grabbed.
But if you are part of a nice 0.0 alliance (be it pet or big boy) you are also part of something bigger. It really feels like you can contribute. The politics, the wars, the smacktalk, the roaming gangs, the gatecamps, and offcourse the rewards, because you can make big moniezz in 0.0. And lose them, And you have to get used to get ganked and lose ships on a regular basis.
But it is adventure as real as it can get in a MMO. If that is what you are looking for, by all means, sign up for a 0.0 corp. Though you might want to train up some fighting skills because every 0.0 alliance or corp expects their members to be able and willing to fight. Even at unfavorable odds. Just check out the recruitment forums, and go for the one you like best. ___________________________________

Train some combat skills and go get yourself blown up. Frigs are dirt cheap and don't forget its just pixels. If you want to get out to 0.0 you must understand there is no such thing as indy pilots, if the 0.0 alliance is going to be successful everyone must pitch in even if its just home defense. So a summery train some combat skills go into low sec and try to get yourself killed and get use to dying with some luck you will kill someone. DRINK RUM It fights scurvy & boosts morale!

Dude, I'm a small corp and I have a small POS up in 0.0, but I use it as a staging area for my capital then put it down and move on.
To the OP, you need to travel to 0.0 in a covert ops, see the place, watch the macro ratters work and then see if you want to join up.

TBH, 0.0 life is exactly what you are doing now, only instead of doing a spot of mining, you'd do a spot of ratting or a couple of hours of roaming gangs.
Once in a while you might go on an organised op as well, but much of the game is just moving ships into position, tending market/manu/research jobs, spinning ship in station and talking to buddies in game
_______ People like that don't have friends just temporary common interests.

Either you do the right things and wait till the opportunity arise, or you can take the fast path: train to do lvl4 missions, get a lot of money, buy a good PvP char, try to get to a decent corp.
Those "big players" are there because they've been playing for many years. They've formed this "clubs" and they don't want you there, or in their space.
There are a lot of interesting things you can do in Eve without being another Big Name Alliance monkey. But the most important part is having fun. Try to play with friends, or make some friends in the game. Have a good time. You won't miss not being part in a big alliance. ----

When I read these threads, it is really amusing as to how many of these ridiculous misconceptions people have.
They take some alliances that have died from a horrible failure and attach that to every alliance. Guess what people, not every alliance works like AZN.
Also, if you think mining and ratting are the only two ways to make money in 0.0, then you're doing it wrong.

Not much better can be said then this.
So I will compund it with a quick story. I joined one of these so called Pets alliances. My corp had some of the most active PvP pilots in the alliance. I learned from them and got shot down by non other then pilots from my current corp and alliance.
So if you want to start down this path then follow Sergeant Spots recommendations and also a few skills you want to start training are your prefered frigate skill to lvl 5 and propulsion jamming. This will allow you to be productive in a fleet and start to learn the ropes of tackling, which is one of the foundations of PvP in EVE.
