I was planning on getting 3x the rigs on my Cormorant.. but what DO they actually do? Do they increase the amount of materials gained per wreck.. or do they just increase the chance of not getting "Your salvage atempt failed this time"
Need some facts here before i spend 60 millions on nothing.
Btw.. i couldn't find ANY info about it via search so..

They don't increase the amount of salvage on the wreck, they just make each salvage cycle more likely to succeed.
Not worth it, IMO, unless you absolutely must have a pimp salvage ship. Even for hard-to-salvage T2 wrecks just training salvaging to 5 is plenty good enough.

Each tackle rig is worth 2 levels of the Salvaging skill.

Actually they're well worth it if you run with a Marauder (i.e. your salvage ships doesn't have to waste time tractoring), salvage most of your missions and are really interested in isk/hour. The time difference between salvaging a clump of 30ish wrecks with or without them is definitely noticeable. You really only wanna put them on a BC though, as that is your endgame salvager. I would not fit them on a destroyer, because you WILL end up replacing it with a BC once you got either enough skills, isk or clue to do so. And if you are reading this, you have arrived at the signature without noticing...

It's worth putting them on a Geddon IMO.
4 tractors, 4 salvagers
AB, MWD, Cap Charger
6 Expanded Cargo II's, 2 nano fibres
3 Salvage Tackles.
Short of fitting a Marauder for pure looting it's the best mission salvager/looter money can buy.

Definately worth it by far, to the point of even putting a pair on my mission Marauder.
With salvaging V you may spend 1-3 cycles or more on a single wreck. Adding just 2 tackles reduces that to rarely more than 1 cycle on anything except faction spawns or T2 wrecks.
As for the Destroyer Vs BC as a salvaging boat... I still prefer the dessy as a tagalong as it's far more nimble when the wrecks are spred far and wide. It's also cheap and the tackles are effectively free.
I just wish CCP would get off their collective butts and introduce a dedicated salvaging industrial (tier 1, 8 highs, no turret slots, bonus for tractor range).

Definitely worth it. I have 3 fitted on my Brutix, and with Salvage 5, I rarely have to wait more than one cycle for a single salvager to clear a wreck. It makes clearing those 50+ wreck missions a lot more palatable.
Plus, they aren't really THAT expensive, but of course I made my own with a well researched blueprint, so I gave myself a healthy discount off of retail price.

If you're serious about salvaging, then they're definitely worth it. I think a lot of people who buy them have a second ship (maybe on a second account) that's more or less dedicated to salvaging/mission support.

Just to chip in with everyone else, if you're going to do a dedicated salvage ship that is going to salvage everything in a mission then they are seriously worth it.
Nothing sucks worse than having to stop the loot/salvage process just because you've got a backlog of wrecks needing to be salvaged.
By the same token not having enough cargo room sucks bad as well so if you can spare the training and money for it you should consider a typhoon, or an armageddon. The typhoon is about the same in terms of raw salvage capacity but in terms of salving during a mission (with a partner actually doing the mission) it's far far superior.
Also, as another poster said earlier, the 10/15% (T1/T2) bonus is applied directly to the salvager at a flat rate and doesn't stack. IOW, instead of at Salvaging 5 1 rig adding 2.5% (10% of 25%) it adds 10% directly. 3 rigs and salvaging 4 is a 50% rate that, in all honesty, fails to salvage a lot less than half the time.
If it costs you 60m to buy 3 of them it'll take you probably 30 missions, tops, worth of salvage to pay them off. If they help you salvage twice as fast (admittedly a high estimate due to travel times and such) then it'll take a minimum of 60 missions for them to "pay for themselves."
If, however, you're looking to set the ship up as a ninja-salvager for low/no-sec work and/or harvesting in other folks' missions then it's a big risk/payout situation, especially in the low/no-sec areas where you could possibly warp in when the fighting is done, salvage what's left, and warp out before they say, "Hey, some punk's cleaning up our trash. Let's kill'im!" ____________________

Similar setup here, just with 2 tackles and a set of Auxiliary Thrusters to get a bit more speed out of the beast, aswell as 2 I-stabs rather than nanofibers.

Salvage Rigs rock the hard one, with Salvage IV and a trio of them suckers, your salvage chance is 50% - and if you're serious about Salvage, you shouldn't even have to buy the rigs, just save your salvage, get the BPO and make them, I've got a Cormie, Catalyst and Harb all 3 having 3 Salvage rigs, and I didn't pay a red ISK for any of 'em and you know what, for the love of god stop reading my sig \o/ |

You can ninja salvage without them, but they are one of those things you really need on your ceptor to really take it to the next level.
